Mister Speaker, I just left a teleconference call with some constituents and I updated them about the rot that's being passed off as policy in this hall this afternoon. I asked each and every one of them, businesspeople, successful people of Banduria, how do you make good citizens out of your children? do you give them a cookie and tell them not to do it again? Or do you use your position as the parent to make sure that they never do that again? It is not surprising the answer I received.

Mister Speaker, it would behoove my colleagues to go speak to our people (observing social distance of course), and ask them what should the state do with criminals. Guess what they say? ARREST THEM *Xie Jia Ju slaps the back of the seat in front of her as she says this*

It's as simple as this. Some members of this chamber want to reward criminals, and Bandurians wants to recompensate victims.

Mister Speaker, please acknowledge the irony of the MP wanting to restore order, while at the same time, sending a message that this government will be weak on fighting crime.

We should agree that Bandurians don't want to spend their ever-tightening hard-earned money on criminals, let's agree to table this discussion and move on to another bill that will help make Banduria strong.

"Populism and far right lies! Firstly, no criminals are released. Whoever is sentenced shall fully serve their sentence in prison. Secondly, the bill only affects young, first time offenders convicted of lite offenses only. Thirdly, the bill aims to ensure that once they are released from prison - after fully serving their sentence - they will not relapse to their old ways, but rather shall have the necessary skills to find a job and become law-abiding, productive members of society. Instead of turning them into hardened criminals, we can turn them into lawful citizens paying back society by contributing as lawful workers. Your populist sloganeering has no relation to reality."

"Mr. Speaker, I do not believe it is the chair's prerogative to 'acknowledge' any irony that is perceived by the gentlewoman from across the aisle. Mr. Speaker, I obviously cannot speak for my Honorable colleague who sponsored and introduced this legislation to the floor, but I imagine that I can speak for most on the Government benches, and perhaps even a healthy number among the Opposition, that we have no intention to table this bill to sate her hot headed attitude and stunts. We are here to govern, Mr. Speaker, not be dictated to by one Member of Parliament who overestimates her clout both among the esteemed Opposition benches and within the wider House."

Esteemed Mister Speaker, I agree with the MP that went before me. Every moment that we spend debating over how much money to give to Banduria's future criminals and delinquents, is a moment that we lose strengthening our economy, our infrastructure, and dealing with the current pandemic. My constituents didn't need to go to Stanford or Oxford in order to understand the carrot and the stick.

Skeckoa wrote: Hello Speaker, it seems like this chamber reeks of backwardness and people bent on creating chaos and disorder for our citizens in order to satisfy their ideology. What they are proposing is paying with school, slapping them on the wrist, and sending them back out to go commit another crime. Heck, you commit another crime they might start paying for the Doctorates! Paid for by sticking up innocent women in the parks. Ludicrous is paying the criminal for committing a crime, instead of recompensating the victim handsomely for our failure to maintain law and order.

Mister Speaker, point of order, "hello speaker" is a wholly innapropiate way of addressing you.

"Mr. Sri, I ask you again to withhold from making such trivial objections."

The Speaker clears his throat. "I'm glad to see such a... lively debate mark this house. Voting will now commence on three bills, and last for twenty four hours. In relation to the complaint leveled by Ms. Cheung, I will add the Linguistic Status Act to the queue, to begin discussion on May 11th."

Here's the ballot (please answer AYE/NO/ABSTAIN):

A staffer nervously enters the parliamentary chamber and approaches the serjeant-at-arms. He asks the man to deliver to the speaker in private and with no indication of shock or surprise whatsoever. The man reads the note and his eyes widen for a second. He turns away from the staffer and hands the note over to the speaker.

URGENT

Secretary Hubert Aarts has collapsed on the streets outside the parliament building. He was rushed to Boschstad National Hospital but unfortunately he has passed away due to a brain aneurysm. This is the speaker's official notice of the death of an MP and government cabinet member. Should the speaker like to receive additional information please contact the hospital.
