Sometimes teachers don't actually explain this simple fact: Doing homework=better test grades. The fact that we need that explanation is sad, yes, but that's another discussion.

Precisely.
Back in India, we would have classes which you could show up to or not, fuck if anyone cared. Then you would study, they'd give homework. The homework was worth nothing. But you'd take it home and study it and do it, because this would show up on the exams. Often they'd make you learn the concept entirely by yourself because the teacher wasn't able to fit it in the class time. You'd go over the work in class or read a book or sleep in if you'd like. You had to go exam days or it was a 0 on the exam. The exams then made up your whole grade for the class. And mind you, these exams were cumulative so that we didn't forgot stuff from the beginning of the year at the time of the end of the year.
Much better system than what you lot have.

You know what's also one of our biggest problems?
Multiple Choice.

The only time I ever had short answer questions were in AP classes, because it would prepare us for AP Exams. Otherwise I'd say over 80% of the time there were no short answer questions.

You know, I really hate when people refer to Americans as "you lot", like we all support our bullshit. What the hell can I do about that?

Almost all the tests I have generally come with essays/short answers. Not a whole lot of multiple choice.
Then again, one of the best school districts in the state, so that probably isn't indicative of the American school system at large.
