I may be wrong but in the board game rules which I am loosely trying to adhere too the maximum range you can detect an enemy with sensors is 600 meters if they are powered up AND using active sensors too. Running passive scanners and powering down halves the distance respectively.

There are exceptions like Beagle and Bloodhound and Guardian and Angel...

However there is really no defense for line of site and that is what most pilots rely on to attack.

OK. Figured that was the case, anyways.

Long story short, until the shots start flying switch sensors to passive and terrain mask as best as possible. Unless of course you happen to be driving a "missle boat", then by all means switch back on and fire away :p

Now I'm going to take a vote: Who wants to keep the course with what we are doing and Rp the rest of the test involving the 160k/h suicide machine and who wants to get on to the combat test? First to 5 votes is the winner.

Just a thought while I was looking at the map, SaintB, but in the future I'd suggest saving the images as a .png instead of .jpg as you'll get a much clearer image with no artefacts from compression.

I wanted too but the program defaults to jpg and wouldn't let me change it. I'm a trained graphic artist and use png for everything when I can. Next time I think ill import it to GIMP and save it from there

Yeah and while you're at it...wait... dubya tee eff.. I understand the basics but would anybody like to clue in the non-graphically inclined of us here? Google-fu says something about compression vs conversion....

And hey, take whatever time you need SaintB, but didn't we sort of vote on nominating HPT for a co-GM if SaintB wanted somebody to fill in?

I'd volunteer, but there seems to be a lot of tabletop-based gameplay, and that's not exactly my area of expertise.

Different file formats take up different amounts of space. When an image file is saved as example.jpg some of the data is cut out in order to save memory space. This results in poorer quality images with less detail and "artefacts" which basically look like scrambled bits of colour in the picture. If you look at SaintB's map, those fuzzy areas at the edges of hexagons and especially in the middle of the lake are artefacts. On the other hand, save a file as example.png and, for reasons I don't fully understand, you still get a file that takes up very little memory space (compared to saving it as example.bmp which gives great quality but at the cost of massive file sizes, as the colour of each pixel is recorded individually) but without losing data or creating artefacts. This is why, whenever possible, you should save in a .png format rather than .jpg, but for some reason many programs, applications or websites use .jpg as the default or only way to save images created with them,

Also, just a thought, but are there any support staff characters still active? I was thinking they could do something just to keep us occupied and the thread ticking over while SaintB gets the mission set up. It wouldn't be anything impacting the story, so no extra work form him and, like I say, it might be good for the thread.

Oooooh okay, suddenly it all makes sense...sorta :p Sort of like word document formatting and whatnot.

As far as the support staff...I'd have to ask Saint but I'm thinking about coming up with staff myself. I'm curious to know if the Corsair is the only Aerotech fighter that GSS uses in any meaningful way or if there's perhaps a heavier "strike fighter" type they use as well for starters?

Well, we only got 4 fighters... Corsairs are plentiful relatively cheap and can perform multiple roles. They were designed mostly as an interceptor and that is why they have all lasers. We got 4 dropships - 3 which are Leopards and a Gazelle and the Corsairs main mission in GSS is to protect the droppers from enemy fighters. The OOC reason I picked them is similar to the IC they are cheap, reliable, and they fall very nicely into the BV I picked for the 'mechs.

Anyway if the support guys want to do something like get into a tavern brawl or talk about how the GSS flight wing is totally boned I don't care ;). I found a way to write posts on my computer and save them to my phone for posting so we can move along much faster now too.

Of course, once Chris gets his hands on some sort of missile launcher to replace his Large Lasers with, the Corsair Wing gets some strike capacity.

Finally found a good theme for Julius! Sympathy for the Devil.

I chose this because I feel Julius knows he has perhaps a very bad occupation. He accepts that what he does for a living means the death of others, real people with real morals and real families. He accepts that fact; and the idea that war is a drug, has always dragged him back, though that less affects my choice.

And like in Sympathy for the Devil, Julius takes it in stride. The song isn't a downer-type; it's real upbeat, in fact.

And I'll just use Preussens Gloria for Duke.

So out of an entire soundtrack and score absolutely NOTHING fits for Julius?

Well it's not unheard of for arena jocks to use tactics in the larger arenas. :p

And in any event it really doesn't matter, because the last time I looked Bear was still in overall command until noted otherwise

Hi my name is SaintB and I am prone to sarcasm and hyperbole. Because of this I make no warranties, express or implied, concerning the accuracy, completeness, reliability or suitability of the above statement, of its constituent parts, or of any supporting data. These terms are subject to change without notice from myself.

Every day NationStates tells me I have one issue. I am pretty sure I've got more than that.
