i think the easiest solutions are either the "living zoo" theory or that they're just too advanced for us to detect on a regular basis. i do think we've detected aliens before --- the wow! signal is in my opinion the strongest evidence --- but i do think it's far more likely we haven't discovered alien life on a regular basis because they're too advanced for us to detect. the whole "humans are the first" theory just reeks of human exceptionalism and also really undersells how long 14 billion years is, primarily due to the human brain's "big number block". in addition, i don't think it's unlikely that human civilization is just in a underdeveloped part of the galaxy or the galaxy itself is even in some sort of power vacuum.

That logic doesn't follow. The place's name isn't "South New Wales" or the south and north bullshit to matter. Now renaming Queensland is probably not a bad idea independent of that, but unless you wanna rename Australia into New Wales, what you're suggesting is a dumb idea.
