Fayne Freewynne

Dragos Bee wrote:Raven was racing to the hangar bay as well, having decided, on impulse, to back up Fayne as she communicated her position near the blast doors. He knew this was the gateway to greater intrigues, but he felt some affinity for these survivors. That, and these newcomers were potential enemies not just to them, but also to the original crew of salvagers that he belonged to. Speaking of which, what was Captain Ash doing? Had something happened to him? Either way, holding out his trusty Anti-Materiel Rifle, which would be a primitive ballistics one if he had not been permitted access to the Dido's armory in the interim, he said to Fayne, "I'm backing you up."

Fayne's softly glowing eyes stayed fixed on the ramp as she half turned her head towards Nevets' as he setup in position. She'd have preferred Dido crew, marines, but someone was better than being alone. It didn't really go any distance towards evening the odds, not even a little.

She felt a little silly about how much better it felt.

Fayne gave Nevetz a short nod, the one she reserved for those who showed up - possibly - just to die with her.

"If anything happens, we don't shoot - we make sure this door gets closed and wait for backup." Fayne's voice was soothingly calm, she might as well have been asking about someone's feelings. But the calm there belied the tension she felt.

I hope these fuckers decide to talk

While the rest of the crew decided what to do, Sathia went to the medical bay, laid out her instruments and waited. There would, she assumed, be blaster injuries in the not so distant future. She took a few moments to check the machines were in working order. They had oxygen. They had blood to hand in the fridges (even a little synthetic berdikon blood) though she did acknowledge that if someone got close enough to plug her with a blaster it was probably curtains anyway...

She checked her instruments again. Then sat down and waited. She hated the waiting.

As a good nurse did, Vi tailed Sathia, and stuck close by her side as the situation evolved. But as the minutes ticked by, it occurred to her the exact state of the crew—the sheer scarcity of people to man different points across the ship was really stunningly severe. And then, as she looked around the Medbay, she realized that two of the seven Federation members were standing here, just waiting, idly, with nothing else to do.

“Sathia,” Vi queried, “Do you think you will need help out here, or do you think it would be better for me to try to supplement our security?”

After waiting for a response, and not receiving any, the second ship tried again, "Is that the 'Fleeting Horizon'? Having comms trouble?" the speaker asked, "You guys still running with Ash Pyrrhus? If so, tell him it's Corvin White here."

Caeni, who had been standing around while they waited for the Captains to decide what to do, looked between the two of them, "Well I'm happy to talk to them," she suggested, looking between the two Captains.

"Stay here for now. If more than one person comes in I'll need a hand and I also can't afford to lose the only other trained medical officer," Sathia sighed then sat down on the edge of one of the operating tables, "Though maybe you can see if you can patch us into the comms system. I hate being in the dark at times like this."

Captain Ash Pyrrhus

Ash had been about to flip his visor down when the familiar voice stopped him in his tracks. The name was unfamiliar; but then again the man on the other end had never called him by his new name either before today.

Back when Ash had known the man; their identities were just numbers and letters. Serialized gear for the Concordian war machine. KY-928-AH and KY-928-CV.

Crèche mates, then classmates, finally sailors. The last Ash had seen of his friend, he had been a fighter pilot off of the Concordian carrier Argonaut. Presumed lost with all hands just before that fateful operation.

Ash wasn’t sure how he knew his new alias or even where to find him. He wasn’t even sure if this was real; only Caeni’s and Marshall’s expectant looks convinced him this is somewhat not in his head. He toggled the comms.

“Corvin” The name was unfamiliar on his tongue. But he continued on. “I thought you were dead….”

He left out how most of their old crèche mates and comrades were dead. So his death would have been nothing special.

Marshal Sharp

The captain of the Dido intently scanned Ash's expression, his own eyes widening at the mention of the scavenger captain by name. It appeared that these two men knew each other; he guessed that they were comrades in arms, or just someone that Ash knew well, based on how... mortified Ash seemed to appear at the man's voice and his name. And, well, it looks like Ash's friend had returned from the dead. Or the news of his death had been exaggerrated.

"Friend of his?" Marshal turned to Caeni, deciding not to interrupt the reunion between the two other captains.

"Rumours of my death have been much exagerated," Corvin called back with a slight chuckle, "Are you alright with us coming aboard? I know you're conducting salvage here but this hulk is huge. We'd be happy to help out. May we come aboard without being shot?"

Caeni started shaking her head, then shrugged instead, "I don't know. I've never heard of him, though it probably means I'm not needed at the moment."

“Stay put. I’ll come welcome you aboard.” Ash toggled off the comms and glanced at his old and new companion. “Long story.”

To Caeni it was a familiar excuse; one Ash offered anytime his skills or history came up. It was something his crew would be used to by now. Or at least should be used to it.

Ash didn’t offer any more as he pulled his breather back on and affixed his visor back into its slot. Though he did toggle his comms again. This time to the ad hoc network the scavengers and the popsicles used as a general network.

“I need a few security types to meet me by the docking bay. Keep your guns down but be careful. Just in case.” He didn’t offer anymore once again as he began the trek to the cargo bay

Sathia, Ilusha, Vi, Orlenn
Cowritten by Dyelli Beybi, Nachfolgia, Khasinoka, Bingellia

Where the team in the medical bay gossip a little and wonder if they can trust the scavengers.

The medical bay was well lit, pristine, and laid out like the crew were expecting a massive influx of patients. Scalpers lay on mobile units alongside operating beds in neat little lines... but aside from the two medical staff the room was empty.

Berdikons were not a patient species by nature and Sathia has started to pace the length of the floor, wringing her green hands distractedly, "I wish someone would tell us what's going on out there," she grumbled to Vi, "This long pause worries me."

Ilusha had remained quiet for the most part. She was still trying to process the fact that she could be the last of her species and she was failing. She couldn't stop crying ever since the news dropped, even when she was consumed by work. There was still a lot to do on Ilusha's end to get the ship running again. What would normally take dozens of engineers, it was all done by her and whoever she could get to help. Honestly it was all overwhelming and Ilusha was emotionally drained. She needed to be check on, something that had been done in hundreds of years. Ilusha, sullen and looking down at the floor, walking into the medical bay. She didn't say anything to the medical staff and took a seat in a chair. Ilusha looked worn down and had a thousand yard stare.

Vi had been seated on the floor, watching her superior pace anxiously with a blank stare. It was clear that this latest comment required some kind of response, but the right tone hadn’t become evident to her yet. As the Gorial engineer entered the room, a string of words came to her. “It does not appear that she has been told either,” Vi noted, pointing to Ilusha.

Orlenn followed the Gorialax through the medbay doors. The blond Kiel unslung his carbine from his shoulder before finding his own seat and laying the blaster on its butt beside his leg. He glanced over to Vi, rubbed his temples, and sighed in frustration, "My guess is that it's another damned Scav ship, but the fact that they're not shooting yet is good at least. Probably operates in the same areas as the Fleeting Horizon given they found us, so maybe they know each other. It is more hands to strip, sell, and restore if they sell them on the idea"

Sathia stopped pacing, pursing her lips thoughtfully, "Though really, what do we know about these scavengers? There is the enthusiastic jokarun who wants to study us, the one who wants us to conquer the galaxy for him and the epicurian dhasath. We don't know them that well. Their Captain goes down to a planet and suddenly we get a visit from some more? Who's to say they aren't planning to take over?"

Ilusha, upon hearing all this, put her hands over her ears and closed her eyes. " It'll be a massacre all over again. "

Orlenn glanced over to Illusha, then to Saitha. "What’s our stock of mild painkillers like, Doc?," he asked bluntly. "Besides," he continued on, " if they wanted us dead, punching a few new holes in the hull would be easier than storming the ship."

"Not if you want the ship intact," Sathia pointed out, "They're pretty starry eyed about some of the tech..." she sighed, returning to the question, "We have stock of mild painkillers to last a good five years."

" They could kill us and take the tech. Our Skim Drive alone is worth more 10 of their ships." Ilusha chimed in.

"But would they be so foolish to ignore the potential for monopolizing our technology?" Vi countered, "They have an archaeologist, right? If nobody else does, he will know better than to sell our ship for scrap."

"Are you saying these people wouldn't favour short term gain over long term profit?" Sathia seemed half-convinced by the argument despite her protestation, "I would still keep an eye on them. We don't know them all that well."

Ilusha looked to Sathia. " What if the two of us gets put in a museum or something?"

"Cloning technology," Vi noted, "They could make genetically identical copies of you and mass-produce—actually, what if we sold some of your genetic material? Museums across the galaxy would kill for the ability to analyse living copies of your cells."

" I...I don't know how I feel about that." Ilusha said, holding herself tightly.

"Nobody is cloning me," Sathia declared in a tone that suggested she wasn't going to budge on that point.

"Given that they are treating our tech like a gold mine,"Orlenn scoffed, "I wouldn't bet on cloning tech being up to par, "More importantly," he turned his attention to Sathia, "What is the actual game here. Our game, besides our Acting Captain's orders to try to defend the ship if these new scavs are hostile. Federation Ships can run on a skeleton crew, but this is a battleship, and there's about a dozen of us with our scavs. It's bad enough keeping what we have functioning, let alone repairing what isn't."

Sathia gave Orlenn a despairing shrug, "I'm just the Doctor... but if I had my way I'd be using this ship to try to find a Berdikon or Gorialax settlement. That child said we're extinct but I refuse to believe that. We'd need money, but if this is such a great ship is comparison to what they have I'd fund it by selling some non essential bits, like the stasis pods, hiring some locals to help crew the thing then hiring ourselves out as mercenaries."

“We can always outrun them once we’re fixed up,” Vi suggested.

"Every local tyrant with a deep purse is going to want our services, and I imagine they won't be too happy if we say no," Orlenn replied, cocking an eyebrow at the doctor. "Are you going to be okay with that, Doctor?"

"If it gets me to my people," Sathia nodded, "Yes. Sometimes the ends justify the means."

"I hate to admit it, but the rube might have a point," Orlenn shrugged. "I wouldn't sell our morals before knowing if there's even hope in the first place."

"There's always hope until you verify otherwise," Sathia countered, "what was his point again? Something about using this ship to make a new Federation?"

"Alright, maybe the rube doesn't have a point then," Orlenn conceded.

" The Captain must have our best interests in mind, right? Maybe a new Federation is our only hope to survive out here." Ilusha asked, still unsure of everything.

Meanwhile at the Docks...

Corvin was agood 6 feet tall, muscular in a wiry sort of way, with a big square jaw and shock of blonde hair crowning his weathered features, all visible through the mask of his spacesuit, "Ash," he spread his arms wide, "Good to see you old boy. So this is your claim is it?"

He didn't wait for a response, motioning at a couple of his crew who were wrestling with a large crate, "We have some gifts for you. Fresh limes and a whole lot of beer from Xorrus VII. Figured you and your crew could do with some refreshments. Wow, this is quite the find isn't it!"

Captain Ash Pyrrhus

Ash felt a few conflicting emotions at the sight of his old friend. Joy that a lost friend had returned; but also suspicion at the confidence of it happening in the literal find of a century.

Ash took stock of Corvin’s crew, who like their captain, were clad in well used Concordian boarding armor that Ash himself sported. Though their color scheme was an odd black with sudbued bolts of yellow zigzagging over the surfaces. They also sported carbines and varieties of boarding melee weapons that were ubiquitous among space born mercs.

“Haven’t heard any sign of you for years Corvin. And you show up knowing my name right after I find…. This….” Ash gestured around them at the ship. He cut a glance back at his grind as he popped his visor and pulled his breather mask away. “What’s really happening brother……”

He spared a glance around them before he take a step closer and lowered his voice to a whisper.

“Crechemate to crechmate.”

"Crèche mate to crèche mate?" Corvin asked, more for dramatic effect than anything else, "Ash, you didn't think you were the only one who heard rumours about an old Federation hulk floating out this way? Actually, I'm surprised I'm the only other person you've found looking for this old wreck! Half the contractors in this sector are looking for their 'El Dorado' payout!"

Caeni had, in fact, heard those rumours...

"We had been searching separately - us and our runabout. They spotted your ship coming in and scarpered, imagining you were going to open fire to defend your prize, then rendezvoused back with us to tell us that they had had a close encounter with the Fleeting Horizon by the wreck," Corvin continued jovially, "And I figured you wouldn't shoot me out of the sky, not if I told you who I was, though I have to admit I was initially a bit worried by the silence over comms."

“I thought you died during Operation Grail. Then the we hit their shipyards…..” Ash trailed off as he fixed Corvin with a now curious glance. “….that was years ago. And the moment I found the jackpot of all salvage operations you come with gifts and….”

Understanding seemed to dawn on Ash’s face as he took in Corvin’s armor and that of his crew. Their forms and features hidden beneath their plating but their shape and height marked them as Concordians.

There was no way a dead Corvin could have secured that much armor and pure Concordian warriors in the aftermath of the war when Ash; with hundreds of still living crew. Barely scraped a few sets of armor and no crew.

But if he had backing…..

“The remnants….. Your still with the Ascendancy….”

Raven Nevets

Raven, and probably Fayne, were where the Captain was meeting with his 'old friend', and Raven at least stood some paces back, close to where some old crates were stored near the blast doors - A good source of cover, considering what was occurring right before his eyes.

Heavily armed soldiers bearing gifts, armed in the same armor Captain Ash sported, but more polished and less dented, and more than a match for the combined crews of the salvagers and the survivors. And Raven knew enough that Corvin was causing Captain Ash notable distress; he and the Captain had their disagreements, but Raven trusted the latter's instinct for danger - If anyone can distress him, then they must be an enemy... One that must be dealt with through guile when brute strength was lacking.

Or, as the Fed remnants don't care for building a new Federation or even helping me free my family, I could try and get these new guys' help instead... No. The Preferton Phoenixes will not resort to such petty betrayal, and I, plus Andrew, are their last battle-ready people - That makes me their current Colonel.

He pursed his lips, waiting for orders from the Captain if the latter was not distracted by his heart-to-heart talk with his former creche-mate, whom he was beginning to dislike immensely. Either way, Raven had his Anti-Materiel Gun out and about, and while he, being a salvager, was not as well-armored as Fayne, he had a helmet as well as a repurposed spacesuit jury-rigged to fit a bit of armor plating and a shield generator; these ought to take a few shots in a firefight. Glancing at Fayne for a second before looking at Captain Ash again, Raven whispered into his helmet, which had an in-built communications device in it for obvious reasons, "Turn on private encryption. Send a direct message to the Dido's communications networks."

He needed to send a message to the other Captain, and if this message was accepted, the Survivors, including Fayne through the latter's helmet - If they had one - Would hear him whisper.

"I know the Captain well enough to know that this causes him distress, whether this man is an 'old friend' or not. Prepare for negotiations to break down. Also, Caeni, are you here? If so, prepare to rally who we have left - I rarely use the 'I have military experience' card, so you know this is serious - for either deception or a fight."

He knew that 'Corvin' was walking a thin line, that this man would not be able to count on his old friendship with Captain Ash much longer if such a friendship had survived their mysterious past that no one of the crew knew about. That Captain Ash would not stand by and let his hospitality be abused, especially on a ship that was not his own anyway. And while Raven had gotten flak for making assumptions before, in this case, in this specific case, all he had to do was wait for the situation to keep going downhill.

I just need to count on my Captain's distress to lead him to refuse, and his 'old friend' to take the refusal badly,, Raven thought. My old Colonel would be mad that I took advantage of my new commanding officer's emotionally distressed state, but he's dead and I have to rescue his children. So I wait and hope that this is not merely wishful thinking.
Sorry for my behavior, P2TM.

"Remnant what?" Corvin asked. Paused a moment before shaking his head despairingly, "No. I'm not with any holdout group who don't know when a war is over. Operation Grail should serve as a reminder of why you shouldn't fight wars for other people and their causes. When I fight these days, I fight for me, my crew and the money it puts in our pockets.

"Now, you've expressed surprised that I've turned up at this wreck. I'm guessing you don't realise then that every scavenger this side of Tellotian space is looking for this hulk... where did you hear about it?" he asked curiously.

"Old guy at a bar," Caeni piped up, glancing in Raven's direction and giving him a slight shake of the head as she inserted herself into the conversation, "I didn't realise it had got around."

"Well it has," Corvin replied, "The 'old guy' had some vids of the hulk. Got everyone itching to find it and see what treasures were aboard.

"So," he said, addressing Ash again, "Can we come aboard Captain? We bring gifts and from what I can see there's more than enough ship to go around!"

Marshal Sharp

All this time, Marshal had been listening on to the conversation in the hangar bay, assessing whether this Corvin character could be trusted.

The fact that Corvin was able to waltz in with his ship was criminal, but that was just the Dido's lack of working sensors, and the general unrepaired state of the bridge getting in the way of operating the vessel. And, really, there wasn't much they could do to stop it from entering. If the guns were working, hell, even just one cannon that could be pointed at them could have been good enough. And yet, it seems that they have a long way to go.

How annoying.

At least, however, the internal comms system was already operational. Marshal appeared in one of the windows that overlooked the hangar, looking down upon the gathered folk. "You'll have to ask us first," he began, speaking with an air of unerring authority. "Captain Marshal Sharp of the Federation battleship Dido. Yes, I'm about a thousand years old, alongside the rest of us. Yes, we woke up from stasis. And uh, captain Ash and I currently have a signed contract that stipulates benefits for both parties in regards to this ancient ship, but... we can accommodate amendments. I am sure we can reach something that would make every one of us happy, no? As you have said... there is more than enough ship to go around."

Captain Ash Pyrrhus

Ash was mulling over Corvin’s latest information and its possibilities; as well as his latest offer.

Then Marshall spoke up, blaring his voice over the intercoms so no one could mistake the message. Corvin glanced now between Ash and Marshall; his eyes calculating in a way that Ash had often seen but never been on the receiving end of.

Before Corvin had been negotiating with an old comrade over a valuable wreck. Lucrative even with the probable half and half split that would have occurred. But now….. Marshall had revealed the crew had survived and weren’t giving up their boat to salvage.

That cut into the potential payday…..big time.

“Corvin…… this is a big ship. Lots to make a profit on.” Ash offered as he surreptitiously brought up his HUD’s combat software.

Fayne Freewynne

- Hangar Bay

Fayne remained low and still behind the protective barrier offered by the wall next to the open hangar bay blast door. The boarding ramp to Corvine's shuttle was sighted in on the blaster carbine she'd taken from the armoury, the catch set to fully automatic. She listened over comms to what was being said. Following the conversation. But it was Marshal's voice she was most listening for.

Deep breath in. Deep breath out.

There was no daring taking her eyes off the ramp even as Nevets spoke.

Dragos Bee wrote:Raven Nevets

Fayne's concentration was such that she didn't respond in words, her attention was focussed on the boarding ramp, though she clicked her mic in response to Nevets' communique, a brief crackle of static indicating she'd heard what he'd said.

"Nevets seems to know something about these guys... says to be ready." She says quietly over the comms. They'd just been boarded, she'd hope everyone was already taking this seriously.

I hope he's wrong...

Nevets seemed both confident and on edge about it though, in a way Fayne found unsettling. The tension of listening to all this, unable to do anything but wait.

Deep breath in. Deep breath out

Fayne slides herself carefully into a more comfortable, prone firing position trying to keep her sights trained on the ramp even as she slides slowly to a more comfortable, more stable prone firing position, studying the ramp closely for any signs of Corvine's people trying to peak out at them.

Fayne clenches her hand slowly, slowly releasing it, trying to banish the slight tremors she feels in them.

Remember to breathe

Into the tense stillness pervasive in the hangar bay Fayne, still not looking over at the person holding the opposite side of the hangar door, speaks without the comms. "It was Raven, wasn't it?"

Corvin looked from Marshall to Ash then back again..
Then burst out laughing, "Surviving crew," he snorted, "Good one."

The mirth didn't last long though, "Look, Ash, I'm not an idiot, I can see you have people surrounding us and you're all really on edge. I'm trying to be friendly but you're making me nervous. If it was someone else we'd have come in weapons hot - but I figured we could work together. I'm not overly keen on getting shot, or shooting you for that matter, so how about we go back to our ship, you take whatever it is you think I'm going to steal from you, then we have a go after you're done? Sound fair?"

Raven nodded, saying to the Counselor (?), "Yes. Raven Nevets, one of the many Dhasath-blooded descendants of Thanica the Younger, daughter of Alexander Nevets from ancient legends - Then again, there are so many descendants of her even in this dark day and age. So, it seems the situation might be defused soon. Or are things going to escalate again?"

I was too eager to go behind Captain Ash's back, thinking I knew better. But at the same time... I need to rescue the Preferton Phoenix's noncombatants before they are lost forever. At least this 'Corvin' seems reasonable; I'll let the Captain handle this.

After a moment's pause, Raven then asked, "What's your name again?"

Fayne Freewynne -

Hangar Bay Entrance

The words meant nothing to Fayne. She herself knew little of the other federation races histories. Even Eltex history had been largely during the AI war.

Freewynne wasn't a pre-AI name. She'd chosen it.

"We'll see." Fayne's voice reamained quiet, her tone was non-committal as her focus remained on Corvine and his shuttle.

Even so "It's good to remember where you come from."

"Fayne. Fayne Freewynne. Ship's counselor."

Captain Ash Pyrrhus

“It’s the ship Corvin.” Ash sounded numb, as if anticipating the coming conflicting interests. “We’re restoring the ship. We aren’t scrapping it….”

Ash took a step forward and put his hand on his crèchemate’s shoulder. His other hand subtlety creeping back to the sheathe of the boarding tomahawk concealed by his armor.

“This isn’t a salvage job CV. Find somewhere else. Please.”
My travels take me many places, from the scorching sands to the cold, dark vacuum of space. But I always return to my friends and family at The Pub.

Raven Nevets

"That's a nice name," Raven replied, then blurted out, "Here's hoping I survive whatever comes after; I have a wife and son..."

Katrina and Andrew; he fought for them, but will he ever see them again?
