But there's a difference between snipers and designated marksmen. During the time, I think most DMs were still given the standard M1 Garand, except maybe the marines.
Marines were given M1A1 Carbine, and were rarely seen in the Pacific with a M1 Garand. Also, they were given different versions of the Thompson, as well as many other guns.

Just because you give a guy a scoped weapon doesn't make him a sniper. My buddy carried an SR-25 with a scope, but he hadn't gone to Sniper School.
My father actually was a Designated Marksman and carried around a sniper rifle with him on most missions. (Exact gun? I don't know, he didn't talk about it much. Which, he has every right not to)
