Guys, he has a reasonable backstory with an explanation for these things, and it's not really that outside of the realm of possibility. I'd say go for it.

As a suggestion, it might be nice to expand your links with Europe by having a European nation send a geological expedition. This would satisfy people, provide a boost to your technological know-how, and give an iron-clad reason for having oil earlier than IRL.

Then please please just read my backstory and it'll make more sense. Or check out Walter Rodney's "how Europe underdeveloped Africa" then you'll see how we can be close to the same level or even at the level, of most western nations

Really, if it bothers people, just have him insert this line into his backstory: "And the <insert name of ruler here> saw that the way of the future was industrialization, as he looked at the world. Realizing that there was little time to spare, he sent a call out to all the major European universities, inviting the premier architects of the Industrial Revolution to come and establish a new university in his nation. Enticed by a new continent, exotic locales, and a healthy paycheck, scholars poured into Africa by the dozens. Within a few short decades, the university had rapidly expanded, educating the population and planting the seeds for rapid-scale industrialization, equal to if not superior, that of the Europeans."

Bam. Not that hard, nice little compromise, and then we all get over this. Honestly, I think it's fine as it is, but if it makes everyone get over the issue....

First university in the world was actually Timbuktu, established by an African empire. Plus we had our own industrial revolution. We did take ideas from Europe, but has equals, not as a catch up game.

I totally get that. However, Ive always believed that the way Europe interacted with Africa seriously underdeveloped it, which is something backed by MANY writings. That among other things. I fixed a lot of those issues in my backstory and added other things in. That is why my nation can rival Western nations.

Oooh, you could call for a conference of some sort. I'd suggest using the Victorian Ticker Tape IC thread to set the background, and then make the IC thread for that.

Austria would probably fund Switzerland against the Western menace... Speaking of which, we should really have a world conference of some sort just to get diplomatic relations in progress and establish national stances.
