My impression was that the Hegemony are there as representatives of the Hegemony, while the Alliance runs the ship and Trade Union thingy. Same ship and all, but different characters.

Probably not. How would you control it? We're all one big organism. However, as technology advances, I think we could think of opening up biological trade-offs.

Gotcha. It's a mental connection - the otter will be able to understand the snake through his own mind. His native tongue can thus be translated as needed, or something. It's like telepathy but I don't want to be a tool and just come out and say it.

The Haikala don't fear death, they believe they will join their ancestors. The Neko is terrified and hid. The Lamia are too used to being solitary to have any reaction that involves crying out. The Vika have a hive mind, enough said.

Another species to the North. The Veritch know of only four species. The Veritch, the Ammar, the Basajuan, and occasionally the elf people to the south (sorry, can't remember the name).

So basically, they hope that if they don't know you, you might know the Basajuan, and recognize the Basajuan treaty flag.
