JASA Spacelaunch Overview. Japanese Mars Science Laboratory (JMSL) is a robotic space probe mission to Mars, that has been in development for years.The overall objectives include investigating Mars' habitability, studying its climate and geology, and collecting data for a mannedion to Mars. The rover carries a variety of scientific instruments designed by Japanese scientists and engineers of JASA.The MSL mission has four scientific goals:
Determine the landing site's habitability including the role of water, the study of the climate and the geology of Mars.
It is also useful preparation for a future manned mission to Mars. To contribute to these goals, MSL has eight main scientific objectives:
Biological (1) Determine the nature and inventory of organic carbon compounds (2) Investigate the chemical building blocks of life (carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and sulfur) (3) Identify features that may represent the effects of biological processes (biosignatures)
Geological and geochemical (4) Investigate the chemical, isotopic, and mineralogical composition of the Martian surface and near-surface geological materials (5) Interpret the processes that have formed and modified rocks and soils Planetary process (6) Assess long-timescale (i.e., 4-billion-year) Martian atmospheric evolution processes (7) Determine present state, distribution, and cycling of waterSurface radiation (8) Characterize the broad spectrum of surface radiation, including galactic radiation, cosmic radiation, solar proton events and secondary neutrons As part of its exploration, it also measured the radiation exposure in the interior of the spacecraft as it traveled to Mars, and it is continuing radiation measurements as it explores the surface of Mars. Japan launches the Mars rover 0600hrs today.Launch is a success as reported by JASA, A little over a minutes after liftoff the 6 solid rocket "strap-ons" are discarded and fall into the ocean. Three of the six solid rocket strap-ons will be discarded first, and the other three strap-on boosters will be jettisoned one second later, while the first stage continues to burn. The final three rocket boosters are then ignited, and thenThe spinning third stage separates from the second stage, and the the third stage motor ignites, sending the vehicle out of earth orbit. The reason we want the vehicle to spin during this burn is so it stays pointed where we need it to go. Spinning stabilizes it, like a spinning bullet fired from a rifle. A nutation control system (a thruster on an arm mounted on the side of the third stage) will be used to maintain stability during this final burn.At the appropriate time, Mars Exploration Rover will separate from the Delta's third stage. Any remaining spin will be removed using the spacecraft's onboard thrusters. After entering obirt the thusters will stop and the spacecraft will cruise to Mars, it is expected to reach Martian Obirt in 8months where it will then revive full capabilities and prepare for entrace into Martian space
So far the mission is a success and in 8months we shall be on mars.
