Except power.
Many nations still relied greatly on coal- or oil-based power, a surprising revelation considering the advancements of the past. The coal and oil power plants have just gotten larger and more numerous. However, there is a solution...
In 2504, physicist, chemist, and inventor Martin McCracken designed a solar-replication power facility deep underground in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Project Nova was connected to every power grid in the world upon its completion in 2513 (the fact that the project was the source was kept secret by the US), but then was disconnected from the system in 2515 for unknown reasons. The project worked by creating a miniature star. It took an incredible amount of energy to create the star's extremely dense hydrogen field, but once fusion began, that energy input was repaid many millions of times over in an instant by the output from the star, christened Nova after the project. Nova's harmful effects were canceled out by means of extraordinary measures, such as anti-gravity plating and large force fields. The researchers themselves were kept from being blinded by a nearly opaque force field between them and Nova.
When the world's coal and oil mysteriously ran out on March 1, 2539, there was utter turmoil. It would be left to the citizenry to find the solution to the conundrum...
Four friends hiking in the mountains stumbled upon the Project Nova compound on March 22, 2539. Somehow managing to reignite Nova from nuclear batteries contained within the compound, the foursome were able to bring the United States back online, though the connections between the US and other grids had long since worn away. Now, the four must deal with the tasks of maintaining Nova and protecting its secrets from the world...
