Hey, technically Artemus is a Drac. He's from Quentin after all, which was conquered on 3039 by the DC when he was 4.
Or, even better, he could be a secret clanner
I mean, where was the Jade Falcon Lambda galaxy at exactly?

Working on it, although technically we're still waiting for HP to chime back in...Ularn wrote:Reading this conversation I reckon I should probably rewrite Chris' backstory a little. At the moment both he and Jaz are Taurian, for no other reason that the fact it was the only faction listed in the OP so in the absence of any other understanding of the Battletech universe it seemed like a fair starting point for a backstory. Now I've spent some more time getting the hang of stuff I want to change at least one of them and while Jaz's backstory and heritage has become the subject of a few conversations Chris' is probably still fluid enough to change a bit.
Anyhoo, can someone post? Until HP can get back online and have James reply to Jaz' scathing or SaintB gives Ronin's team something to shoot at (he could probably post the results of Bear's missile volley as well) there's not much I can do.
Also, we need more support characters - Chris wants someone to talk to!
Er, so far Chris is the only Aerotech pilot, and despite the dropout rate and non-responders there are still plenty of mechwarriors...Oblivion2 wrote:Could make a second 'mechwarrior later in the RP if SaintB doesn't have any issues.

Yeah well that still wouldn't explain why he's a merc. Generally they're either gleaned from discharged regulars from the national armed forces or start from the get-go.Ularn wrote:Northern Dominus wrote:As far as Chris' origins, what do you have in mind?
Dunno really. To be honest I was thinking middle class upbringing on some relatively wealthy inner-sphere world - the sort of background which implies he could probably have been doing something with a better pay rate if he had done a different university degree and not been so eager to fly spacecraft.Northern Dominus wrote: Er, so far Chris is the only Aerotech pilot, and despite the dropout rate and non-responders there are still plenty of mechwarriors...
We could use someone to lead the Aerospace wing; Chris doesn't have any kind of combat experience which means the only way he could be in charge was if the other three pilots had never even been in a cockpit before. At the moment I think the plan is to have an NPC fill the roll for a while and then have them shot down and killed once Chris has the experience to take over, but if someone makes an experienced pilot we could have them in charge on a more permanent basis.
Alternatively, we probably have room for some more mechanics or anything else SaintB agrees upon.

It helps to have a nation in mind and build off of that.

Alright, that works so far... then if that's the case best guess would make him either Lyran or Drac. They seem stuffy enough to boot somebody for implants.Ularn wrote:Northern Dominus wrote:Yeah well that still wouldn't explain why he's a merc. Chris became a merc because he'd romanticised the idea of being a fighter pilot and wanted to do it even though hes probably smart enough to have sought a much better paying civilian career. However, even with his implants, Chris couldn't satisfy the medical requirements of whatever the local faction's armed forces were, so he joined up with GSS because Bear's brigade wasn't so stringent about its entry requirements.

Well nobody cares about the Dracs...right up until the 1st Sword of Light makes planetfall and starts mauling the local militia.Ularn wrote:Northern Dominus wrote: Alright, that works so far... then if that's the case best guess would make him either Lyran or Drac. He wasn't exactly booted because of the implants. The first time he applied he was told his eyesight was below the required standard. The implants improved his vision to be better than what was required but because the enhancement was artificial they still wouldn't let him in. I guess it was still down to stuffiness though, and Lyran sounds better than Drac, since apparently "no-one cares about the Dracs"
Now to read up the wiki on Lyrans

Prosthetics are one thing entirely, but if you're going the route of Mass Effect implants there's really only one faction that has access to that sort of technology...and they're not exactly the good guys.
Also I'm still fuzzy as to how implants would get a talented aerospace pilot kicked out of any faction in the Battletech franchise. Even "augment" prejudice wouldn't get anyone completely booted either...

Not prosthetics; more like built-in glasses and TV screen - probably much less complicated than a neurohelmet
Perhaps part of the problem is I already had the idea for Chris before I ever saw this RP; he's a character idea I've tried to use in several sci-fi RPs in the past but they kept dying before they got anywhere. Although he could fit into most of those newly created RP universes with little difficulty, maybe importing him into Battletech's pre-made universe is causing some problems.
Anyway, the problem wasn't meant to be that Chris used implants; the problem was that before getting the implants his eyes weren't good enough to satisfy the recruitment criteria, and after he got the implants his position was like that of a modern prospective airforce pilot who wore contacts. Sure, your eyesight may be up to standard with the lenses/implants, but it wasn't naturally, so we're not going to run the risk of recruiting you and then have the lenses fall out/implant malfunction while you're in an aircraft. If that doesn't make sense, we can always just say the recruitment officer Chris got was an asshole who misread the criteria.
. That being said, it's not like Neurohelmets just display data and keep things upright circa 3067. For Battlemechs, neurohelmets can feed a bit of kinesthetic sense of limb position into mechwarriors, and aerospace pilots get a subtle VR sense, and there's the clarification to commands given via manual controls thing.

Also...did james miss two different sets of orders to get in echelon right formation? Presumably with him in the center, Jazz taking up the rear and Artemus at point?
I was referencing a running gag in Saints Row.
And yes, because it's either I read every post in the IC or just make a fucking post already and go from there. Blame it on him not being able to focus right now.
