Thanks. I will think on this app but you can come up with a name for this political ideal if you want. Also the uniform is a bit too far off for this setting. Renaissance and Baroque eras uniforms could work.

The early modern era would be a good analogue as to what this setting would resemble with our world right now.

It would probably be more akin to Jacobinism than Marxist Socialism.

Character Application
Character Name:
Sovadien Ardariach Tholondíl, 7th Tholondíl Earl of Calthán

Gender:
Male

Appearance:
An older gentleman with a glint in his eye and a fabulous sense of style and decorum, both of which would appear to be poor skills for one out in the Shadowlands. While more recently not dressed in the finest clothes of the age, now preferring something more akin to the journeying clothing worthy of a cartographer, that which he does wear is kept most definitely kept both clean and to the highest levels of formality. Possessing a magnificent moustache, wearing a pair of spectacles for reading, and often seen in his trademark cocked hat, he looks somewhat ill-fitting for the most vile corner of the planet. However, behind the spectacle of an inapposite gentleman lie eyes reflecting a sharp mind, and a physique which allows this gentleman to remain at the peak of his ability.

Personality:
In a word, eccentric. In three, incomprehensible but smart. The Earl Tholondíl has always possessed a love for socialisation, discussion, formal situations and learning, a combination which had suited him well in his homeland of Tór Galiech. He had always possessed a love of adventure and the stories of their adventurers, and had always wanted to be able to tell his own. Indeed, at the age of 55, he has indeed accrued a great number of stories of his own to tell. Kindly, friendly, and somewhat opposed to the rigid nobility of his homeland, but very much a product of it, with parties of all kinds being particular loves of his, and while discomfort is not a stranger to him, he has an immense appreciation for the finer things. And yet, with all of his kindness and decency, he sometimes betrays a history of loss, trauma and sadness.

Age:
55

Occupation:
Middle nobility, adventurer, socialite, former military officer.

Likes:
Socialisation, decorum, formality, wit, learning, adventuring, tea.

Dislikes:
The nobility, bigotry, deception, political manoeuvring.

Skills:
  • Fighting: As a former officer in the army of Tór Galiech, and with the ongoing experience in various adventures, Sovadien knows not only how to handle himself, but arguably far more than that, posing a true threat to those who oppose him. He is particularly proficient at bladework - fighting with various kinds of swords - but also can handle certain guns fairly well.
  • Tactical knowledge: Again, partially thanks to his experience in the military, he is a skilled tactician. However, for reasons found below, he has a tendency to be somewhat cautious.
  • Socialisation: Perhaps his most well-known skill is in the art of socialisation. Sovadien is an avid socialite who, when in his homeland, hosts a great many parties and events.
  • Scouting, tracking, orienteering and cartography: Just generally skilled in the arts of geography, and with his mind at the forefront of current scientific knowledge on geographic features, Sovadien has added a great number of these skills to his adventuring repertoire.
Magecraft: N/A

Items:
  • A Tór Galiean nobleman's rapier, made of steel.
  • An intricately decorated pistol.
  • A box of exotic teas, alongside a small kettle and some cups.
  • Spectacles (to read)
  • Cartographic and orienteering equipment (incl. reams of paper, compasses, pencils, quills etc.).
Sexual preference
Homosexual

Identifying features
Just the generally ill-fitting manner in which he struts around the Shadowlands, a gentleman in a hostile land.

Bio
Sovadien Ardariach Tholondíl was never supposed to be Earl of Calthán. He was the sixth son, eighth child in all, of his father, Thuordian Tholondíl, the 5th Earl of Calthán. But despite his father in many ways being a hard taskmaster toward all of his children, Sovadien could not help but feel that the brunt of his father's ire, which could be considerable, came down on him. Instances such as his father scolding him for the most minor offences, dashing his early fantasies of finding adventure and excitement, and never truly spending the time in getting to know his son, added to this sense. Despite this, thanks to still being within an affluent and somewhat powerful family, albeit with their power waning within the Kingdom of Tór Galiech, he was provided with an excellent education from the get-go.

It soon became clear, being so far behind in the line of succession, with five elder brothers before him to ascend to the Earldom, that Sovadien's life would likely be embroiled in martial pursuits. Each of his elder brothers had taken some form of martial training, but Sovadien's was perhaps the most comprehensive. Yes, all of the children were expected to gain commissioned ranks in the army should war break out, but the elder Thuordian Tholondíl had wished for his children to be known for their intellectual pursuits moreso. Sovadien, reasoned the Earl, would not ever reach those heights of intellectual pursuit, and so would be forced into serving his country, regardless of his personal wishes.

And so Sovadien joined the military academy. He was soon found to be well above the standards of most of his peers, and as such, joined a prestigious and storied society within the academy known as the Rapier Clique. The Clique was not a secret organisation, per se, more just a social gathering of boys from the academy whose high results would place them on a course towards future, bright military careers. Sovadien found in the Rapier Clique a society who appreciated him for his achievements, and he was assured that a place in the Clique would bring him command of his own company in a year of service, command of a regiment in three, and, if needs were met and a high standard of excellence maintained, the rank of General or Field Marshal in less than ten.

However, academic excellence was not all which Sovadien found within the Rapier Clique. He quickly hit it off with another cadet in the Clique, the son of a minor trader, named Tuillien Vaesís. As it turned out, the two became more than just friends. Sovadien and Tuillien spent every moment together, as often as they could, and their relationship continued to grow. Now, common law within the Kingdom of Tór Galiech prohibited homosexual relationships, but it was not unknown, or at least not very well hidden, that members of the Rapier Clique would overlook some indiscretions and contraventions of the law in the name of excellence. And so, while Sovadien and Tuillien's relationship was not open by any means, within the Clique, it was somewhat of an open secret.

The time for Sovadien's graduation neared, and Sovadien and Tuillien both went to Calthán, Sovadien's ancestral home, prior to this. Tuillien was set to graduate later in the year, but Tuillien had organised to take time away to be with Sovadien in his own graduation, and the academy, with a few well-placed bribes by the Rapier Clique, accepted this. However, the closeness of Tuillien to Sovadien concerned the elder Earl of Calthán. As such, he did some investigation, and soon did discover that Tuillien and Sovadien were lovers. One evening, Thuordian stormed into their bedchamber, dragging Tuillien out of their room and throwing him onto the gravel path leading up to Tholondíl House, right into the hands of waiting Justiciars, the royal law-enforcement, to be taken away and suitably punished. Meanwhile Thuordian turned around and punished his son personally.

Sovadien did graduate, but Tuillien was expelled from the academy. Additionally, Sovadien's contacts within the Rapier Clique no longer served him as he was promised they would. Even if he was now an officer of the army, his reputation had somewhat followed him into it. As such, he fell squarely in the middle of the road, not excelling, not being left behind. Sovadien's lack of exemplary service here was due somewhat to the grief he felt over his lover. While he wrote some letters to him, there was no way to know if he had received them, or if he would respond. Sovadien lost all contact with Tuillien in this time.

But there soon came to be greater concerns within the Kingdom. A small border skirmish between Tór Galiech and another nearby power led to war, and Sovadien's five brothers were sent into the army. Sovadien didn't know if his father had a hand in his eldest brother being placed, in the rank of Major General, in command of the division above him, but regardless, Major General Ysilien Tholondíl became Sovadien's higher commanding officer. The young Major General's lack of battlefield, or even theoretical, experience was plain to see. Ysilien committed blunder after blunder, culminating in the Battle of Tavan.

The battle saw Ysilien and another brother of Sovadien's, Cagrósien, face a single enemy army, larger than either of theirs but smaller than both combined. Cagrósien suggested that Ysilien's army, comprised of lighter troops, flanked the enemy while Cagrósien's army of heavier troops engaged in a frontal attack. However, Ysilien craved the glory of a frontal assault. The two brothers bitterly argued, losing valuable time as well as sending out a number of incoherent orders. Eventually, Ysilien agreed to flank the enemy, but by that point the enemy army's position was no longer able to be flanked as easily, and so Sovadien's troop had to march through rough terrain, under constant fire, at a disadvantage. However, as they left the rough terrain, not only had the army moved again to a further point, but it became worse for Sovadien's army, as the full force of the enemy artillery came down upon them, picking them off as they emerged from the relative defence of the terrain. Cagrósien would be killed by a stray musket ball in the battle, but Ysilien would survive it. The experience, with Sovadien losing most of his troop, scarred him for life. Apart from receiving some wounds during the battle, Sovadien was mainly affected by the horror of it. As soon as the war had ended, a tactical but largely inconsequential defeat, save for the human cost, Sovadien tendered his resignation. For one last time, his contacts in the Rapier Clique helped him in that manner, and he was discharged from the army.

Sovadien moved to the capital of Tór Galiech, Cónalarn, ostensibly to set himself up in minor employment, but mainly he wished to see if he could get into contact with Tuillien once more. Though he had found a small trading family known as Vaesís, he was uncertain if that was the one to which Tuillien belonged. And even if it was, Sovadien was unsure if Tuillien would want to see him, with years having passed and Tuillien having returned none of Sovadien's letters. However, even with meagre funds, Sovadien soon became an avid socialite, and became invited to a number of major parties and events within the capital. Indeed, the skills of socialisation and formality that Sovadien learned in both the Rapier Clique and the academy as a whole served him well in this manner, and Sovadien became a celebrated name, and a must-have of any party scene. He had largely forgotten about his own family, no love lost between him and them, until he received a letter from them. Sovadien's father had died, and Ysilien was now the next Earl of Calthán. Sovadien would attend the funeral, but shared little communication with them either way. Ysilien petitioned Sovadien to return home, but Sovadien stated plainly that he only had poor memories of Calthán - it was not his true home.

Feeling freed from the constraints of his home, and with a customary inheritance from his father, Sovadien decided that he ought to make good on childhood fantasies. He wanted to explore, adventure and be celebrated as more than just a socialite. Indeed, finding a great many wild lands to explore, including the wastelands of Chemdah and far across the seas. He would return periodically, often to great fanfare within Cónalarn, and people would listen to the stories of his adventures. Eventually, he came to write down stories of his travels, to the readership of many. However, his hope was always that Tuillien would read his memoirs and respond. It soon became apparent that this was not the case. Sovadien soon gave up hope.

While journeying in a far-distant land, he received word from members of his household in Calthán. A plague had wiped through the lands of Calthán in the preceding year, and two of Sovadien's brothers and one of his sisters had died then and there. Furthermore, Ysilien, after nearly a decade of mismanagement and countless military blunders in that long-past conflict, was assassinated by a veteran of that conflict who had lost nearly everything, seemingly due to Ysilien. As such, Sovadien was now officially Earl, though he did not want the title. He returned to Calthán. Duty demanded that he take the title, though it did not make it any easier to accept.

However, with his new title, Sovadien began to put some feelers out to see if he could locate his lost love Tuillien. Through some long-past information, Sovadien heard a rumour that a trader called Tuillien V. had gone to the Shadowlands years prior. Sovadien was interested; he had never been to the Shadowlands, one of the few places he had yet to go, and he was always wanting to search for Tuillien. And so, with a small amount of notice to those within Tór Galiech and an even smaller amount of preparation, Sovadien embarked on his quest to the Shadowlands.

(Writing this at 6am after a night shift, so I think I kinda lost track of the writing thread at the very end there, but hopefully it still stacks up.)

Theme Song
Here

Reason:
Officially: wanderlust and exploration, two mainstays of Sovadien's character.
Unofficially: the search for a lost lover, and an escape from the entrenched nobility of his homeland. It isn't quite clear, even to Sovadien himself, if he intends to return to Calthán. Even if he fails in finding lost love, he might well feel the call to adventure too strongly to ever leave again.

Indeed, he soon courted another man, Sovarcheil of Róesthi, though while still illegal, it was not quite the same lovestruck endeavour that Sovadien had embarked on with Tuillien.

While journeying in a far-distant land, he received word from members of his household in Calthán. A plague had wiped through the lands of Calthán in the preceding year, and three of Sovadien's brothers and one of his sisters had died then and there.

Thanks. I will think on this app but you can come up with a name for this political ideal if you want. Also the uniform is a bit too far off for this setting.

Will do! In the meantime, i'll be searching for some fitting clothes.

Right after some deliberation I will have to say that communism as you have planned out won't work in here. Communism came as a result of several political and philosophical ideas that have not yet taken root in this world and it grew during the height of industrialization. In this world there are open air ateliers that act like proto-factoirs for alchemical concoctions and magical foci but they are still mainly driven by live workers (natural and artificial), chemical feeds, and magic rituals. Perhaps some clockwork automation is used but for the most part steam engines haven't reached ubiquitous use yet.

The setting is predominantly clockpunk with magitech heavily mixed in with steampunk tech being in it's early phases. Right now the world isn't at the stage for communist ideals to spurt. That's something for the future.

Glad Brit got that one while I was gone because I was gonna accept it too. The app gets points for the use of Treasure Planet music.

Ah, a cultured individual I see! Yeah, I've always loved Treasure Planet, and that mix of early modern aesthetic and fantastical adventure presented in the music made it perfect for a theme.

Hopefully this RP will be memorable as Treasure Planet. I just need a few more before I make the Discord and maybe the IC. But until then I want to ask you all this.

You all want to start in the Shadowlands at the start or be in a town or city first to have a taste of civilization before venturing into the Shadowlands?

I personally wouldn't mind either, but I suppose it depends on how much of a cohesive party we are to be at the beginning. If we're to be a very cohesive unit, then meeting outside the Shadowlands would likely be our best bet.

I think I prefer the Town idea.

You can make him a Jacobinist instead? A revolutionary supporting ideals of a republic?

Aye that seems good. I assume that it wouldn't be straight up called Jacobinism or anything like that, right?
