You look back on history of colonies, and unless they're literally pouring out gold like Spanish colonies did in South America, cost alot to maintain. Especially after further globalization and other nations establishig their own colonies, their efficiency decreased and their original purpose such as fur, spices, silk were gone. Why did Britain let go of some colonies early 1900s like Canada, Austrailia, etc? Many reason for that, one of them being expensive to keep. They're not quite the gold mine as you make it sound like they are.

You want to talk colonies, buddy? Let's talk about the Belgian Congo, a place the Belgians did not let go until the 1960;s, as it was valuable. Extremely valuable. It is a money pump in every sense of the word. Britain let those colonies go because they protested for self rule and got it, the alternative was less than pretty. The Congo has access to resources that, quite frankly, no other African colony has. Sure, the Africans live poorly, their labours go to funding Belgium, but that is how it was in reality, as well.
