[The Great Basin Kingdom]

Even though the entire population isn't magical, the term Hexe/Hexen has been used for the citizens of Azur Deutschland, interchangeable with being called Germans. The nature of Azur Deutschland's culture has made the term Hexe popular. Life is quite magical and fantastical.

Huh, that's a pretty interesting thing. I'll try to remember their people don't go by 'Deutschlanders,' but by 'Hexe'.

Grant's election nevertheless comes as a tradeoff for the Republican Party. While most of his co-partisans remain committed to eliminating the 'twin relics' of the continent—slavery in the South (and its aftermaths) and polygamy in their abrasive Great Basin neighbor—Grant believes success depends on focus, and he considers what happens within America's borders more important than the strange pilgrims without it. If Basinite farmers want to live in an alkaline scrubland, and if Basinite preachers want to rage about nations and empires and modern Babylons, and if Basinite women want to marry each other in 'biblical polygamy,' then who is Grant to stop them? He'll leave America's door open to any who wish to leave the kingdom, but he won't try to erase it by force. No, he already destroyed one rebellious 'nation' of anti-Unionists, and he plans to focus on cleaning up that mess before tackling anything else.

Truly, I am curious as to how this'll play out.

President Grant has two kinds of enemies: the first are the ex-Confederate Democrats still hung up about how the American Civil War ended. The second are the so-called "Half Breed" Republicans who think Grant should have stayed retired after his adminsitration's embarrassing corruption scandals. Despite these controversies, however, Grant has two kinds of supporters who swept him into office for a third term: northerners who still consider him a savior of the Union who won the Civil War, and Black southerners pressing for his Stalwart faction to keep the pressure up on Reconstruction while the Half Breeds are ready to give it up. Grant is grateful for the former camp but most interested in keeping his promises to the latter; fears over the Half Breeds fumbling Reconstruction animated his decision to campaign for a third term, and absence from office has had the surprising effect of radicalizing Grant such that he is more committed than ever to protecting and promoting racial equality and justice. Now empowered less by backroom politicking and more by national popularity, Grant is a president who can claim a mandate, and he intends to make the most of it.

The Sun Ray Dancers are expected to weep for the Sun-Sacrifice, which is left dangling during the cold night.

the Sacrifice is reborn not only as the myth's Sun but as an Adoptee and is regarded as a guest of honor in the rest of the weekly celebration, and the community is expected to nurse them back to health.

Well, I guess after all the other stuff, that's the least they can do.

Really liking these specialized anthem ceremonies. They break from what I'm used to.

People start clapping - but not in the usual way - they clap with one own hand and one hand of a neighbor. Then the anthem starts and is simultaneously sung choral and in sign language. It ends with hands in the air and then hugging.

The national languages are English and French. English is the most dominant language, followed by Vietnamese, French, Mandarin, and Japanese. French has seen a steady decline in speakers, while Vietnamese and Chinese have seen an increase in the last three decades.

So, English and French are the official languages, but French is no longer as dominant. Interesting.

These trades, however, were done under strict secrecy to protect the existence of Vera Roma and so the Islands became something of a legend in countries around the Mediterranean; folklore about magical vanishing islands most likely arose from those who witnessed malfunctions of the Veil Maker. In this state of isolation, Vera Roma retained the traditional Roman culture and society, taking in new technology and philosophies as they came along, but remaining more or less a living cenotaph of Classical Rome. This state of isolation continued until 1985 when Emperor Aemillian IX decided it was time to end the isolation and for the Islands to join the rest of the world as Romulus had said they must someday. Vera Roma's revelation of its existence was a shock to the world, with media attention remaining on the country for the entire year.

For a nation that looks to be a run of the mill Roman revivalist remnant who's motives are up in the air, the concept is, to an extent, interesting. The Veil Maker and how it came to be is, ironically, in as much secrecy to the user as the islands were to the general public. I'm hoping a factbook covering that is at least in the works. Looking good so far.

Man, lemme tell you that the Chains of Intimacy novels has got nothing on this shit. Why aren't bored and lonely Los Santos housewives reading this? This is way more highbrow and well-written than that slop. Though I will say, I would never write any material on NationStates of this type. No sir, this is a clean nation.
