The Spring of Nations: The New Era (IC)

Postby Ublia » Mon Sep 03, 2012 5:36 am

In 1848 the nations of Europe were shaken by revolution. Liberals, Nationalists and many others rose up determined to enforce their demands on the absolutist rulers at the time. Known as the Spring of Nations it shattered the old. Though it had failed it changed the world forever, much like the French revolution before it ushered in a new era. But what if the Spring of Nations had been successful? What if the revolutionaries had gotten their demands fulfilled? That is this scenario.

The revolutions themselves succeeded beyond imagining new states were created and old ones collapsed. Dynasties that had been at the height of their power to fell either ushering in new ones or bringing forward Republics. In Germany pan-nationalists forced their demands upon the conservative and reactionary rulers. Germany was founded the old kingdoms were swept away. The Habsburg Empire of Austria to collapse. The ethnic minorities rose up and hence sprung forth new nations or revived old ones. These would include the Hungarians, Transylvanians, Polish, Czechs, Croatians, Italians and many more. As well the French revolution of that year would bring forth shocking consequences as factions fought in the street and Paris became a sea of blood. The Swiss also suffered their Catholic and Protestant factions turned on each other creating a civil war that would haunt Swiss history. The Polish to rose up against their Russian and German overlords soon establishing a newborn Polish state against all odds. In Italy the liberals to rise up most notably in Sicily their demands were a constitutional monarchy which echoed across the peninsular. And also the cry for Italian nationalism surged. The Irish to have risen up demanding their independence. And finally the Romanians rose up proclaiming a united Romania. While other groups surged on English soil. Many other nations to would feel the revolutions. These would include Belgium, Denmark and some unexpected nations Brazil and Colombia amongst them.

Now you are one of many nations what has come is up to you but now Europe and more importantly the world has been forever changed. What will follow is up to you. The year is now 1849 and let the new era begin.

Frankfurt, Germany Jan.1st 1849

Hienrich von Gagern the newly elected President of the German nation stood before a bickering parliament. The conservatives under the Prussian Otto von Bismarck and Adolf Heinrich von Arnim-Boitzenburg had been trying to force the liberal dubbed "Monarchist bill" upon the Republic. Of course this was opposed by the newly formed Germanic League under Gustav Struve and Friedrich Hecker . Other leaders were also restless including the communists under that radical Marx. "We will have order! Order!" cried Speaker of the House Frederick Jahn BANG!BANG! his gabble hit the table. Soon silence filled the room. "Thank you Mr. Speaker." Gagern nodded. "Today we stand as the representatives of a German nation. The first fully united German nation. We cannot allow our ideologies cloud our judgement we stand for a united Germany now. Thus we must act united." Gagern then sat down. Bismarck soon stood up "Mr. Speaker I once more reiterate the bill I'm proposing. Germany needs a monarch! We need a firm hand! A leader we need a monarchy!" he was then interuppted "More like a puppet for you to cointrol!" Struve yelled "This interupption will end now! I'm declaring a recess of parliament. We will meet in four hours. perhaps then we will be more relaxed." Jahn ordered "Dismissed."

The delegates began pouring out of the crowded parliament room. Gagern and his party the German Republican Parties delegates soon travelled to a nearby cafe. As was customary. Every faction had their own. The Germanic League in particular thanks to their support by the Young Germany organization. Gagern soon took his seat at a small booth looking out the window he sighed. Germany was indeed in chaos to this day. The Republic however would rise he was certain of that. However with the radicals like Bismarck and Marx he knew it would be a long road Germany must travel before it could truely be united.

Venice, Northern Italy, January 1st, 1849

Francessco de Italia, first Doge of the United States of Northern Italy, sat in a brown leather saddle atop his horse, today he was wearing fine silk clothes as he was accompanied by his architect. Francessco had ordered the construction of a large military barracks and a large amount of cannons to strengthen the fortifications of Venice, he had to be ready for when the Southerners decided they had enough with the power struggle in Italy.

"And here, my Doge, is the current progress on the barracks." Said his architect, pointing at the nearly finished building.

"How does the shipment of cannons go?" Francessco asked

"We have received half of the cannons so far."

"Very good."

Madrid, Central Iberia, Jan 1st, 1849
King John looked around at his court of advisers as they talked loudly over each other in an attempt to push their own personal agendas. He shook his head in disgust at the pathetic gobbling of his nobles and stood up suddenly. He pounded his scepter on the stone floor and bellowed over the squabbling nobles. "Enough!"
The small crowd suddenly stopped and looked up at the king who was now towering over them. He motioned for his colony advisor to step forward.
"Ma'lord, I have grave news from the South American colonies"
The Kings face hardened as he sat back down.
"It seems that the rebels of Columbia have united into a solid nation and have pushed out what little troops remained"
The king stood up with a rage red face and bellowed with anger. He began to grind his teeth as he thought about what to do with the pesky upstarts in his western colonies. He still had his hands on Brazil, Chile, Peru and Argentina. The empire could use these territories as staging bases for a reclamation of the northern sections of the Americas that they had lost to Columbia and its allies. He stopped grinding his teeth and stood up with his mood calmed significantly.
"We shall retake what is ours, order the navy to began blockading the Columbian ports."

Athens, Southern Greece, January 1st, 1849

Demetrius Marinos, President of The Hellenistic Republics, stood tall behind a large podium overlooking his nations administrators. These were voted representatives of each republic sent to represent each regions interests. Among them stood members of his own presidential cabinet, so for intensive purposes, this room was now the most important in the entire nation, housing its most powerful and respected men. Of course right now they were more like the nations most irritating children. Still, reflected Demetrius, I suppose it is rather unrealistic of me to expect instantaneous peace, the republics are inhabited by many different peoples, arguments are going to happen. He then abruptly smashed his gavel down three times in quick succession. The sudden smashing sound blasted throughout the room silencing everyone. Doesn't mean I accept it though.

"My friends, be silent and listen." He paused momentarily to allow for total quiet. "We are critical juncture in our nations history. Only but a few months ago did these great republics rise from the fire and ashes of war, did they free themselves from the chains of Ottoman oppression. We came together seeking peace, greatness, prosperity, and so much more. Yet, when we meet to discuss such things all you can think about is screaming. Each of you here, you shout for your homes, for your lands and your regions within that home. In the old days, such a thing would be fine, indeed admirable, but those days are past."

He looked around, scanning the crowd, insuring they were paying attention. "You are no longer one land, no longer one province looking to for personal gain. No! You are all one, each a piece of a new and complex nation. The Hellenistic Republics are a phoenix, a majestic thing, ready to rise from the ashes of the past and take flight, spread its wings and soar! To take us to new heights, never before dreamed of. But, with every selfish act, every self satisfying goal, you not only chain this phoenix down, you drive a stake through it! Our people put you in power to see that their demands were met, they, isolated from the other parts of the Republic, care little for each other ultimately. You lot though, you can see the bigger picture. You can help them by helping each other. Is unity not better than isolation, are 10 men not stronger than 1 man?"

He then adopted a look he ha often used, one of humility, a pleading look. "Please my brothers, do not act for the self, act for us all. The affects may be lessened, they may take longer, but in return we are stronger as a whole. The people may complain for a time, but later, when they see the mighty sword that is our nation, not the sad shards of a blade it is now, they will look upon us and praise us! You will be heralded as heroes. My friends, I as your president and friend humbly ask for your help. Help me improve this nation, bring social justice to our lands, give all that we promised before to the people. Together, we can show the world who we are, show them just how great we are. Your choice is now, stand alone and fall, or stand together and rise to the heavens!" So the crowd cheered and applauded, shouting for unity as he knew they would. This of course would not fix the problem, the distrust of each other and the selfishness, but it was a start, and right now they could have a discussion. "So, onto business. Concerning the established policy with the vote..."

London
Greater London, England
The Commonwealth of Great Britain

1st January, 1849

London: the great capital of the Commonwealth. Home to politicians and thieves alike. There was nothing like London in winter, the snow covering the cobbled rooftops and streets as black plumes of smoke chug out of the thousands of chimneys scattered across the capital. The English people had returned to their usual post-Christmas depression, with the reality of endless work, little pay and deter the subversive elements of society. That was the official line, anyway. Britain under Hiram Burrows was similar to that of the former absolute monarchy, yet with a more totalitarian style. Burrows himself led Britain under many titles including Lord Regent of the Isles, Leader of the House of Commons, Commander-in-Chief and many more, titles which, by fact, allowed him complete and supreme control over the people and Parliament. Burrows had successfully retained many British colonies in Africa and parts of India, as well as Australia, whom remained loyal throughout. Though across the seas trouble had brewed in Canada.

Burrows sat in front of a large mahogany desk, his office a high, spacious room with the generic lavish decor which was expected in Buckingham Palace. The fireplace roared viciously, fiery embers being spat out onto the tiled floor, missing the room-length carpet by mere centimetres. Several men - Members of Parliament - were gathered around Burrows' desk, the bald, ageing man himself writing on a piece of paper, the men silent as they awaited his attention.

Burrows added the final touches to the letter, looking up at the men. "Gentlemen, I hope I wasn't keeping you long." He said slyly, a smirk on his face. "Not at all, Your Honour, we advise you at our pleasure." One of the MPs replied; the man was short and stout, with a round belly and grey thin hair and mustache.

"Good..." Burrows replied, his voice as villainous as ever; there was something distinctive about his tone which made many people's skin crawl. His spiny and scrawny frame lifted itself from his chair, the medal-like medallion around his neck moving slightly with every body movement. "It is time to expand, gentlemen. For too long have we put up with the insolence of the Irish, even the Canadians have risen against our rule of late." He side-stepped his desk, wondering over to the fireplace and staring into its lively fires. "It is with...regret, that the Canadians have done so, though they shall fail."

President Jose Hernandez was skimming over his reports of the post-war situation. Peru was defeated, but its population still held great hatred for the Colombians. He beckoned his secretary and told her to send a letter to his cabinet about a meeting in as little as one week. As she hastened out the door, he reexamined the reports, this time caught by one little scenario. "Peru may be ours, but Espana still has its strength all around South America," read the line. He knew he would have to wait until the Cabinet Meeting to address the issue and come up with a solution, but it seemed like he would have to wait while Spanish troops surround and demolish the new, independent Colombian federation. So, without the approval of Congress, he sent a letter to the Head of the Spanish Gov't, hoping it would be able to allow his country to circumvent problems with the Spanish Empire.

From: Presidente José Hernández de la República de Colombia
To: King John de la Unión Ibérica de la España imperial
Subject: Peace Treaty

Message: Dear King John, I will be sending my Spanish ambassador and two consulates in hope that we may agree to peace between our great nations.

Jose Hernandez, President of the Republic of Colombia

John Portador the king of Iberia and much of the new world sat happily at the end of the great hall. He was waiting for his dinner which would be a moment to relax from the stresses of leadership. Next to him sat his queen Joya, a beautiful and compassionate women who was often the calming factor in his leadership. She majorly influenced the decisions he made and had proved to be a wise adviser to him. Thus he was around his two favorite things, a good meal and his wife.

As he took his fourth bite from the meal a young looking and slightly winded messenger entered the room. Without a word he crossed the chamber and handed a message to the King. John unraveled the paper and nodded his head in approval at the news. He motioned a servant over and asked him to retrieve a piece of paper and a ink and quill. When the man returned the king dipped the quill into the ink and began to write.

To:Jose Hernandez, President of the Republic of Colombia
Subject: Our dispute
We will gladly accept your diplomats and are open to negotiation. We will receive the diplomats in the settlement of Boa Vista.

The reassembled German parliament looked little refreshed. In Gagerns opinion they looked only further enraged. Bismarck currently had the floor. "It is for the better of a united Germany to have an iron hand to guide her through this darkness! The German people have been united in a sea of blood only through a monarchy can we we all be reunited and mould Germany into a proper European and modern state!" he cried the applause of the conservatives and reactionaires now rang out. Jahn whom was presiding over the meeting looked uneasy as the communistst and liberals merely sneered and some muffled slurs via the applause. Jahn then stood up "Will there be any further closing arguments?" he asked surveying the room. Suddenly from the communist wing a single loan figure rose. Karl Schapper, was a longtime German nationalist, socialist and Republican few had heard him speak Gagern himself was all to intrested,

"It is the opinion of my friend here that a monarchy will strengthen our nation. He feels that we need the iron hand of a single leader to control the German nation. As you all know I'm a Republican, a German nationalist and proud socialist. Bismarck here is a conservative, a royalist but also has visions for a united Germany. I share his dream of a united German nation. I however do not condone a monarchy!" he then shook his hands in the air his tone rising "We have sacrificed to much blood, to many sons and to many German lives to once more be put under the thumb of a monarch. A monarch whom undoubtly will revoke our freedoms and our Republic! This cannot be allowed Germania must stand as an example of liberty and justice for the new europe and world! In 1848 we did not only unite we did not only change the maps we changed history! We have invoked a new era for the human race! We have shown that one family that only a few individuals can no longer rule absolute! What began with the fall of the Borbons in 1789 has continued! We have forever shown man they are masters of their own destiny! Now we must stand strong, we cannot surrender this independance we have gained! We cannot surrender the dream of a united German nation! And we will not surrender our Republic!"

The room soon burst into applause "Hail Schapper!Hail Schapper!" "Down with the old!" "Long live the Republic!" "Vive La Revolution!" these were the cheers of the liberals and Socialists whom drowned out their conservative opponents. Schapper meanwhile returned to his seat as he was patted on the bck by his fellow anti-Monarchists. Marx meanwhile was beaming and heaping praise on his fellow socialist. "Now we shall begin the vote." Jahn then pounded his gabble. Gagern meanwhile looked over at Schapper whom merely leaned back his face covered with pride.

"The vote is now complete. Those in favour seventy six,. Those whom have abstained twenty three. And those in favour one hundred and twelve. The bill is defeated and hence we remain a republic. Parliament is now ajourned." Jahn then once more pounded his gabble and the delegates soon streamed out. The conservatives had been utterly crushed even several of their own had defected to the anti-Monarchist camp. Gagern was pleased he and his fellow liberals had to thank Schapper in many ways. But he was being whisked off by Marx and Engels to the Communist camp. Or more likely the bar. He however noted Bismarck was in a somber move he had been crushed however he would soon recover and more then likely release a fury befitting of only him.

Gagern stood before the representatives yet again they were all eager to discuss his latest bill. "My friends I know recent critisism has occured over the so called Iron Brothers cabinet. Hence I propose Bill 0039 or the Unity Bill. The bill will have an election of cabinet from members of various political parties by the parliament. I ask you all please at least consider this idea as it will end hostility it will end rivalry it will unite the German government once and for all!" the room however was quiet then Marx stood up "You Gagern are a weasel and a cheat! This is not democratic and will not unify us! The assembly is filled with your crownies hence I formaly demand a national referendum regarding your presidency!" the words were soon greeeted by the sound of cheers from the other parties. Looking over Ggaern and his supporters were soon in a sea of outcries. Soon a chant began "LIBERTY!LIBERTY! LIBERTY!!" it only grew louder. The reporters had already known of gagerns proposal as he'd made it public to them before hand. his triumphant gesture of unity was trampled. Soon Jahn attempted to calm the crowds but they kept shouting. Soon he beconed the guards whom forced the delegates out of the building then a shoe was thrown from the crowd shitting a guard. Soon the clubs came out and the room fell into anarchy.

The room was now deserted however it was stained with blood the conflict had severly injured several delegates of various factions. And one guard had been wounded. Outside gagern could see from a window a mob gathering led by the beaten though determined Engels. Marx had broken his arm and was now in a hospital. the crowd were workers and all bore red armbands of the communist faction. Next to him Schapper stood. Then someone saw him in the wiondow "TYRANT!" then a brick was flung Gagern ducked. CCCRRRAAASSSHHH!!!The window was soon broken. The guards soon gathered slowly pushed forward as they fired warning shots in the protesters direction. "NO!!!" Gagern cried rising upon hearing first the guns then th scream of a statrtled crowd scurry off. Looking down once more he stepped over to the desk and formaly signed a long prepared resignation notice. His brothers had already done so Max was off to Vienna and frederich was with the Honour Guards. Germany would not turn to bloodshed and Gagern wouldn't cause it today the papers had read of his unity bill. Tommorow they would read his resignation and a Presidential election.

York, Canada

Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine was now Intern Prime Minister of Canada. The young nation was released form England and the 5 separate provinces had united to form a nation of only a few million. The provinces of what was part of the BNA (British North America) consisted of Upper and Lower Canada, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Nova Scotia.

Although young and with great potential the nation had many challenges ahead of it. The UK undergoing what many (Almost the whole population) Pro-Democracy called a dictatorship crack down had called for their own independence after the assassination of Queen Victoria. They had eventually gained independence thought the possibly of Britain wanting to regain their old colony was very real.

The other threat was the ongoing tensions and differences between the French and English population. Both groups agreed on separation from Britain though the English wanted to keep ties to the monarch. The French one the other hand wanted all ties severed, and in addition also wanted their culture protected and equal representation the House of Commons which will be formed as the acting government body. The Chambers was being built in York now and close to finish.

The third issue was the threat form there southern neighbor. All though not as immediate because they were handling difficulties of their own down south.

Precautions were being taken though. Since the Capital would be in English area the current Intern Prime Minister would be French. To deal with boarder threats a militia force of 20,000 was being raised and armed with older British equipment. They would then Man the Forts that were now empty after the British pull out.

Louis-Hippolyte Lafontaine now sat in a law office that had been rented out for a few weeks while the House of Commons would be finished built.
He was the intern leader and would be while an election would be held in the near future

Frankfurt Germany, Jan. 2nd 1849

The streets of Frankfurt were crowded with thousands of angry demonstraors at the attack in parliament over the Unity Bill and now gagerns resignation. The communistst especialy had turned up in full force however Bismarck was also making his case. He and his Prussian flag waving toadies had surrounded the south side of the Nationalversammlung. The liberals were in complete disorganization as one of the non-Gagern family ministers, Eduard von Simson had been attempting to gather support for his interm Prewsidency however it appeared that the more radical Gustav Struve however was rallying what the papers called the Blum faction, after the radical liberal Robert Blum whom had been murdered in 1848 by government troops. He was also supported by Lorenzo Brentano and other Badenisch politicans. Gagern sighed with hyeavy sadness as he entered the carriage. Carbineers guarded his sides as the carriage and guards left the stable house Gagern found himself in a sea of anger as everything from eggs to bricks were hurled towards him.

As the carriage turned down a narrow street the Carbineers found they would have to ride behind the former President Gagern nodded. The road itself was more of an ally it was dark and secluded "Driver why are we going down this road?" gagern demanded the man then responded "No protesters sir." Gagern then nodded "Carry on." however the road wasn't deserted. BANG!! The sopund of a shotgun ripped though the alley as the shot smacked the driver ddead in the chest. "What in gods name!?" Gagern yelled out his aide now jumping oyut in a bid to save himself. Then a figure climbed into the carriage "For the Republic." he smiled stabbing a stunned Gagern in the chest. He didn't scream Gagern merely slumped back "W..h...y? he asked the man didn't answer only pulling out a gun he then finished the job. BANG!BANG! Gagerns dead and bloody body then slumped out of the carriage falling into the street the guards soon rushed up but the man merely smiled "I surrender." his job was done.

Hiedelberg University, Germany Jan. 3rd 1848
News of the Presidents death had spread fast Conrad Ulrich Johannes Uble a young but ever determined Socialist and Young Germany member looked around the room. Unlike the other students around him he didn't come from the upper class. No his family was from the lower class or the proletariat. His family came from a small town in Baden called Eppingen. Many of his family members had immigrated with grand uncle Ulrich to Canada. Conrad looked over at the other students all were lazy and rich, now he was studying philosophy and history. His friends and him meanwhile weren't they were poor and had worked to get were they now stood. Conrad himself had participated in the Baden revolution of 1848 he had fought for the Republic. Now though if men like Bismarck would succeed then all was lost. Hans then walked over "Conrad did you here?" "Indeed I did the Presidents dead. And Bismarcks blaming us." he looked down at his red armband showing to all his lotyalty. "That fat conservative cat will do anything to boost his numbers in the polls." Hans growled. Conrad then motioned to him to come closer "Get the others tell them we meet at the bar at 10:00PM sharp the password will be Athens." he whispered to Hans whom smiled then walked off with a wave.

"Whats this about Conrad?" Ferdinand asked as the sound of music flowed from the bar/foyer of the hotel. "Simple I asked you all here for one reason and you all know it." he then folded his arms before taking a seat. "Ferdinand then raised his eyebrow leaving a short pause before August spoke up "You mean the Presidents murder?" he responded. Unlike the rest of them August von Zeit wasn't a poor farm boy but from the upper class. Sufficed to say he left that life to the dismay of his family when he helped in the revolution. now he was an outcast and despitte his origins he was more then welcome at the table. "Very good August, We've all got holiday soon so I suggest we head up to Frankfurt." Hans then spoke "Why so soon?" Ferdinand then cut in "Simple everyone knows that Prussian Bismarcks got the army or rather the Prussian army at his beckoning. And the good King despises us. Plus with all this turmoil he can easily take over." "So what are we supposed to do?" Hans questioned once more. "We can go up to hlp our fellow Socialists he then pulled out an article from the local communist newspaper Der Arbeiter.

It read: " Comrades now is the time to stand strong! Not just for Socialism but for the German nation. With the ravening Prussian menace (ie Bismarck) demanding action against the Socialist community we must act. Those whom believe in cause come to Frankfurt defend the cause. Or soon the Prussians will be upon us with their iron hordes determined to purge us like animals. We must stand together wer must defend the peoples cause!"

They all looked up "Very well let's all go to Frankfurt." ferdinand replied with a smile the others in the room nodded. Conrad then spoke "Very good we leave in six days. For Germany." he rose a glass of beer in the air. "For Germany!" the cry was chanted as they all rose their glasses. CLINK!

King Tasos sat in his new throne room. It wasn't the most elaborate room, nor was it the most spacious, but it worked. He sat on his recently carved Golden Oak chair, which everyone called a throne, and listened, with a clear boredom showing on his face. However, being the king of the Crypro-Israel nation has it's duties, and he had to do them.
"So far, we've only relied on ourselves for materials, food, and resources. However, if we allow this to continue, our economy will surely shrink! We must start trading with the international community! Perhaps even trading with the Ottomans will increase our relations!" One adviser warned.
"Yes yes, begin trade with... The Hellenistic Republic! Yes, The Hellenistic Republic. No. Wait. Actually... Yes, contact them, and ask to begin trading." King Tasos paused. Continuing, "Yes! Translator! Come over here! Write in English what I say. To... The Esteemed Rulers of The Greater United Hellenistic Republics. Both of our nations were forged on rebellion against our Ottoman oppressors... And so, we wish to strengthen our relations with you. We present you an offer of trade. This shall improve the economies of both our nations. We shall provide you..." He paused, "with some of the finest cheese in the world, Halloumi, as well, we would be pleased to provide you with Courgettes (Zucchinis), Taros, Mespilus and Golden Oak wood. In return, we wish to be provided with lignite coal. I'm sure that if this deal is not satisfactory, it.... can? No. Will be modified.''

The message was quickly sealed with the official crest of the Grand Cypro-Isreal Nation, and sent off with the quickest leaving boat to Greece.
