Sin taxes do not refer to thing that are actually sins, they merely refer to anything that a given society wants to discourage without completely outlawing and so they use taxes to make it more expensive and therefore discouraged. Most Lilguayians would not call eating sugar a sin, and like people anywhere, many Lilguayians enjoy their sweets.

In Lilguay, we don't usually like taxes on consumption because they are regressive, but we may have some in certain circumstances. Sin taxes are placed on added sugars because added sugars have health consequences which the people often cannot avoid, and even if individuals could realistically avoid added sugars and/or the negative health consequences of added sugars, the burden should not be on the individual to make sure the food available for public consumption is healthy. In addition, detriments to the health of members of our society strains our healthcare resources, so the idea is to disadvantage food producers that add sugar to their products by using a tax to make their product more expensive than products that do not add sugar. The tax is actually applied to the seller of the product, but in most cases in a market economy, any tax or additional cost that businesses (cooperative or otherwise) will tend to be passed on to the consumer, and if in the unlikely circumstance the business does not pass the cost on to the consumer, that would reduce their income or profit, which may incentivize them to switch away from adding sugars to their products.
