We never did, that policy was imposed on us by the Dutch, but if you're thinking whether or not pegging the rupiah to gold would help the economy, I'd say it may or may not have the unfortunate side effect of shooing away investors who use Indonesia as a source of offshore labour with the higher cost. Now, whether or not the now stronger, gold-backed rupiah can offset this negative effect is something else I need to look into further to accurately agree or disagree with you.

My take: American libertarians have it backwards. Big government is libertarian because as more people govern, each individual has less individual governing power, and therefore it becomes rule by the majority. Conversely, small government is authoritarian, because only a few people have endless authority over the vast majority of people.
