As I'm fleshing out my military I've always kept this in mind: my power projection capacity is horrendous. Huge parts of my military would probably never get to partake in the nation's conflicts, probably stuck patrolling the borders or just too far away to be useful at any given moment. Nevermind the politics that would go into trying to maintain cohesion in the military and not get a bunch of disagreeing officers fucking about doing their own thing because High Command is so far away from the actual sites of battle.

No matter how much members I have, holding up a war in another universe with such a vast yet decentralised nation would pretty much be like early USA begging state militias to do something helpful.

Yes, if you want to be fully realistic a space empire of sorts would collapse in on itself so that does hold up but if you’re trying to write a story I think it’s fair to handwave that whole aspect sometimes. Unless the story is based around that sort of near-constantly imploding state, then go for it.

Of course I just remove humans entirely and make aliens who are cooler than us that just wouldn’t cause their space empire to implode in on itself or in-fight to such a degree
