05 April 2424 | USS Syl'Tara <NX-97841>, Kateira Suddeth, commanding

"You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile." Of course, it would be the Borg that they would be rushed to. Captain Suddeth let off a sharp reply in expletive-laced Hyskari before closing communications. The 'Tara was one hell of a ship, but she was not meant for this. Not yet. "Helm, bring us to bearing one-sixty-five mark fifty-seven. Let's go over and under, see if we can't catch them off target!"

By the time the quick "aye!" came from her helm officer, the captain sometimes humorously known as Captain Speedeth was already on her orders to Tactical to raise both shield bubbles and prepare the modulating phased cutter beams, and she even had Engineering spool up the slipstream drive in case they needed to beat a hasty retreat. It was only after all of this that she finally turned to her comms officer. "Lieutenant deSoto, dispatch a subspace message to Starfleet Command: we have engaged the Borg and require immediate assistance."

Kateira Suddeth was the right woman to command this anti-Borg ship. She knew, particularly after the still-painful trauma of the events on her homeworld twenty-three years ago, how long the odds were against the 'Tara holding the Borg here, particularly in the ship's present condition. She also knew how determined her crew would be to see the mission through, and she knew that she had the finest crew in the fleet - no matter what the Enterprise-F and her captain may claim.

She may have been the right woman for the job, but it would turn out to be a case of being in the absolute worst place at the absolute worst time for Captain Kateira Suddeth and her experimental ship.

15 May 2426 | Starfleet Command, San Francisco, Earth

Admiral Alexander M. G. Tucker, known to most of his colleagues as Al, tossed aside a padd in disgust. On it, the final evidence that the ship which had started devastating the outermost colonies was indeed the presumed-destroyed Syl'Tara, greatly altered by the Borg. With a heavy sigh, he finally said "Jesus, Kate." Tucker had made sure she got the 'Tara assignment over quite a few candidates higher on the promotion list. Even Admiral Kim turned it down in favor of her. The two had a working relationship that stretched all the way back to when his ship had made first contact with Hyskara in 2388.

Finally, the time came for the conference of captains he had summoned for the unenviable task of hunting down one of the most powerful Federation ships ever designed, augmented by the technology of one of their most fearsome enemies, and commanded by a captain who, if not by name, they all knew. He scooped the padd he had tossed aside back up before quickly striding out of his office to the briefing room.

As he did, he remained firm in the conviction - comforting to him, though rather macabre on its face - that his colleague and his friend had died in the battle two years ago...

Admiral Torel J'Rex
RRW Triarius
Orbit of Earth

Admiral Torel J'Rex was seated at his desk in his Ready Room pouring over logs and data pertaining to the Borg, as he had been doing for the last few days. Though his personal experience with the Borg was limited, the Federation had no shortage of information and data on the hostile species, which the Republic's status as a prominent Alliance member fortunately meant the Romulan Admiral had access to. Ever since volunteering for this assignment, Torel had made it his business to learn everything about his new enemy that he possibly could in the hopes of being better able to destroy them. Unfortunately however, the case of the Syl'Tara seemed to be quite unique and atypical of the usual straightforward "overpower and assimilate" strategies of the Borg, which would undoubtedly make this more complicated than a run-of-the-mill strike against a Cube. Torel was not about to let that fact dissuade him however, as in addition to eliminating the threat the Syl'Tara posed to the Republic, he had personal reasons for wanting to see the vessel destroyed: the Romulan merchant vessel it had mercilessly annihilated had been captained by one Dalok Liun, a retired Republic officer and a man who had been a good friend of Torel's since his time at the Imperial War College.

After receiving a message from his communication's officer that they had arrived in the Sol System, Torel deactivated his personal console and made his way to the nearest transporter room. After a flash of green light, he soon found himself standing just outside Starfleet Command in the City by the Bay. Wearing his formal dress uniform as a sign of respect for his hosts, he was easily spotted by the young Andorian officer who had been sent to escort him to the briefing room. Upon reaching their destination, Torel took a seat and waited for the briefing to begin; with any luck they would soon begin their hunt for the aberrant Borg vessel, and his friend could finally be avenged...

Vice Admiral Reginald Carmichael, Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco, Earth

Vice Admiral Carmichael barged into the meeting room that Al had chosen for the conference, barely noticing the Romulan wearing a dress uniform already in the room. He was wearing his duty uniform which was a bit rumpled from what he had been working on when he had gotten the top secret message.

"Is it true Admiral Tucker?" he said, still keeping up some formalities since the Romulan was in the room with them, "The Syl'Tara is still around?"

He stood next a chair at the far end of the table while he waited for a response from Admiral Tucker.

Captain Sah
Starfleet Headquarters
San Francisco, Earth

As with any young officer summoned to a meeting with a group well above their usual contact grade, Circe had arrived well early. She'd also arrived impeccably dressed in the appropriate uniform, carrying a well cared for padd. She had long held that it never hurt to make a good impression with one's colleagues, or especially one's superiors. Though the padd had also come long on with the ulterior motive of providing her something to look at during the inevitable downtime. Indeed, she had gotten through two of her own duty logs and a solid chunk of Kateira Suddeth's biography-record before Admiral Tucker entered.

Admiral Tucker took a moment to chuckle as he briskly walked toward the briefing room, breaking the doorway at precisely 14:00. Of course Reg would be all riled up about it. "Unless I've started being lied to by my best intel sources, it's the 'Tara, Commodore, and now the whole damn fleet is going to be asking the same question. Good to see you again, all the same. We must take more time to catch up at some point."

As per his usual habits, he quickly but calmly walked around to greet the other officers present. "Captain Sah. I heard about the events on the Apollo. Captain Tupling was a good friend. I'm glad you got the chance to serve with her, and I'm glad to see that you have quickly moved up the ranks. Welcome."

Turning next to the Romulan, Al seemed to calm a bit. "You must be the Romulan delegated to this task force. Admiral Alexander Tucker, Commander, Starfleet. Welcome to Headquarters. I do look forward to working with you as part of this project."

Al kept walking a bit, then paused. "Wait a minute. Where are Commodore Holt and Captains Nimrala, Dunaway, and Keplings? I sent priority one instructions to have them meet us here at fourteen-hundred."

Actually a Commodore, but soon to be a Vice Admiral Reginald Carmichael

“How do you think I heard the rumors?” Reg said as he took his seat, “People have been talking. And maybe they had to take shuttles instead of transporting down. Wouldn’t be the first time people have had transporter troubles.”

Reg leaned back in his chair as he waited for the rest of the meeting to get there.

Admiral Torel J'Rex
Earth
Starfleet Command

When Admiral Tucker introduced himself, Torel gave a polite nod and replied: "Jolan tru Admiral Tucker, I am Admiral Torel J'Rex and I look forward to working with you as well. Republic Command wished for me to extend their sympathies for the Federation's losses to this Borg vessel, and I want to let you know I'll do everything I can to help bring it to justice." With the formalities out of the way, Torel decided he should probably leave the question of why some officers were late to the briefing to be answered by the other Starfleet personnel in the room, and the Vice Admiral soon proffered a theory involving transporter malfunctions, though the Romulan thought it odd that so many transporters should fail to function simultaneously. Whatever the case, Torel hoped they'd arrived soon; though he hid it well, he was anxious to get the hunt underway...

Captain Lasik Keplings
Earth
Starfleet Command

It had been a few months since Lasik had stepped foot on her adoptive world. Where she'd been born, she'd never truly know. Yet, Earth was her home. She was raised her, it might as well be her home world. The young vulcan exited her vehicle and walked briskly to her meeting. Admiral Tucker was very particular about time, and she was somewhat late, though not by much. Being in space had changed Lasik. For starters, her concept of time had somewhat been eroded by the void. And second, she was attracted to the mundane. When a cityscape might bore others, it enthralled her. There was so much life in such a small place, when she might go for weeks without seeing a planet. That's why she'd taken her shuttle to Command.

Lasik entered the meeting room and wordlessly by the others. She cleared her throat "I apologize, the traffic to get her was most illogical." Having met few Vulcans, Lasik was not often very good at seeming like one. Being cut off from their culture and way of speaking had left her isolated, but she had learned a few things from those she meet. Besides, even without other Vulcans, she could tell when something was illogical, even if her parents and human friends would disagree.

Shortly afterword she added "I'm Captain Lasik Keplings of the Vigliance. I'm pleased to meet all of you." Lasik was still unfamiliar with most other officers other than her own, having been on missions without having time to socialize on Earth. Once, she would have mistaken a Romulan for a Vulcan and would have saluted him as a fellow Vulcan. She'd made that mistake several times in her first years in Starfleet but quickly learned the difference. She noticed him after sitting down and wondered why he was here. Romulans were not always known for being helpful to Starfleet.

Captain Sean Dunaway
Starfleet HQ

IT was funny really, in an era of phaser based weaponry, war drives, massive interstellar combat, and hyper advanced technology, that the rest of the galaxy seem to have forgotten just how effective a metal slug at high velocity could be. He shifted his weight as he walked down the corridor towards the meeting room, the shoulder holster sat comfortably underneath his blue overcoat.

He had built the weapon from fabricated parts during a ground mission during the war with the Undine, the bastards were tough against phasers, but surprisingly weak towards slugs.

None the less, he could dwell on those memories later. The doors to the room opened and he took a moment to look around the room. While he had plenty of time to go over the personal files of each of them, he doubted many recognized the "White Wolf" of Starfleet.

He took a seat. "Captain Dunaway, USS Anastasia Romanov."

His white hair was slicked back and cut short, which his facial hair trimmed and cut to but a stable.

"Captain Seh, of the U.S.S.Osiris," she added in after the others introduced themselves. She had no doubt that like herself, everyone had already pulled the files on the captains and ships they knew would be involved, and would quickly gather the rest after the briefing was concluded. Still, it was nice to put a live face to the names. Somehow it made them seem more real.

As soon as Seh introduced herself, a beam of emerald-green light appeared near one of the empty chairs, and materialized into a light-blue-skinned humanoid with snow-white eyes and barely-visible golden stripes on her forehead.

"Greetings, everyone. I'm sorry for being late, but my ship is having transporter problems, so I had to use my personal transporter I received as a gift on my homeworld, Kha'Zann."
The being quickly realized it said too much information than needed, so tried to correct her mistake by simply saying:
"Captain Leven Nimrala, U.S.S. Divinity."

15 May 2426 | Starfleet Headquarters, San Francisco, Earth

A quick rush of the arrivals came in at soon after 14:00. Admiral Tucker, by this point, was rather agitated. "If anyone paid attention to the briefs I wrote asking you to come here, I expected everyone here at fourteen hundred. It is now 14:03, and for the mission I'll be having you on, promptness is ESSENTIAL! We do not have time to be gallivanting around on this one, folks."

After his small rant, however, Al quickly calmed down. "Captains Nimrala, Dunaway, Keplings, Admiral Al Tucker, Commander, Starfleet. Would you all take your seats? We have a lot to cover."

After making sure that everyone had padds on the assignment, he pulled up a hologram of a modified Perception-class starship on the table's projectors. "Meet the USS Syl'Tara. Perception class, experimental modifications, registry NX-97841. She was an experimental anti-Borg testbed we'd been working on for the better part of 20 years. Disappeared near the Outer Regions two years ago. She's commanded... or rather, was commanded, by..." A switch to another hologram, a shorter Hyskari woman. "Captain Kateira Suddeth. If not by name, most of you probably know her by reputation. Most Academy cadets I've talked to still recall her as one of the toughest and yet best superintendents they'd hope to have. Survived the Last Night of Hyskara in 2400."

"On 5 April 2424, the 'Tara responded to an emergency distress call from the New Andor colony on Andrax V. En route, she ran long into a Borg tactical cube, notified us of the engagement, and disappeared without trace by the time reinforcements arrived. We thought she had been destroyed, until..." A third hologram, a grainy image from a monitoring satellite near one of the colonies. "Six days ago, we received this image from the navcon satellite near Mellari. Computer, enhance?" After a quick enhancement, the distinct outline of a modified Perception-class starship came into view. "We don't know why, but they've assimilated the ship, and that makes the Syl'Tara your assignment. I'm assigning your ships to the Outer Regions under Commodore Carmichael's command. We're calling it Task Force Shadow's Forge. Ideally, your goal is to recover the ship and its crew, the crew at the very least. Destroy it only if necessary."

Al quickly turned to Reg. "Commodore Carmichael, with this assignment, Command has decided that it is time you earn your next promotion. As such, it is my honor to promote you to the rank of Vice Admiral, with all the privileges and responsibilities therein." He held out an early-2300s Vice Admiral's rank pin, along with the modern rank pip, with a simple "Congratulations, Vice Admiral Carmichael."

15 May 2426 | Conference Room, USS Lambert

Jeanne took a deep breath, calming her nerves. She had been aware that her vessel was too far from Earth for her to attend the meeting in person, but she hadn't expected one of the Federation's long-range communication satellites to break down. Not that there was anything she could do to help; her vessel was trained to treat the wounded, not broken machines. That's what happened when you were a hospital ship with a skeleton engineering crew. There was already another vessel attending to it, however, and she had but to wait.

"Captain Gange, they're reporting that the satellite is repaired. We can initiate the uplink when you're ready." Jeanne's communications officer said. The new captain looked over at the console on the wall of the empty room as she took a deep breath. 14:07-- later than she wanted to be, earlier than she thought she was going to be. It would have to do.

"Initiate the uplink on a secure frequency to me." She replied, and a moment later, a viewscreen in the room lit up with the meeting already in progress. She immediately recognized most of those in attendance, though she'd had little to no contact with any of them in her Starfleet career. Jeanne hoped this would be a good chance to network other captains and superior officers, to earn their trust and respect, and to make up for the Lambert's failure in locating the Syl'Tara two years prior. Jeanne didn't like failure, and she wasn't about to allow herself to fail the same mission twice.

She waited for Admiral Tucker to finish speaking, and after he offered congratulations to the new Vice-Admiral, she spoke up. "Captain Gagne of the USS Lambert calling in. I apologize for the delay; congratulations, Vice Admiral."

Starfleet Command, Earth
14:01 Local Time, May 15th, 2426

For a ship who's motto was "We'll Be There When We're Meant to Be", the Narvik was sure cutting it close to missing the assigned date it had at Earth. They had to travel from the Dyson Sphere in Delta back to the access point in Romulan space, stop by New Romulus to rotate some personnel, and then complete the "trek" to Earth, all of which took significant time.

Holt, a military man who prided himself on being there exactly on time, was getting more and more restless. As SI's representative for this new mission, he carried sensitive information on the Syl'Tara for the briefing, would lend his skills and ship to help track it down, would help discern the purpose behind these attacks...and would represent on their behalf whether it was safe to retrieve the ship, or whether it had to be destroyed. All in all, it was no small task - which was all the more reason why he needed to be there on time.

"Sir, we have achieved stable geosynchronous orbit around Earth." The helmsman reported, bringing him out of his daydream. Good, they could leave immediately.

"Very good Lieutenant, maintain this position until we return back." Holt slapped his combage. "Transporter room, this is Narvik Ten. Prepare three to beam down to SFHQ. Over." Grabbing a couple of PAADs, he and a couple of the bridge officers took off towards the transporter, not wanting to waste any more time.

...

Holt checked his wrist chronometer, standing outside the conference room. It read "14:01", local time. Based on that, and the sound of Admiral Tucker talking, the briefing had already started. What an embarrassment this was...well, there was no point in standing out there doing nothing, it was time to go in before they missed any more of it.

Quietly, a trio of Starfleet officers, wearing the black uniform of SI, stepped into the room and took their seats. First was Holt himself, wearing the coat of a flag officer, followed by a blond-haired woman with the rank pips of a commander, and a dark haired man with the rank pips of a lieutenant commander. Trying to not interrupt the briefing in progress, they quickly sat down in their assigned seats, and waited.

Starfleet Command, Earth

The young vulcan captain raised an eyebrow "I do not wish to sound uncaring, but I was under the impression that assimilation was irreversible." Lasik was painfully aware of how her next words would be playing into the stereotype of her people, that they were emotionless. Still, the words had to be said. Lasik looked around the table, at each captain "Wouldn't be more logical to ambush and destroy the Borg's ship? If they've already assimilated our ship, they have no doubt assimilated the crew. I hardly see how one ship should be more important than all our ships and crew. If we were to surround it, I doubt it could withstand a full barrage for long. Or, if the 'Tara is really that valuable, perhaps we could disable it. Still, I doubt the Borg would leave it without escort if they value it so highly. Trying to retake it would prove very difficult if while it was boarded a Borg cube or several attacked us. Then there's the matter of actually killing the Borg manning the 'Tara. We'd need to send in professional soldiers. Not just scientists and engineers."

She paused to give them all a moment to consider her words. "Personally, I'd rather surround it and destroy it. But if we must take the 'Tara, I volunteer my ship and crew to board it. My crew are trained for war, my ship was designed for war. We will eliminate the Borg on-board the 'Tara. I'll need some captains to guard the Vigilance while we are boarding. I'll need all my men to take it, only a skeleton crew will man the Vigilance. And, if worst comes to worst, you must destroy the 'Tara. With or without me and my crew on it. It is more important to not give our enemy a vital weapon against us than to save one crew."

"I believe it would be best if the Divinity was sent ahead of the main fleet to act as a scout. It is the smallest ship in Shadow's Forge, meaning we could outmanouver the Syl'Tara much more easily then some of the larger ships, like the Anastasia," spoke Leven.

"Besides, with the Divinity's nadion saturation bombs, we could disable the Syl'Tara long enough for the fleet to disable her weapons array and star boarding her."

Now Vice Admiral Reginald Carmichael

Reginald took the new pips and replaced the commodore ones on his neck. He let the others talk before deciding to speak up for himself, "Folks, your plans are all well and good, but I think we need to remember the chain of command here. All of you will be given a chance to talk and hash out your personal pet projects, but we are going to need to be on the same page. There have been some good ideas, but one of us is in command of the task force.

"Now, I appreciate Captain Lasik's enthusiasm to board and engage the Borg in combat we have to make sure that we're able to not give the Borg more drones to use against us. It's likely that we'll lose some people in a frontal assault like that so while it may come to boarding actions I want to keep that in our back pocket."

He turned now to the Captain of the Divinity, "Captain Nimrala, the bomb your ship is equipped with may be able to disable the Syl'Tara, but we have to factor in Borg adaptation. We may have only one shot at trying to recapture the Syl'Tara. I'd much rather have my big hitters at my disposal all at once, rather than losing them piecemeal to the Borg adapting to them. We'll need to work together, and not be going off into the wild blue yonder willy nilly.

"Now, the final thing I want to talk about, it sometimes is possible to reverse the assimilation of someone, I'm aware of only a couple of instances of it working, so we should not be expecting to be able to pull it off with anyone we see on the Syl'Tara. And if anyone here was thinking that we're going to be able to save our beloved superintendent, just know, that Kateira Suddeth would die before she allowed herself to become assimilated. We cannot go into this thinking that we'll find her and save her. I'm working on the assumption that she's dead, and I would recommend others do as well."

With that he leaned back in his chair again while waiting for a response.

It is a complicated procedure, and in the midst of combat impractical, but if we can temporarily neutralize the drones, we should be able to pull it off. This is the kind of task that my vessel is designed for, and with EMH assistance, we can perform eight of these at a time. I would like to recommend that we prioritize preventing the assimilation of our own crews first, and only attempt deassimilation on the crew of the Syl'Tara if practical." Jeanne said. Immediately after accepting this mission she had set her crew to studying the medical logs from the USS Voyager and other ships that had successfully performed the procedures. Her crew had done it before, but it was difficult, and one that she felt her medical staff could always be more familiar with.

Circe peered into the hologram of the Syl'tara. It didn't seem to make any sense. It was unlike the Borg, unlike anything they'd seen or heard reported before - at least as for as Circe was aware of. However, if there was one thing that she picked up during her anti-Borg exercise, it was that they always followed their particular brand of logic. They were powerful but ultimately predictable. Unless there was something on the board they were not seeing. She looked around to speak up, took a deep breath against speaking up among such well-regarded captains, then interjected.

"I hate to bring us in a different direction, but wouldn't there be some value in visiting the outposts that the Syl'Tara has already struck? There might be archived sensor readings or at the very least forensic traces of the weapon systems used. They could be utilizing the experimental systems the Syl'Tara was equipped with. Not to mention, there might be some indication as to why the Borg are striking these outposts, with this unusual vessel. If we can determine their motivations perhaps we understand why the Syl'Tara has reappeared, can anticipate the next attack, or even lure them to an ambush."

Lasik leaned forward in her chair turning towards the officer who had mentioned a way to undo assimilation, "If you are confidant that we could save the 'Tara's crew by breaking the Borg's hold over them how would we do this? Forgive me, but I was not originally trained in a combat role and was just recently taught better tactics for battle. I did not have the time to study medical history. From my limited knowledge, I'm only aware of the fact that the Borg are quite resistant to phasers. I'm assuming that stunning them is out of the question. But even if we could use your new method, how would we subdue the survivors? And then there is the fact that our crews will have to live with the fact that they killed Borg drones we might have been able to save. Personally, I can live with the sacrifice, it's not pleasant but we must work quickly. My crew, and your crews, might not understand our actions."

With that, she turned to Vice Admiral Carmichael "If you want the use of my ship's full fire power, perhaps a smaller ship could draw them into a trap. My ship, and a few others are Akira class starships. We could concentrate our fire on one part of the ship. However, since you are a superior office, I would like to know how you personally wish to tackle this issue. What is your plan? Are we destroying or cpaturing the 'Tara?"

Sean Dunaway, captain, Starfleet

He pondered the others words. Folding his hands, he spoke. "The Anastasia fits extensive armor and weapon systems, a literal battleship for lack of a better term, she also fits a fighter compliment as well as a 200 man marine regiment, armed with kentic weapons and boarding charges, if we do assult the Tara, i recommend the Anastasia lead the assault."

He took a moment to look around, taking in his fellow Captains reactions from his matter if a fact style of speech and lack of emotion.

Vice Admiral Carmichael

Reginald sat back up in his chair before speaking again, "That is a good idea Captain Sah. And that's one that we'll have to discuss more once we have more time to brainstorm about what we're going to do. And Captain Dunaway, just like how I liked Captain Lasik's determination to go first I commend you on your willingness to be at the forefront of an assault on the Syl'Tara, but we still do not have a concrete plan about what we're going to do."

He turned back to Captain Lasik before speaking again, "As of right now my first thought is to destroy the Syl'Tara, but I realize that Admiral Tucker wants our first goal to be recovery. In my mind though, if we start getting a bunch of resistance from the Borg as we're engaging with it I will give the order for the ship to be destroyed and for us to put the safety of our crews first. As I'm sure you're away Captain Lasik, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one."

It would be easier just to incorporate a "Grief Region" button, so you wouldn't even need to make the effort to do the actual raiding. Players could just bounce from region to region and destroy everyone else's efforts at will, without even bothering about WA status. Wouldn't that be nice. -Frisbeeteria

Lasik Keplings nodded and smiled. A rather strange expression to be seen on a vulcan, who were usually very serious people. Nevertheless, it was a sweet smile, one that any young woman might have. Her time being raised by humans had certainly changed the way she acted. "I'm glad that we are in agreement, vice admiral. I have the upmost confidence in your leadership. Though, to be blunt, just how dangerous is the ship we are hunting? Shouldn't our combined firepower be enough for one ship? Surely the Vigilance and Anastasia alone could out gun it. What kind of weapons does it have?"

Admiral Tucker chuckled as they all got right to work on solving the problem.
He knew he had picked the right group of captains after all, though he seemed remarkably frustrated with their sudden leap to destroying the ship. "Hey, the orders for retrieving the 'Tara come direct from the Council. It's over even my head, folks, so don't botch this one."

"As for how powerful this ship is, for starters, she fits twin warp cores, one of which is entirely devoted to combat systems. She's outfitted with technologies we've been researching since Voyager returned almost 50 years ago. Transphasic torpedoes, ablative neutronium armor, Borg cutting weapons modified to fit Federation phaser banks. Her real ace in the hole, though, is her speed. Syl'Tara carries the first working long-duration Federation quantum slipstream drive. She was about to test a speed of Warp 9.9999999 when she was lost. No doubt the Borg have augmented that technology, so the main issue is catching her and managing to hold up under that kind of weapons fire. You'll have your work cut out for you by far."

Vice Admiral Reginald

Reginald turned to Admiral Tucker at the mention of the Federation Council given the order to recover the ship, “The Council has to realize that we may have to make a choice between the ship and our crews, and quite frankly I will not jeopardize my crew let alone all these crews for this ship. There is a good chance that we will be forced to take this ship out of the sky. Especially with all the tech it has and may have been upgraded with.”
