That seems a little worrying.. once they become too powerful they might become a little too power-hungry and might start invading other countries that have little to no capability of defending themselves, and it will all snowball into a huge war that might involve the entire world.

Rome, Italy- It has been near three years since the fall of Rome, the infamous day when the condotierri of the now expunged Orsinsi clan devastated and destroyed much of our most Holy of Cities. The following years saw the Italian peninsula fall into a period of rebellion, civil war, sectarian violence, rapacious greed and terror. Anarchy. Foreign armies laid waste the land, and attempted to manipulate our colonies into destroying our institutions. Spain turned into itself. All was blood. All was death. God punished us for our sins. It was truly the Bellum Vulturiorum. The War of The Vultures. They who sought to eat the carrion of Mother Roma.

Yet the faithful weathered the storm, and we have begun to recover from the time of destruction. Led by a beatific vision of the Virgin Mother, the Pope Soter II indeed saved Rome from disaster. He, in union with the heroic Brotherhood of The Caveja, brought order to chaos and light into the dark. Thus we look back in saddness and express hope for a better tomorrow. What then, has occurred between then and now? We shall endeavor to quickly and succinctly cover the developments of the past year or so.

First and most importantly, the pontificate has been restored to full power over the Empire. Spain has submitted to its feudal authority, as has the Low Countries. Only one territory has not done so, and this will be explained below. Pope Soter II has restored the government much to the way it was as a status quo ante bellum, with only new security measures being added for the next conclave after his death. As part of this program, the Pope has refounded the sacred and sacrificed bodyguard, The Sacred Band of Saints Sergius and Bacchus. It's former sole survivor, Paolo Borgia, has abdicated his position as King of Romagna to take up command of the holy order. The continuation of legitimate government was essential for restoring stability to the nation. Many, especially those who ran the commune of Rome during the war, decried this action as a subjugation of their liberties. The inquisition under Cardinal d'Euse-Borgia has been tasked with watching these elements closely. Many offices and congregations of the church are still vacant, pending appointments from our very busy pontiff. Territorially, Italy shall also return to status quo ante bellum, with two notable changes. Firstly, The Kingdom of The Romagna shall continue to exist so long as its current succession can be maintained. Secondly, The Duchy of The Two Sicilies will for the immediate future remain under direct papal administration via a Papal Legate until a proper Duke can be named. As the territory can be claimed by the Spanish Royal House and that of France, Soter II has done so to mitigate both claims.

Okay, the anarchy seems extremely dystopian, but I don't think a theocracy could save it either...

The Cosmician government has pledged to help out the people of Europe by pumping various types of gases in gas pipelines to see their effect
on the economy and the people.

In Europe, a major military conflict has erupted between two factions, called NATO and CSTO respectively, but mainly between the CSTO member
Russia and the non-aligned country Ukraine. The conflict has resulted in 10s of thousands of casualties, and there is support for both factions.

The Cosmician research team was able to infiltrate an inactive gas pipeline using the ongoing fog of war, where they began the energy-matter
conversion to various gases. The first gas tested was helium; 3.8 million cubic meters of it was forcefully pumped into the pipeline, which then
was unwittingly transferred to other pipelines. After using devices that normally required natural gas, people reported poor performance of
stoves and other heaters, as well as side effects such as a high-pitched voice, lower apparent gravity, and in extreme cases even floating upward.

The next gas used was Substance 29E-46 (exact composition classified), 1,650,000 cubic meters were pumped this time, the gas resulted in
immediate health issues: nausea, vomiting, convulsions, cerebral hemorrages and [SEGMENT CUT, INFORMATION SECRET BY IMPERIAL DECREE].

After the incident, the experiment was called off, but reports from Europe tell only more and more horrible stories of "dimensional monsters".
Cosmician planetary archivists are working to reset Europe back to the pre-experiment state, if a backup even exists.
