The Spring of Nations: The New Era (OOC)

In 1848 the nations of Europe were shaken by revolution. Liberals, Nationalists and many others rose up determined to enforce their demands on the absolutist rulers at the time. Known as the Spring of Nations it shattered the old. Though it had failed it changed the world forever, much like the French revolution before it ushered in a new era. But what if the Spring of Nations had been successful? What if the revolutionaries had gotten their demands fulfilled? That is this scenario.

The revolutions themselves succeeded beyond imagining new states were created and old ones collapsed. Dynasties that had been at the height of their power to fell either ushering in new ones or bringing forward Republics. In Germany pan-nationalists forced their demands upon the conservative and reactionary rulers. Germany was founded the old kingdoms were swept away. The Habsburg Empire of Austria to collapse. The ethnic minorities rose up and hence sprung forth new nations or revived old ones. These would include the Hungarians, Transylvanians, Polish, Czechs, Croatians, Italians and many more. As well the French revolution of that year would bring forth shocking consequences as factions fought in the street and Paris became a sea of blood. The Swiss also suffered their Catholic and Protestant factions turned on each other creating a civil war that would haunt Swiss history. The Polish to rose up against their Russian and German overlords soon establishing a newborn Polish state against all odds. In Italy the liberals to rise up most notably in Sicily their demands were a constitutional monarchy which echoed across the peninsular. And also the cry for Italian nationalism surged. The Irish to have risen up demanding their independence. And finally the Romanians rose up proclaiming a united Romania. While other groups surged on English soil. Many other nations to would feel the revolutions. These would include Belgium, Denmark and some unexpected nations Brazil and Colombia amongst them.

Now you are one of many nations what has come is up to you but now Europe and more importantly the world has been forever changed. What will follow is up to you. The year is now 1849 and let the new era begin.

Quick (alt.) history of your nation: The Revolutions of 1848 led to German unification after the defection of many army units with the large massacres in Berlin and other German cities. These units quickly armed the revolutionaires and soon assisted them in the large street battles to follow. Due to the defection of the units as well the monarchs of the various German states found themselves outgunned. As well with Polish revolutionaires also running rabid to the East the Prussians (whom were the main force to deal with the revolters) was quickly outnumbered in it's German territories. Finally as the other European powers were far to distracted by their own revolts no aid would arrive. Thuroughly outgunned and as more defections continued the German rulers met with the revolutionaires at Frankfurt. There with the motion of a pen the German states were forcefully united. Their ruling families would remain but have no control over the new government at Frankfurt under Hienrich von Gagern. Now the new born German nation must remain ever vigilant and rebuild from the chaos of 1848.

Quick (alt.) history of your nation: The Spring of nations was an inspiration for the conquered peoples of the Ottoman Empire, a chance for freedom. Throughout the Balkans people rose up against their Eastern masters and many a bloody revolution ensued. The Greek peoples, who wished to see a return of their old home of Greece to its former glory, fought tooth and nail. The small nation of Greece south pledged their support to the rebels who sought to reunite Greece. Demetrius Marinos, a silver tongued and charming politician, brought a surge of nationalism. He urged the Greek peoples to rise up, band together, and forge a new home for themselves. He promised freedom from the Ottomans, social reform and freedom for all.

When he had the population sufficiently rallied and ready to fight he gave them over to General Kempos Polopolous. A friend a supporter of Marinos, he lead the Greek army and the revolutionaries to beat back the Ottomans. After many months of violence and death, he shattered their hold over them and pushing them back across to Anatolia. With the original Greek homeland returned to its people and a energized army, Marinos and his soon to be administration, saw an opportunity to expand their new nation. As such they sent the Greek armies forward, battering the Ottomans, who, without their supply lines and reinforcements from home, fell much easier. However, the battles were hard fought and bloody, with many Greeks being killed in the process. As such the people of these conquered lands could not be subdued, they had to be convinced to stay with them.

They told these peoples of the days of Hellenistic Greece, of its majesty and wonder and how they sought to return to those days. They said they could be a part of it, they could also be great. Then of course sang they same song that had won them support back home. "Social reform, class equality, freedom, and joy!" It took a lot of convincing, but for many, it was easier to join a nation who already had a government than start their own. Well that and the Greek armies were still in their lands.

So is the story of the Hellenistic Republics, named so for the governments constant promising of a new Hellenistic age. The army is small these days, partly due to the casualties of the revolution and partly from the peoples weariness with war. The government has kept true to its word and is ushering in reform, though not as much as they had promised, though with the nationalist fervor it has been in large forgiven, as have the many taxes put in place to pay for it all. The conquered peoples of Albania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, and the Turkish regions and have been made honorary Greeks, so as to bring everyone closer together. There are still tensions between people, but the government does its best to stop it. All in all the nation is held together primarily by the government and not any sense of loyalty, at least outside of Greece proper, and it is only so long as the government remains about the people that the nation will hold.

Side notes: Crete had a revolution of its own and joined Greece willingly in exchange for its own government. Think of say Scotland in Great Britain. As the government has to remain true to its word for the time being and wishes to bring about a new Hellenistic Greece the arts are becoming big in Greece. With nationalism, general happiness, and the promotion of education, a cultural boom is happening and a mini renaissance is happening. However, this has come at the cost of the military, who is viewed as a hero for its work in the revolution, but has to be kept small to appease people. Still the government hope to make up for this with quality training and technology.

After watching neighboring Sweden deteriorate into a revolution, Norway broke away from it's ruling state. However, the new King of Norway was weak and corrupt, preferring the company of beautiful women and sweets to ruling a growing and powerful nation. So, a small group of commoners in Trondheim rose against their king, inciting the rest of Norway into a rebellion against there weak King. After turning most of the countryside against their King, Oslo itself came under siege.

The King of Norway Erik Valis finally surrendered, and was later shipped off to the far away islands of Svalbard. A parliament was established, with the leader of the rebellion Byurd Weisky installed into the head of state. After that, it was a small matter to reinstate control in Iceland for Norway. However, Swedish raids on northern Norwegian towns was a problem, so a group of armed men were sent into northern Sweden to get rid of the pesky raiders.

Finland, also in turmoil, was annexed into Norway in exchange for protection from Russia. Thus far, the Kingdom of United Norway and Finland was created.
