Cadmus, The Orleans Folk

The money and people from the Hegemon was a blessing from the Loa. The Madame knew the marks of a debt that the Hierarchy had given to her people and the money would be used to further the vision she had from the Loa. They were coming back to their last people, the visions were faint but they were speaking to them. The rituals, no matter faint, would need to be retaught to the new people. A culture taught from the Men of Iron and the building of the of more, mobile homes.

The men of the Hierarchy didn't know the nomadic customs of the Folk but they themselves were willing to teach. The Madame saw that this way of life was destined to be as they search for something the Xcotl called Spice. It was something she viewed would be the thing that would bring the restoration of their fabled city and bring their people from the depths of eradication. It was a necessary step in order to make their destiny come true.

Have all 500 people work on making an encampment(Labor V, Wealth IV)

Bight of the Whitehills, Rivermouth, Stalheim Hierarchy
Nineteenth of Windheight, Year 377 of the Common Era

The stiff winds off of the craggy faces of Bight cracked and snapped in the heavy sails of the Sea's Pride, marines and men of the waves bustling to and fro upon her decks at the jobs that were required to maintain such a formidable vessel. In the air was the stink of tar, and pitch, and the sweat and salt of men laboring under a hot sun after being lashed by the breezes of a body of brine. Commander Torol Bluenight rested his callused hands on the polished wood of the balustrade, and nodded to his second who stood before the tiller.

"New orders. Shakedown, north towards Tarasheim. The Harbormaster has news from up beyond the Wash. Brigands, raiding and burning in Stormwind."

First Mate Andreivei heaved on the massive rudder, gears and mechanisms turning to convert the strength of one man into the turning of the ship, vast beyond reckoning of his ancestors. Two hundred men crewed her oars, serfs and military washouts given stipends to drive the machine of war, and more still walked her decks as archers, soldiers prepared to fight upon the waves, and those charges with trimming her sails and the maintenance of her capabilities. Poor and those of some wealth rowed together, seeking advancement within the Harbormaster's eyes..

"Course north set, Commander. Shall I order the pace increased so we make Tarasheim by nightfall?"

The black-haired captain of the Sea's Pride considered for a moment, gazing at the choppy froth touching the waves in the Bight, and looking up to note the fluttering of the pennant at the apex of the great vessel's mast.

"Yes, that seems appropriate. The wind is out of the east, so we may not rely on it overmuch. And if there are raiders as far north as Stormwind, we shall need to make a good pace. Sound the drums."

At the rear of the vessel, near the stern keel, the rhymatist had already been listening to the two men speak. His steady tam-tam began to pick up, after a brief cadence to call the half of the crew resting on their oars to stand ready. Through the water the mighty ship began to grind at speed, the keen stiff tendrils of wood at either side of the vessel moving in time with the drumming. A creature of wood and blood and bone and bronze, it wended its way northwards, a fist of might upon the sea.

The Honori People
Proud warriors, all!

... Elsewhere in the desert vale, a band of five makes the arduous trek through the sandy wastes, across the sea to their neighbors in Khasut, where the tongue of Asl is spoken, and the people adorn themselves in great purple and silver. On the backs of black camels, they make their journey, stopping little, and traveling light. Upon the first sight of the mighty city of High King Tafari, one of the messengers stopped, fell to her knees, and spoke thus unto the land. "Oh noble Gods of this city and her people. Oh Silar above. Oh Lunda below. Oh all spirits of this land. Oh spirits of the wind. Oh spirits of the mountains. Oh spirits of the rivers. Oh spirits of the earth. Oh noble ancestors of these people, Oh harbingers of divine will, Oh creatures of these lands- hear our message! We come here upon the tail of a most humble duty, of old rights, of traditions, of duty. We come- before you now- to declare our noble intentions. We come here, by the will of one Princess Neferata's guardian, our most righteous Mistress, Yuni Te'kal, to seek a blessing. For the Matriarch of this most righteous of house to bless, and consent to the most blessed of marriages. From the vine of the highest love, bears the fruit of the most truest affection. From the fruit of love, brews the wine of most passionate desire, carnal buds for the most beautiful blooms. To this most sacred, and rightful unions, we do beseech thy blessing- for the marriage and binding of house Tafari, to that of house Barbati, by hand of most pious Neferata, and most zealous Raegin. Be this begging offer be done in good faith, seen before all spirits of this land, or be I struck down where I stand!" *Taking her spear in hand, she then snaps it atop her knee, and throws the two halves before the ground. before her feet.
Continuing unto the land, the band of five soon approached the gates of the city, and, dismounting from their camels, another of the women spoke thus unto them.
"Oh people of this noble city, oh most highest of nobles, most valiant of warriors, most loyal of husbands and most vigilant of wives, we come here most humbly, bearing a message, in the most purest intentions. We come to you in the most humble, and traditional of sacred duties- and we do beg, should we betray them, may my head belong upon a pike!"
She then takes her own spear- symbolically snaps it in two, and drops it before the gates of the city.
"We come with the most fair and honorable of all requests- of the ancient tradition, and do call upon the mother of house Tafari, to most humbly, upon our very knees, request, in the name of our most righteous mistress, high priestess of the moon-goddess Lunda, protector of Mara and the Honori People, Yuni Te'kal, to beg thy will, and bless the binding of house Barbati and Tafari in the most sacred of unions, between noble Raegin, champion of the Northmen of Mara, and proud Neferata, the pride of our sisterhood. Should we betray our traditions, and offend the people of this city in our requests, may we be cast out, and never given water nor shelter, for as long as we may live."
She falls to her knees, and, bowing before the gates, touches her head to the sand, before standing, and awaiting a response from whoshouldever greet them.

Both hearing the words and seeing her actions, the gate's captain seems to signal to someone within the city. There is a brief exchange of words before he opens the way for the messengers. Upon entering the city, they noticed that it is crowded there are people moving goods about the city, homes are being constructed and varous large structures are visible around the city.In the city center a large pillar erected to commemorate all the Kings of Nekhen stands tall above the city training grounds. Around them they see signs of homlessness even as new homes are being constructed nearby. While it should be expected, word of their approach had reached the High King as he greeted them here in the training grounds as the noise and crowds didn't seem to be as bad within the mostly unused space of the city. Beside him stood two young men, and beside one of these men a woman nearly his age. The older dressed similarly to the man who opened the gates to the messengers, the other younger by only a few years. The woman dressed as if she were a noble of some prestige. Around them the messengers saw other members of the court though the boy's mother seemed to be absent. Tafari spoke to them.

"Welcome, women of Mara. Our city is always open to you and your people. You have arrived at the eve of a great festivity. My son and heir, Ramesses is to take a wife. Which, if my sentry's words are true, will be what awaits you when you return to Mara." He seems very happy that his daughter had found love across the Serapis Desert. "I of course will bless my daughter's marriage and will wish to return with you to see it through." He then put up a hand, "But first, we have a wedding here to celebrate and I would be honored if you were all present for such an occasion."
SheepieYesterday at 8:01 AM
Bowing, the eldest of the women smiled, and then spoke thus unto the high king. "Your words are kind. Surely the God's gaze doth shine brightly down upon your son's marriage. If I may, Noble king, where is her mother, if she still Grace the earth with her steps. And if not, has she sistered? I wish to meet with them, and ask them, as is the will of the Divine, and the mortal."

Tafari gave them a solemn look before patting his son's shoulder. "Unfortunately, my wife has passed some time ago. I am not surprised that Neferata hid that from others. She had been quite a private child when she was here and her letters do not divulge too much of her daily activities" He looked downwards and sighed, and unfortunately she was the last of her family. The Melqart line was the only other one which could contest the throne during the interregnum and many of their family and my own were slain during the infighting. Only she and her father remained. It was his dying wish that she become queen. So to end the fighting that is what happened, I married her and we took the throne together."

"We are very sorry to hear of your loss. But from her was born one of the most beautiful of women to walk this earth. And I am certain of the bounties of blessings the earth received by every step she took upon it. No matter then, as patriarch, the gods look down upon your blessing with their just Creed. We would be honored to join you in celebration, and may a thousand blessings fall upon the man and bride."

Tafari nodded and said, "Then make yourselves at home within my halls. The festivities have begun, as the union is to take place tomorrow to be greeted by the rising of the sun." He gestured towards the modest homes which made up the royal estate here in Khasut. They were not much larger than the structures used by the majority of the inhabitants.

Year 379 of the Common Era - Turn 28

The Scourge of Serys
With much fanfare, the wayns and multitudes of the Midnight Horde departs the realm of the men of Serys. With them travel armloads of wealth - trinkets and baubles of pure, unmolten gold. And the men of Serys also; three hundred of the flower of their youth. The Lord of the Earth has had his due.

The Coming Storm
On the lowland fields of the men of Fergdal lie the men of the Bloodright camped and quartered. As the cycles of coldest months come and go - one truth goes all the more certain: the beast is staying. Their multitudes blacken the hillsides in a great, sprawling nest of tents and shanties - resounding to the noise of their unnumbered multitudes. And the fires of industry also - for some fresh devilry is planned in their midst; one carried by hooks and hosts of tall ladders. As months pass, they drink rivers dry and relying heavily on their Fergdal hosts for food and fodder. Yet this is hardly all the Horde devours. For from the realm of the Zhou come messengers bearing tribute in craft - battle-skins in worked iron, gleaming and gaudy. In due course, the remaining sons of Zhou are released - free to bow once more before their Empress.

And it is to the Zhou once more that Bloodright emissaries come, requesting homage and tribute - not in craft and iron this time; but a war-host, such as the men of Zhou can muster. To stand and battle in a short, sweet, campaign.

Its specifics are, once again, a jumble - but within the shadowy avenues of its exact practices lies the patterned gateway to new understandings. Understandings beyond what it means to be human.

Turn 27
The men of craft amongst the Clan-Marchers continue their attempts at bow-making as best they can. Without the advice of the Brexon kin, however – advantages are few and far between. Their own kin, meanwhile, scrape a living together as best they can from the Mother Mountains. Harsh and lonely are times like these, but perhaps this is for the best. After all, hard times make hard men.

Year 1 of the reign of Wizard-King Votan

Image

A new age dawned on Xcotl. Terrible news had marked the City of the Dead. For a wise and great leader had died, his soul gone to the Other World the Great Beyond. The reign of Wizard-King Itzcoatl had come to an end. He had died in his sleep an old man in his last breath a fitting end for a great leader.

The mystics had always clamored of how ancient he was even in his youth. The Wizard-King Itzcoatl had steered Xcotl through the crisis, he fought against the Horde using his magicks and wisdom and the reigned victorious. He saw Xcotl change from a city of mud to stone, and in his wisdom and guidance the Xcotl had survived and thrived against the ravishes of the world.

Now his one and only son Prince Votan would take the reigns and rule over the entire empire ascending to become the new Wizard-King of all Xcotl. He would see fit that his father's proud legacy would continue and that he would drive Xcotl to new heights greater than before ruling as wise and just ruler over all his people. Time would tell but many in the Magnum Opus believed that as his father Votan would be the leader Xcotl needs to rise triumphant into the future.

For the forces of Chaos gathered. In the north whispers rumors of plague, a nightmare from hell itself. The Horde was breathing down their necks ready to strike like locusts onto a field. Wizard-King Votan knew that Xcotl needed to prepare so he ordered the construction of a grand Obelisk of Healing that would be seen leagues away from the horizon. Soon the Obelisk was completed by two years time and it glowed with arcane power, ready to serve the Warriors of Xcotl so that they may continue to live another day, to fight. When that fateful day of blood war arrived they would be ready.

The Sons of Saladon
Serrith
Image

The arrival to Serrith, took longer then what was expected, regardless the Clan-Marchers we're making steadfast pace, and we're content with the progress. They hoisted great tents, and built up camp fires. They begun to eat food that they had gathered, and enjoyed feasting with kin.

It wouldn't take long until the Serrin's preyed their eyes on this sight. Wary from past tithes, they we're uncomfortable with the sight of a large crowd of men. Perhaps unwilling to tolerate anymore roving hordes. Regardless the Saeling folk we're unhindered by this tense aura, continue preparing their camps. They however hoped to alleviate this tense air, and the Lord-Imperator requested a audience with the king. While Hanson went off to talk to the king of the Serrins, his 3 sons continued barking orders he would've otherwise bark.

The Artisans continue their arduous bow-work. The Free-folk, guzzle Serrith's best beverages telling their quest and desire to embark on a distant citystate, hoping to find the great city of the Asling, seeking great knowledge from the distant realm. The Saladonian Marcher's (soldiers), work with steadfast work placing tents and other comforts for the horde. The hard work of the Saeling's journey has only just begun. Ambassador Vitus Lothbek is sent to discuss the citystate that the Saladonian's sought.

Hanson’s Clan-Marchers - 300 Proud Clansfolk
(A diplomat is sent to Ellander ahead of time, or to the diplomat of Ellander in Serrith; if he/she exists)
(Hanson requests the audience of the Serrin King promising him good intentions
100 Artisans: continue their bow-work on their way to Ellander.
100 freefolk: The freefolk offer their services as labors upon this year, desiring to make money for the clans, upon the end of their days they drink Serrith's best beverages in the city. Serrins know to find a Saeling is where one drinks the best beverages in Serrith.
100 peasants/warriors: Seeking to recruit those who are willing to commit to the great journey, to a land promising both knowledge and promise, and expresses a intent to return with this knowledge for the sake of all people of Ivaria.

Saladonian Bow Design - desired to be flexible and strong. Aiming for ranges farther then that of a average bow.

The Honori People
Proud warriors, loyal lovers.

Although not yet codified into the law, the house of the Queen mother was seen as a nigh royal family, given the treatment of princes for their proximity to their queen. So of course, the streets were lined with hundreds upon the night of her adopted daughter's wedding. Ever since the dawn, celebrants had begun to crowd the plazas and markets, as a somewhat chaotic frenzy takes over the city. From the depths of the Matriarch's purse, the day was to be a lavish day of feasting. Meat, milk, wine, and many many other luxurious goods were handed out by her orders, for mere fractions of the cost, if not free. Sweet pastries, baked into the shapes of infants, began to fill the air with the smells of joy, while vast ammounts of hot drinks of currents, berries, cinnamon, and wine began to accompany them into the air from every house and home of Mara. Servants scurried down the streets, clearing them, and lining them with flowers for what was to come. A great pathway, throughout the city began to be lined out- into every temple, into every garden, through every square. It was to be a public spectacle just as it was a joyous occasion.

The bride and her groom were seperated the three nights preceding the occasion, sequestered with their families for ancient rights and duties before their marriage. The groom was to keep an all-night vigil protecting his family's sacred hearth, while the bride sat alone before the alter of the mother goddess- silent in her prayers and quiet contemplation on the next stage of her life to come.

On the dawn of their wedding day, the two families gathered in the great plaza before the temple of rule. The mighty obelisk to their city stood tall above the scene, while the gentle breeze graced their hair, cooling their skin, and calming their nerves. There stood the mighty king of Nekken, his strong gaze looking onto his sister with pride. Beside him was the queen of Mara, the girl's mentor, who looked upon her child with abundance of joy. Joined by attendents and family of both Honori and Aslani blood, they formed one great house upon this day, to pay homage to ancient tradition. The house of Nekken-Te'kal, the official House for the Aslani royals in Mara. For today, the two rulers would act in rituals as husband and wife, mother and father to the child- dressing her, coaching her, and praying for her up into this moment. When all had gathered, the oldest woman of house Barbati stepped forwards, and gave a short bow to the two.

"My mistress," she began, "I come to you upon this day to humbly request a binding of our two houses. For my son, Raegin Barbati, to be lawfully bound to thy daughter, Neferkara, the wisest of students, the most beautiful of women, the most glorious of hearts. We offer our son unto thy house- to sit at your hearth, to bare thy name."

"Honored mother," the queen spoke, "I hear thy words and praises loud and clear. Thy intentions are pure, thy will is strong, thy son is Honorable. I do accept your offer, to take him into my home, warm him at my hearth, protect him and raise him as a son, always. I offer you a herd of black camels for your most Noble offer. Should this blessing ever become a plight, thy son may go home, while the camel come back to my pasture.

"We accept thy dowry and gift with open arms, it will be done."

The horde woman turns her grandson to face her- grasping his shoulders, and looking at him in the eye, her own nearly in tears. "My child. Do you wish to leave this house, to leave this home, to leave this family, to join the one you love?"

The boy looks at his grandmother, who's tears of grieving joy wrestle in his heartstrings, and hugs her, holding her dearly. "Yes mother, I do wish to go."

She breaks the hug, and looks at him one more time. "You will always be welcome back home, even to visit. Thy father will always protect you, though you will not be ours anymore." She lets him go, and he turns back to face his new bride.

The Queen mother turns Neferkara, and holds her by the shoulders. "My daughter, are you ready to take on a new family? To build a hearth of your own? Many a challenge will await you in this new life, but if you are willing, thy family will be with you for the entire journey."

"I am ready, mother."

"Then go, take your new husband." She says, and let's the girl go.

With a short spur from his grandmother, the boy crosses the plaza, and embraces his new bride. The crowd begins to cheer, and the drinks begin to be served. Music begins to fill the streets, and as the day moves into the night, the celebrations are held by firelight, up through the night, until the very next dawning of a new day.

Year 381 of the Common Era - Turn 29

The Scourge of Serys
With the men of the Midnight Horde departed from the lands of Serys, a sense of normalcy returned to the mountain valleys once more. 'Ere long, word from travelers along the coastal plains described a host descending on the lands of the Ita - demanding fodder and tribute from the men of the southern vales.

The Siege of Xcotl
“UUURRREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!”

A long, mournful wail cut the day, rent the air and sent flocks of birds on the wing. A hell-call of soot and anger; birthed from the mouth of a great, bronze-banded war-horn. The sort wielded with straps curled about its bearer’s naked torso – one as black and mean as the horn’s own wail. To the men and women of fair Xotl, the reports of their scouts was proven true in this hour: the Bloodright had come – their banners black against the dawn’s horizon.

They had not come to parley. Nor grow old.

Not even an hour earlier, skads of black-skinned Bloodright reavers had come galloping, mounted on beasts long of leg and swift of hoof – much, no doubt, to the consternation of the poor peasants working in the fields beyond Xotl’s walls. Barely had the beacons been lit before the foe was there amongst them. But alas. Their warnings were heeded, and by the light of their alarm a mere handful of Xcotl’s sons fell to the foe’s clutches. A bitter fate, aye – but one that could have been so much worse. Yet what comfort is that to bereaved mothers?

At any rate; the horn’s hell-call heralded a forest of banners on the horizon; the battle-bray of an unnumbered multitude of warriors. To the watchful eyes of the men of Xcotl, surveying them from atop their mighty wall, the foes blackening their hillsides must have looked as formidable as ants. And why should they not? Say what you would of the men of Xcotl, but they had ringed their homes in walls of stone higher and grander than any yet seen by the men of the Bloodright. Or indeed any men in any age. If the sight of it made their foemen’s courage falter? Well. They scarce showed it. For what men would show cowardice before his fellows? None worthy of praise, surely – nor loyal service from their lessers.

And by the gods, such lessers were indeed counted amongst the Bloodright that day. The Horde had not come alone. Beside the Bloodright’s own ox-red banners, the men of Xcotl spied also the tasseled battle-flags of distant Fergdal. Warbands of these lowland brawlers had found courage in their master’s shadow – or as much courage as any men might have in fear of greater terrors. Now their serried ranks stood formed, shoulder to shoulder, with men of even stranger garb and gear. Dark men of Orleans, shaggy Wastelanders armed with axes of gleaming iron – there to heed calls for blood and plunder – and even men of Zhou, mighty Zhou; armed servants of a distant Empress. Iron within and iron without.

Soon enough, forth from these serried ranks strode a familiar sight – a herald. A great, grim beast of a man. To look upon his like was to know a parent’s lie to his children: there was such a thing as monsters. Their ilk was real. Now this monster of a man strode before the walls of Xcotl, the skulls dangling from his belt clack-clack-clacking with every step.

“MEN OF XCOTL!” brayed he; in a voice of no man from women born. A voice made to carry across bone and flesh and sinew. To crawl up a man’s spine and leave him naked before his gods. A hell-call of bloodright birthed.

“YIELD YOURSELVES OR PERISH!”

The House of Enlightenment stands all but ready. Almost. (Labor IV/VII, Wealth 0/VIII, Industry 0/IV)
Ample food. +II Wealth
Xcotl’s scouts bring dark tidings. The foe is on the move!
Try though the men of Xcotl might; no new ant-hounds grace their empty pasture this cycle.
Back home, ant-hounds perish. And dead men rise. To serve and never tire.

+The Obelisk of Healing. -V Wealth, -V Industry
The House of Enlightenment stands ready, save for the wealth and tools to finish it. [Wealth 0/8, Industry 0/IV]
To the wise men of Xcotl come further arcane mysteries: the Method of Channeling. By its mastery, the wildest excess of arcane trauma may be mitigated. Focused. Intensified.

Stromgard
Sufficient food.
Bleak and forlorn are Stromgard’s shores, and though the men of Lordaeron are a hardy lot their lack of even basic accommodations prove a hard burden. To that end, men huddle forlornly around smouldering campfires and whisper of the failure of their leaders.
The huts, meanwhile, rise. Slowly. [Labor 2/3]

Enough food. +II Wealth
To the south and west of fair Fastaqui, the land grows predictably dry. Odd copses of thorny bushes stand sentinel between the silt dunes here. Their humble stems harbour a resin whose scent fogs the mind and cleanses the body. Deposits of a pale, crystallized metal and the odd herd of queer, burrowing creatures - armored in chitin and with no love for man - are also in evidence. The Orleans Folk:
The Folk of Orleans likely smell the Horde before they see it; a vast sea of unwashed humanity sprawled like a great, indolent cat before the fields and farmlands of fair Fergdal. Upon approach, the men of Orleans are descended upon by mounted scouts – lance points gleaming in the summer sun. Questions are barked, and ‘ere long envoys of the Orleans are duly escorted to the Bloodright’s camp. To barter with the Wolf of the Steppe.

The Clan-Marchers:
Brief and to the point are the words of Delisle and Sons. Their directions also. Before year’s end, the Sons of Saladon have a clear and concise way to the lands of Ita. The work of their artisans are less clear, however – but if the making of war bows was as easy as gelding a goat, it would not be a task worth doing. Paid labor, meanwhile, prove scarce in the lands of Serys – not the labor itself, perhaps, so much as the coin to pay for it. Little more than enough to quench a man’s thirst. Thank the gods the men of Serys brew a fine beer. The love a tale too, as it happens – and ‘ere long the Sons of Saladon can count a few more families to their number. Ready for the open road.
Bow-work: [4/6], +100 Peasants

Battle of Sun's Height

The Obelisk of Healing towered over the entire city, over the Grand Walls. It glowed with arcane energy pulsating heat and power. King Votan stared at it admiring its beauty and illuminate, admiring the sense of peace and harmony it gave off. He saw desert birds perch on its peak, bright radiant plumage gracing the blue skies above, they sang the sweetest of melodies that day while below the locusts gathered.

King Votan marched with his elite soldiers armed and armored in gleaming iron, brothers of iron they were muscular and strong from years of training, years of preparing for this very day. Votan was a philosopher at heart and he recognized the irony of today, a warm summers day the last day of Suns Height trees, and plants brimming with life the chirps of birds, and grazing of beasts. How could an event seep in infamy and blood occur on a day such as this? The cruel games Fate played on mankind was enough to make one think till the end of days.

But such pondering could not happen. Votan had sworn a solemn oath to defend the people of Xcotl with his life. He would not dishonor the Ancestors, he would die before Xcotl bent the knee.

And he would die but not today, not to these savages.

The Wizard-King was not like his father Itzcoatl. He stared below from the Grand Walls at the massive army that stood before him, like locusts come to devour fields of maize bare. Such a waste, he saw amongst these savages the Zhou, noble and stout allies of the North. Not long ago they had joined and become one, now they saw each other in battle.

In a voice as mighty and clear as the desert itself he spoke his decree to the Horde.

"Xcotl will not bow, to savages such as yourself, leave now and never return. The Ancestors are disturbed by your presence, leave for they are not as merciful as I am" King Votan stated unfeared and unbowed as those of his people who came before him.

With that, the warriors of Xcotl prepared for the battle of their lifetimes. They marched in unison eager for the crimson tide that was to come, where the fate of Xcotl would be determined.

Decison: Xcotl will remain Unbowed

The Battle of Sun's Height

From the city gates they came, ere the break of day, serried ranks of warriors and shambling corpses driven forward by the will of their masters. In the war-camp of the besiegers great horns blew, rent from strange beasts unnamed, calling soldiers of the Lord of the Earth to battle. Some were already prepared, but other leapt up from slumber, or put aside trenchion and plate with alacrity to take up spear and shield.

Through the city gates they streamed, and as the sun crested the eastern horizon, they formed up ranks and advanced on those who would bedevil them with siege. Hundreds strong, stern warriors of the Chyrsi, resilient long-dead ancestors, tattooed warriors of the Magocracy, they all marched to war. Across the plains their lines coursed, moving forward at speed to trade blows with their foe.

A wind moved on the grasses, and feathered death descended on the attackers. From behind the stakes and crude earthworks of the siege-camp the Midnight Warriors and their innumberable thralls plied bow and arrow, singing demise into sky and cloud to fall in the ranks of the foe. Volley after volley slammed into the hurrying corpses that led the sally of the besieged, and though many shambled onwards with a shaft through arm or leg, some fell boneless, returned to death by too much trauma.

And the distance closed, weapons drawn. Hosts faced each other, and iron blood tinged the air.

54 Undead fallen

Now the attackers came on, and many of those who had plied bows in the ranks of the warriors of the Lord of the Earth unlimbered other weapons, forming a shield wall and holding swords to hand for the clash to come. Behind them others continued to wend their weapons, and their volleys fell in the mortal warriors that followed close behind the shambling undead. An arrow might be turned by armor easily enough, but even those that found simple sinew and bone did more damage than many that had smote the corpse-warriors. Men of the Chyrsi and Xcotl fell, never to move again, well others merely screamed where they lay, healing energies of the mighty Obelisk preserving life in their bodies, an agony unending.

27 Soldiers of Xcotl fall, 12 injured
35 Warriors of the Chyrsi fall, 10 injured

The Honori People
Anxiety.

Image

Whispers whipped through the whispy haze of desert sand like the wild winds of the west. The horizon was a pale grey, the sun seemed ever setting upon the lands of the Honori. The fear began to overtake the city of Mara, swallowing it whole and smothering it in it's endless cloud. Many began to stockpile food. The grain stores were locked and barred- guarded day and night by the most loyal of soldiers. Hands shook with their work, men and women alike broke down, and many a parent woke up in a panicking sweat next to their children, stalked by their own night terrors. Many a clear-headed one swore they saw demons, leaping about from shadow to shadow- a mighty panther just waiting to pounce upon their next victim. True fear like this had never been lived before, until this day. The tears, oh the tears could flood the rivers of the desert vale, the anxiety could paint the sky charcoal black.

But.

The Honori people were never one to abandon all hope. They were never one to give up. They had scraped by a living where nature wished them to die- they mapped the flooding of her lands, they tamed her beasts, and they exhumed her very bones from her tomb, to build to walls as strong as the earth itself. There was not one doubt among Marans, their will would be done. They would survive. And in their fear- a cornered dog becomes twice as vicious. A resounding will to carry on- in the face of looming dread, forced them like the great southerly winds, forward with the will of ten thousand men...

The most divine matriarch stood alone upon her palace terrace- overlooking the city below. The air was still, the wind killed, laid to rest. The sounds of feet- hundreds in number, were the only that could be heard, from across the very city. There they marched, hundreds of them, with tooth and fist, with every fiber of their being- fighting, training, preparing. People of four nations, numbering in the very hundreds, now stood on the precipice of war. Aslani, Ita, Honori, and horde- all now growled with the howling houndish will not seen 'ere before. They polished their swords. They waxed their bow strings. They dressed their wounds. The prepared for the fight of their lives.

This very queen of Mara, so, so many years ago- surrendered her own people to the horde. Sacrificed them like gentle lambs, baby goats, the poor, innocent things- to die! Alone, far away from their homes. For a piece of land or a bit of gold she, nor they would ever see! To be fodder in a war, and many more, with nothing in return. Oh the pain! Oh the sorrow, it ripped through her. The pain- it was too much! In a flury of rage- she ripped from her chest her fine robes of camel hair- tearing it from her brest, and sending it, fluttering, unto the city below. She collapsed. Unto the stone floor, and there, she wept, and spoke thus:

((Adapted from Shakespear's Hamlet, Act 4, Scene 4))
How all occasions do inform against me
And spur my dull revenge! What is a woman
If her chief good and market of his time
Be but to sleep and feed? a beast, no more.
Sure she that made us with such large discourse,
Looking before and after, gave us not
That capability and godlike reason
To fust in us unused. Now, whether it be
Bestial oblivion, or some craven scruple
Of thinking too precisely on the event
A thought which, quartered, hath but one part wisdom
And ever three parts coward; I do not know
Why yet I live to say 'This thing's to do'
Sith I have cause, and will, and strength, and means
To do it. Examples, gross as earth, exhort me:
Witness this army, of such mass and charge,
Led by a delicate and tender prince.
Whose spirit, with divine ambition puffed,
Makes mouths at the invisible event.
Exposing what is mortal and unsure
To all that fortune, death, and danger dare,
Even for an egg-shell. Rightly to be great
Is not to stir without great argument,
But greatly to find quarrel in a straw
When honour's at the stake. How stand I, then,
That have a city humbled, a people enslaved,
Excitements of my reason and my blood,
And let all sleep? While, to my shame, I see
The imminent death of eight hundred men
That, for a fantasy and trick of fame,
Go to their graves like beds — fight for a plot
Whereon the numbers cannot try the cause,
Which is not tomb enough and continent
To hide the slain? O, from this time forth
My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!
