After-World: A Post-Nuclear Nation Simulator (OOC, Open)

In short, this thread will be a post-nuclear role play centred around the varied and unique governments that would arise after a global nuclear apocalypse.

Introduction

The year is 2428. For the last 300 years, humanity has crawled from its bunkers and began to rebuild itself after a global nuclear apocalypse. After the initial century in hiding and the long struggle to re-conquer the surface in the face of radiation, mutants and tribals, has ended, and in parts of the world were man still lives, and the land is still liveable, governing bodies have grown from smaller organisations into true rulers of their domains. Now, the governments of this new world will explore, expand and conquer the lands around them, to expand resources and power.

So essentially, you will have to form a post-nuclear government of your own design. The world is filled with advanced, retro-futuristic technology and mutated men and creatures. Whilst your government can be a continuation of a pre-war organisation, you will not be allowed to play as a surviving pre-war government. The geographical setting will be in the continental United States, Canada, Alaska and Mexico. Each government should only have an area equivalent to 1-3 states. Bigger governments will generally be harder to run as the government will be more stretched in its operations against internal threats.

The total population of the map is 2.5 million, considering the pre-war population would be ~500 million. Only at most 15% would be eligible for military service unless under special circumstances. Populations will be fairly level geographically, considering cities would be hit hardest by the bombs.

I like these kind of games, hopefully this one takes off! I like that its a setting- neutral game, taking pieces from other existing storylines rather than just being another fallout forum game.

Name of Government: Oklahoma Expedition
Territory: Ruins of Oklahoma City, around a dozen small outposts (10 or less people) along US35 interstate
Government History (origins, rise to power etc.): The Horizon walkers were born out of a slowly growing confederation of tribes in the north texas/south oklahoma area. Due to their convenient location on highway US35, travels north and south brought these people into contact with more and more tribes. With no truly unified leadership or desire to conquer, the people began simply to trade. Using old Oklahoma City as a headquarters, the Oklahoma Expedition was born.
Description: The Oklahoma Expedition is a unified group of traders, mercenaries, and explorers. They view travel, communication, and trade as the central tenants to reclaiming civilization. The Expedition travels along the old US highways trading and delivering mail to any tribe, group, or nation that will receive them. Fanatically neutral, the Expedition will do business with all people- towns, vaults, raiders, slavers, wanderers, so long as the trade is fair and peace is maintained in their presence.

Name of Government: Iron Fist Society

Government History: The Iron Fist began as a small tribe operating from the ruins of New York, slowly expanding their power along the coastline. Their power was displayed in the titanic Battle for New York, in which they emerged victorious over all of the other Yorkian tribe competitors and established themselves as a centralized, strong tribe on the Mid-Atlantic. They soon began to expand their power, expanding their frontier down south along the coast through careful annexation and small-scale conflicts among local populations to bring them under the Iron Fist lifestyle.

Recently, the Iron Fist has sent expeditions against New England (centered against Boston) and into the Appalachian Mountains (centered against Pittsburgh) to secure more trade routes and establish a larger region-wide influence, but both have been failures. They are beginning to renew an offensive on Pittsburgh, citing the need to control the city to control areas of the Ohio River Valley for agricultural needs.

Description: The Iron Fist Society is authoritarian and has a very bleak outlook on life, seeking to 'fix' the problems that the past civilization incurred through their own twisted world-view. They are self-centered and seek to get the best out of a situation for themselves rather than others.
Population Levels: 500,000+ (It was one of the most populated regions pre-nuclear holocaust), changes due to Expeditions, Re-settlements, etc.
Technological Levels/Advancments: Architectural knowledge, Weapons' production, theorized nuclear capability
Notable Traits: Economic powerhouse, technological powerhouse, militarized society, aggressive
Leader of Country: Maestro Jove Mercury

Territory: Island of Newfoundland
Government History (origins, rise to power etc.): The Government of Newfoundland was formed by Canadian politicians and loyalists who had left the bunkers still considering themselves loyal to the House of Windsor. They emerged from their bunkers and made contact, soon afterwards, they formed a government.
Description: The Kingdom of Newfoundland is ruled by a small group of politicians and a King who claims to be descended from Queen Elizabeth II, making him a member of the House of Windsor. The citizens of Newfoundland still maintain fear of nuclear war, and many still live in the bunkers. The main employer is agriculture, which is subsidised by the state. The second biggest employer is the Royal Newfoundland Navy which, one day, seeks to make contact with the British Isles.

Technological Levels/Advancments: Good at mapping seas, good agricultural knowledge

Territory:Canada (Yukon)
Government History (origins, rise to power etc.):The Obsidian Dominion has no history prior to the nuclear holocaust. It's origins came about 100 years after the holocaust, when a group of survivors first resurfaced. At first they wandered around the same area, living as basic nomads, whilst one by one the less resistant to the radiation would drop dead, slowly thinning the numbers down. Eventually it came to be a few, resistant travellers continuing as they would, but due to the smaller numbers within the tribe, they would become deeply attached to each other, seeing each other as closer than family.

Eventually they would come to see some other, barbaric human life forms around the area, as well as deeply mutated, hostile wildlife. Due to the barbaric nature of the other tribe, and the hostile nature of the surrounding wild life, the few remaining survivors started to dwindle, all until there was just one. He, the strongest mentally and physically of all the original survivors eventually, upon seeing his last companion torn asunder by the chief of one of the savage tribes, the horrific scarred wasteland of what once was a luscious land, the vile inhabitants, finally succumbed to madness.

Now purely being hell-bent on revenge, he returned underground, and rallied more survivors to come to the surface, this time not to simply survive, but to dominate. Out of madness, and despair for his lost allies, he swore that he would build a large black tower, and within each section of wall, would be the mauled body part of a member of one of the tribes that had hunted them. Slowly at first, the construction began, but the unnamed individual was determined upon its completion with his lifetime. He expanded his reach of resources, provoking the tribes further, and angering wildlife. But rather than leaving it just at that, he rallied his forces and spread, hell-bent on domination as a secondary goal and way to speed up the construction of the tower. Homes where burnt, families torn asunder, chieftains skulls smashed in twain, whole tribes forced into slavery, speeding up construction immensely. Folklore has it that if an overseer suspected that the necessary body part had not been placed in the wall, they would rip if off one of the slaves and put it their themselves. the captives were encouraged to mate on large scales, vastly increasing the work force, and very quickly, they wanted twins triplets, large scale workers, and they wanted them quickly. Several years was too long to wait for infants to be ready to work, and the unnamed man knew that if he could not make them grow quicker then he would not live to see the completion. And so they stepped into a dangerous area. Using areas known to have large levels of radiation to mutate infants into large workers, using pools of irradiated water, anything to speed up the process. They would be heavily mutated from the start, and as such would grow extremely quickly, and to extraordinary sizes, although, the same could not be said for their mental capacity
Eventually they managed to mutate babies successfully, able to make them into lumbering hulking abominations, able to do massive workloads, and with the mind of an infant, they would be easier to control.

With the new founded workers, and from where they currently where, the construction of the tower was completed within 15 years, and the unnamed man, now simply referred to as The Glorious Founder, was an old man. The completion of the tower was the only thing driving him, and now, with the last goal complete, the man wandered off into the wastes, some say he met his end there, others say he met salvation, but no one knows. Now, the tower remains as his lasting legacy, and his only son was to rule next to rule. Deep within the tower, in the darkest oldest depths, there is the fabled, Chamber Of Digression, wherein is written the name of the original man, as well as a exalted message from him, but visitation here is an honour bestowed only to the elite Zealots, who after may never speak another word, except in the instance of whispering to the ruler, or now proclaimed "Overlord"

Description: The Obsidian Dominion is a jingoistic state, currently within the wastes of Yukon; Canada. This is seen by militaristic men as a prime location, as by living in the biting colds here, the men will be more accustomed to harsh climates, and as such, have no problem fighting in the most extreme of places. It is heavily military driven, with only some heed being payed to towards the welfare of it’s citizens, however people are free to contribute to society, helping them with their lives should they so wish. Instead, loyalty is an attribute drilled into the citizens by fear, of the Overlord, and the higher up members of state. The Overlord is seen as a dominant, omni-present master of all the state. However rather than simply sit in his tower, he will instead often walk through the lands of his dominion, striking fear into any of the populace to whom he treads near. Should one be even suspected by him, to be doing wrong by the laws, they will be brutally, and swiftly destroyed by him, himself. During wartime, soldiers are kept fiercely loyal, with promises of positions of status and power within society, should they perform well, and with the fears of what would happen, if they would not. What is not more, that fear is kept constantly relevant throughout the war, as the Overlord himself, will be present most of the time, leading the charge of the battles, strategically organising his troops, and cutting a swathe of destruction through the enemies. As such, the Overlord is extremely well trained, in almost every field of combat, in order to ensure his survival. He is outfitted with only the best technology available to the dominion, and will have a flaming dedication to keep alive, as death on the battlefield, is a sign of weakness for the rulers of the Dominion, and the greatest dishonour to the Overlord, and all who surround him. Quite the opposite of what it is for the soldiers. This is a expansive, totalitarian dictatorship, that wishes to see the lands in it’s control, or in flames.

Population levels: Medium to small. As such the armies will be trained to a high standard, and extensive use of huge lumbering, mutated creatures is common.

Technological Levels/Advancements- Due to a smaller population, as compared to that of other nations, the Dominion have tried to make up for this shortfall where they can, training and technology. The technology throughout the land is fairly advanced, as scientific minds are encouraged to contribute in whatever ways they can, and are held with the highest regard throughout society, and as such, despite the lower classes being neglected by the upper classes, scientists are free to contribute how they wish to society, and as such, the lower class can, excluding the tyranny and radiation levels live a somewhat comfortable life. However, the ruling body, mainly the Overlord, however, do encourage mainly, the advancement in weapons. As such, many scientists have turned to developing this, out of hopes of true regard by the overlord himself, as well as the fortune that could come from it. As such, the level of technology for their weapons, exceeds the average in the arsenal of most other nations and they are constantly working on how they can improve the physical capacity of the average soldier, as well as working on how to make even more monstrous mutants, to fight for them

Notable traits, They are very military driven, everything is centred around military excellence, bar the intellectual minds, capable of developing great technology, and as such people will adhere to excellence in combat.
Another notable trait is that of the religious aspect of the dominion. They are very heavily religion driven. The religion instils within the populace a sense of national pride and patriotic tendencies. It holds that those who die in the field of combat, will be rewarded the greatest, and that those who help the war effort, even through research in weaponry, will also be revered in the next world.
A rebellion is seen as one of the worse acts a man can do, and should anybody be scheming, or even mention anything surrounding the assassination of the overlord, that they themselves may be planning will condemn them, all of their family and friends to an eternity of punishment in the next world. Of course this doesn’t apply to people telling the authorities about somebody they know plotting an assassination of the overlord, as this will earn them a high position within society, and many riches.

The leader of the country: The name of the leader of the Obsidian Dominion is: The Obsidian Overlord, however it is often shortened to just The Overlord. The Overlord himself will gain the position if either he inherits it, or should the Old overlord die, without having a living heir, the most appropriate candidate will be selected (He who shows the greatest combat prowess, or hyper intelligence. When selecting the intelligence aspect is the most important, as although the combat prowess can be achieved with constant training, the intelligence is a gift, and as such it is often great minds who take the role should no heir be available. One last aspect is that, should a potential heir be seen as “unfitting” or show no potential in any areas of skill that an Overlord requires, the most suitable candidate will be selected using the above method, and the heir will be given a position of power. Currently there have been no female Overlords, although the potential is there for there to be one, as well, the current Overlord comes from a long line of heirs, and is a direct descendant of the “Original One” He is currently relatively young for an Overlord, as the overlord, should he not fit what is expected, may be modified if necessary to make him stand at least two heads taller that the tallest people of the dominion, as well as being far stronger, as this will instil more fear within the populace of the Overlord himself.

National Capital: Mournhelm; the city to which the tower dominates the centre of, this city is the most technologically advanced of all the dominion, as well as being by far the most security conscious, as this is where the Overlord himself is seated.

Government History (origins, rise to power etc.):The NP had no involvment whatsoever in the Nuclear Holocaust.After the holocaust,a band of surviors headed for the island,hoping to find shelter.When they arrived,they found that the land was farmable.A few years later,a farming community grew.After a while,a band of raiders raided the community.Luckily,a small army of 200 were ready.After the raiders were defeated,the parliment decided it was time to rebuild there society.Currently,they are trying to formalized the army and improve the new education system.

Description:The government's top prioridy at the moment is to gain more land in Nanvut and recreate order within the state.

This will be accepted, if the following changes are made:

No nuclear capacity. I probably should have said this before, but no-one gets nukes.

Lower the population. Considering cities would be bombed hardest, their population would be decimated. I'd say maybe 200,000 at most.

Your realm won't stretch into New York state beyond the peninsula, just to be clear, it will only stretch along the Atlantic coast.

Weapons production will not be at too mass a scale, if you know what I mean.

Territory: Florida, Georgia, Alabama
Government History (origins, rise to power etc.): After the nuclear holocaust, the US southeast was a mess. Finally a group of intelligent men and woman established a government for Florida. The others in the smoking remains of Georgia and Alabama decided to join in. The government consists of the Council of Commons, who makes the laws which are approved by a random group selected off the street.
Description: The Empire of Provinces is a large territory notable for its navy.
Population Levels (within reason): 4,598 and counting
Technological Levels/Advancements: TEOP has made great advancements in naval tactics and are constructing something known to the pubic as a "submarine". TEOP has used the books left behind by the ancients to learn their technologies. A vast library of these books can be located in the capital. TEOP is technological level is about at the year 1954. They are also experimenting with atoms.
Notable Traits (Economic, Military etc.): The economy is booming. The navy contains hundreds of ships, all extremely up to date. Regular naval exercises take place on the hour in Tampa Bay. They love to learn about what it was like before the apocalypse.

Government History (origins, rise to power etc.):The Obsidian Dominion has no history prior to the nuclear holocaust. It's origins came about 100 years after the holocaust, when a group of survivors first resurfaced. At first they wandered around the same area, living as basic nomads, whilst one by one the less resistant to the radiation would drop dead, slowly thinning the numbers down. Eventually it came to be a few, resistant travellers continuing as they would, but due to the smaller numbers within the tribe, they would become deeply attached to each other, seeing each other as closer than family.

Eventually they would come to see some other, barbaric human life forms around the area, as well as deeply mutated, hostile wildlife. Due to the barbaric nature of the other tribe, and the hostile nature of the surrounding wild life, the few remaining survivors started to dwindle, all until there was just one. He, the strongest mentally and physically of all the original survivors eventually, upon seeing his last companion torn asunder by the chief of one of the savage tribes, the horrific scarred wasteland of what once was a luscious land, the vile inhabitants, finally succumbed to madness.

Now purely being hell-bent on revenge, he returned underground, and rallied more survivors to come to the surface, this time not to simply survive, but to dominate. Out of madness, and despair for his lost allies, he swore that he would build a large black tower, and within each section of wall, would be the mauled body part of a member of one of the tribes that had hunted them. Slowly at first, the construction began, but the unnamed individual was determined upon its completion with his lifetime. He expanded his reach of resources, provoking the tribes further, and angering wildlife. But rather than leaving it just at that, he rallied his forces and spread, hell-bent on domination as a secondary goal and way to speed up the construction of the tower. Homes where burnt, families torn asunder, chieftains skulls smashed in twain, whole tribes forced into slavery, speeding up construction immensely. Folklore has it that if an overseer suspected that the necessary body part had not been placed in the wall, they would rip if off one of the slaves and put it their themselves. the captives were encouraged to mate on large scales, vastly increasing the work force, and very quickly, they wanted twins triplets, large scale workers, and they wanted them quickly. Several years was too long to wait for infants to be ready to work, and the unnamed man knew that if he could not make them grow quicker then he would not live to see the completion. And so they stepped into a dangerous area. Using areas known to have large levels of radiation to mutate infants into large workers, using pools of irradiated water, anything to speed up the process. They would be heavily mutated from the start, and as such would grow extremely quickly, and to extraordinary sizes, although, the same could not be said for their mental capacity
Eventually they managed to mutate babies successfully, able to make them into lumbering hulking abominations, able to do massive workloads, and with the mind of an infant, they would be easier to control.

With the new founded workers, and from where they currently where, the construction of the tower was completed within 15 years, and the unnamed man, now simply referred to as The Glorious Founder, was an old man. The completion of the tower was the only thing driving him, and now, with the last goal complete, the man wandered off into the wastes, some say he met his end there, others say he met salvation, but no one knows. Now, the tower remains as his lasting legacy, and his only son was to rule next to rule. Deep within the tower, in the darkest oldest depths, there is the fabled, Chamber Of Digression, wherein is written the name of the original man, as well as a exalted message from him, but visitation here is an honour bestowed only to the elite Zealots, who after may never speak another word, except in the instance of whispering to the ruler, or now proclaimed "Overlord"

Description: The Obsidian Dominion is a jingoistic state, currently within the wastes of Yukon; Canada. This is seen by militaristic men as a prime location, as by living in the biting colds here, the men will be more accustomed to harsh climates, and as such, have no problem fighting in the most extreme of places. It is heavily military driven, with only some heed being payed to towards the welfare of it’s citizens, however people are free to contribute to society, helping them with their lives should they so wish. Instead, loyalty is an attribute drilled into the citizens by fear, of the Overlord, and the higher up members of state. The Overlord is seen as a dominant, omni-present master of all the state. However rather than simply sit in his tower, he will instead often walk through the lands of his dominion, striking fear into any of the populace to whom he treads near. Should one be even suspected by him, to be doing wrong by the laws, they will be brutally, and swiftly destroyed by him, himself. During wartime, soldiers are kept fiercely loyal, with promises of positions of status and power within society, should they perform well, and with the fears of what would happen, if they would not. What is not more, that fear is kept constantly relevant throughout the war, as the Overlord himself, will be present most of the time, leading the charge of the battles, strategically organising his troops, and cutting a swathe of destruction through the enemies. As such, the Overlord is extremely well trained, in almost every field of combat, in order to ensure his survival. He is outfitted with only the best technology available to the dominion, and will have a flaming dedication to keep alive, as death on the battlefield, is a sign of weakness for the rulers of the Dominion, and the greatest dishonour to the Overlord, and all who surround him. Quite the opposite of what it is for the soldiers. This is a expansive, totalitarian dictatorship, that wishes to see the lands in it’s control, or in flames.

Population levels: Medium to small. As such the armies will be trained to a high standard, and extensive use of huge lumbering, mutated creatures is common.

Technological Levels/Advancements- Due to a smaller population, as compared to that of other nations, the Dominion have tried to make up for this shortfall where they can, training and technology. The technology throughout the land is fairly advanced, as scientific minds are encouraged to contribute in whatever ways they can, and are held with the highest regard throughout society, and as such, despite the lower classes being neglected by the upper classes, scientists are free to contribute how they wish to society, and as such, the lower class can, excluding the tyranny and radiation levels live a somewhat comfortable life. However, the ruling body, mainly the Overlord, however, do encourage mainly, the advancement in weapons. As such, many scientists have turned to developing this, out of hopes of true regard by the overlord himself, as well as the fortune that could come from it. As such, the level of technology for their weapons, exceeds the average in the arsenal of most other nations and they are constantly working on how they can improve the physical capacity of the average soldier, as well as working on how to make even more monstrous mutants, to fight for them

Notable traits, They are very military driven, everything is centred around military excellence, bar the intellectual minds, capable of developing great technology, and as such people will adhere to excellence in combat.
Another notable trait is that of the religious aspect of the dominion. They are very heavily religion driven. The religion instils within the populace a sense of national pride and patriotic tendencies. It holds that those who die in the field of combat, will be rewarded the greatest, and that those who help the war effort, even through research in weaponry, will also be revered in the next world.
A rebellion is seen as one of the worse acts a man can do, and should anybody be scheming, or even mention anything surrounding the assassination of the overlord, that they themselves may be planning will condemn them, all of their family and friends to an eternity of punishment in the next world. Of course this doesn’t apply to people telling the authorities about somebody they know plotting an assassination of the overlord, as this will earn them a high position within society, and many riches.

The leader of the country: The name of the leader of the Obsidian Dominion is: The Obsidian Overlord, however it is often shortened to just The Overlord. The Overlord himself will gain the position if either he inherits it, or should the Old overlord die, without having a living heir, the most appropriate candidate will be selected (He who shows the greatest combat prowess, or hyper intelligence. When selecting the intelligence aspect is the most important, as although the combat prowess can be achieved with constant training, the intelligence is a gift, and as such it is often great minds who take the role should no heir be available. One last aspect is that, should a potential heir be seen as “unfitting” or show no potential in any areas of skill that an Overlord requires, the most suitable candidate will be selected using the above method, and the heir will be given a position of power. Currently there have been no female Overlords, although the potential is there for there to be one, as well, the current Overlord comes from a long line of heirs, and is a direct descendant of the “Original One” He is currently relatively young for an Overlord, as the overlord, should he not fit what is expected, may be modified if necessary to make him stand at least two heads taller that the tallest people of the dominion, as well as being far stronger, as this will instil more fear within the populace of the Overlord himself.

National Capital: Mournhelm; the city to which the tower dominates the centre of, this city is the most technologically advanced of all the dominion, as well as being by far the most security conscious, as this is where the Overlord himself is seated.

Yes, it's more of a coastal nation. As long as I retain New York and DC, I'm fine. The only 'all inclusive' states I have are Delaware and New Jersey. Lore-wise, we don't like the Appalachian mountains. Family clans that are mutated beyond belief and such.

To do with 1954, you have access to futuristic technology (laser guns, robots, etc.) and mutated animals and people are present, but tech will only be constructed by artisans. No mass production will be possible. Also, does your territory contain former Atlanta and Birmingham? I'm just gauging how far North it reaches considering the borders will be quite fluid and may not follow state lines.

Your population could be higher as well, maybe up to 20,000-50,000.

Nuclear radiation would be horrific for years.

And the 300 year time-scale refers to the total amount of time from the bombs, not the time taken to leave the shelters. They left at different points over the course of a century.

Description: The US senates southern members and several branches of the national guard fled to the bunkers in time. After so long they emerged with the immediate threat of long term radiation was over. 100 years later they found their states divided. The slavers who united the south in its various confederations merged withe the new republic. Plantations re-emerged again as slavery became a way of life. The ugliness of segregation re-emerged as well. Theaters are a common place of greek tragedies and other old novels of pre-war. Only males can participate in politics.The pureblood families descendant from the bunkers segregate themselves from the vast majority of the population within the capital of columbia.

Technological Levels/Advancments: 1961: Has a small navy and has been gathering knowledge of the old world for the past 200 hundred years. Suburbia is extremely common minus the fact that carriages instead of cars are common. The education system has sprouted schools in every city and town. Society is divided between the middle class plebians, slaves, serfs, pureblood patricians, and mutants.
Notable Traits (Economic, Military etc.): The economy is a powerhouse. Industry is mainly britain pre-1850 with some mills working. Apprenticeship and small scale production of goods is common again. The dollar is blue containing pre-war leaders. Life is similiar to the way it was 1961 as women typically stay in the seperate sphere aided by countless numbers of servants. Life expectancy is higher thanks to the creation of the national medical society to refunction hospitals and clinics. The flu once rampant has been scaled down. The citadel is the site of the national scientific society of America. The capital of columbia is a walled fortress where the patricians live. A sort of coliseum is used to decide the public fate of prisoners. It is called the executionary rounds. The patricians themselves being pureblood denote their hair by dying it white. The southern drawl itself the patricians speak is different from the commoners language. All the luxuries go to the people of columbia leaving some lack of luxury among many residents. Jewels are worn as a calling card in case of a crime
