They expanded and modernised so much by the '60s that they merged to create a new major city to rival the likes of Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle, and even neighbouring Coventry and Birmingham. The new city reached a population of 800k in the late '90s, and was the centre for the British car manufacturing industry. Now the UK's 2nd city, it has become a bustling international commercial hub, Britain's most cosmopolitan city and a centre of British history with landmarks such as the Norman-age Warwick Castle and the red sandstone ruins of Kenilworth Castle, now the venue of Britain's largest music festival.
