OOC: My old flag from before it was re-established in April 2023 was terribly designed (it was just the Kenyan flag with the current color scheme and crosses, with a Crescent Moon and Sun to the left and right of the shield respectively, hence the "swaziland on acid and jesus" quote). For my new flag I wanted something less cluttered while keeping the sun and moon motif, hence my current design.

IC: The sun and moon motif comes from how the early settlers of Southland practiced an esoteric form of Christianity that incorporated aspects of astrology. 1. I got the Idea for the nation from a lot of different things, and it has been built up as I've played this nation. I take inspiration from the unknown, ghost stories and folktales I heard growing up, my own personal ideas and experiences, and pop culture. My concept was something of a cross between victorian catholic ideas and superstitions regarding hell, but also chinese deities and folklore, with aspects of buhddism. I was also very inspired by yuyu hakusho, I loved that manga when I was younger.

2. This is probably no supprise given the 1st answer, but many aspects of my nation apply to me. The whole sun never shines thing is related to the fact I am a night owl, and how i was and am so pale that kids used to think I was some sort of ghoul growing up. The mishmash of religious beliefs is a tribute to my own path of spirituality, which was very confusing. Many of the characters I thought of myself, and they are all inspired by my hallucinations of sorts. Ever since i was young, I suffered from terrible anxiety and would always see and hear things that weren't really there. I think this reflects heavily in my nation, the sort of eerieness and shadowy vibe comes from my own feeling of being watched. Much of the eerie dread I try to convey in my factbooks and lore comes from my day to day experience. My leader is also pretty inspired by me, when it comes to feeling like a puppet stuck in a limbo sate. The lack of motivation and not feeling most strong emotions unless I am very interested in something is reflective of me aswell. Plus the smoke. I picked up that habit at 13 and I never really quit. I just always liked the look of smoke, I think it's pretty. I don't smoke often, but I always have a pack on me just in case.

3. I got the idea to make my overview on the forums. I saw people that had them and I wanted to have a good place to organize my lore. I am not very good with formatting, so I found a template and went from there. I add on what I want so I can have a good center point for my lore and have a document that other users can read when participating in these threads. I glad you liked my idea btw! makes me happy.

Southland exists in an alternate universe where magic, the supernatural, different sentient creatures, and aliens exists. The continent it exists on is called Bangea, which for the longest time (until the Age of Colonialism arrived) was considered a "lost continent" akin to Terra Australis. Since Southland by far is the largest and most economically powerful nation on Bangea, it's fair to say that it does dominate the continent.

What overall culture would you say Southland is most analagous to? What differences exist between this real life culture and Southland's on a broad level?

The United States is probably the biggest influence on it culturally. It actually wasn't a conscious decision on my part; it was just something that naturally evolved over time. South Africa, Canada, and the E.U. are probably secondary influences, due to their multiethnic natures. The biggest difference between it and the U.S. is Southland is more left-wing due to having a stronger socialist movement in the 20th century, and race relations is far less tense for different reasons (among humans, it's because Rev. Philip Browne, considered to be the "founder of Southland", strongly preached for women's rights and equality between the human races. A popular story is that when Browne witness a man whipping a slave, he was so enraged that he grabbed the whip and beat the slavedriver senseless with it. Between the different species it was due to both intiatives taken by the socialist government when it governed from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s to strongly bring them into society, with many of the initiatives remaining in place to the modern day, and cross-species grassroot campaigns to secure their rights).

What is the story behind Southland's flag, as in when was it created and what does it symbolize?

The early settlers of Southland practiced an esoteric form of Christianity that incorporated aspects of astrology. The "sun and moon" motif was meant to reflect this, to represent how God used the stars to control one's destiny. This symbol was used by Christian ministers in tandem with the cross as a result; Rev. Browne's iconic cloak for example had a large bronze button with the symbol printed on it. This meant the sun and moon symbol has always been used in Southland's flags. From 1701 to the mid-19th century, the flag used a more complex version of the sun and moon symbol on an all-white background. From the mid-19th century to 1947, the flag was changed to one that's almost identical to the current flag, except without the crosses. The current flag was adopted in 1947, with the crosses added by the socialist government to try to win over the conservative elements of society to their cause. While that didn't exactly pan out, the flag designed stayed.

Has Southland ever had one or more civil wars? If so, what were said wars fought over?

Until Browne united the various city-states in 1692, they constantly warred with each other over control of resources. After it was unified, there was occasionally low-level fighting between them but it never became as bad as it was before unification. These fights would permanently end when the nation was re-organized into your typical provinces in the late 19th century, following complaints from newly established cities that the older city-states were overrepresented in parliament. The nation was at peace...

...until a massive civil war broke out from 1937-1945. In the early 1930s, Southlanders voted in a socialist government after their equivalent of the Great Depression happened. Several people in the military, including many high-ranking ones, were disturbed that a bunch of commies "seized" the government and were convinced they were going to destroy the Southlander way of life (mostly due to their policies of *gasp* granting unconditional equality to sentient non-humans in Southland proper; and the government moving to seize land from large landowners and factories from some rich businessmen, and dividing them up among the poor yeoman and workers respectively). So in 1937 these soldiers, organizing as the fascist National Traditionalist Party, launched an open revolt against the government and kickstarted a brutal insurgency. Many died, and the NatTrads engaged in several unsuccessful genocides against the non-humans and even some humans (mainly the indigenous, black people, and in Ürümmu the Oyghan tribe). Luckily the fascists were beaten, and when elections were called in 1946, the socialists and even the Southland Communist Party unsurprisingly won decisively, and they proceeded to govern uninterrupted until the mid-1970s.

Britannia is used here as a Latinate term for I guess you could say 'British' people in general, with Bretons claiming that heritage as Anglo-Norse England declined to, seeing themselves more English or even Norse than 'British'. That label went to Brittany with the establishment of a strong Breton nation.

The Republic of New Brittany is based in Canada, but the national government (the Republic of Great Brittany proper) is based in Brittany proper.

Where did you get the design for your nation?

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "design of your nation," but assuming you mean from where I got the inspiration to create this nation... well, I suppose it came primarily from the fact that I like history and I felt like giving a try to writing some world-building about a nation in the past, as I was a bit bored of my "main" nation Montevento, which is just an average modern democracy. As for why a British colony in Uruguay... I just wanted to explore a bit of a different concept playing with the idea of "what if the British invasions of the River Plate of 1806 and 1807 were successful and a colony was established?" Then I just expanded the idea and changed things to make it more interesting for me to write.

I'm not... My nationality should be one of the most obvious things when looking at East Plate, yet people always go with the wrong option and assume I am British... oh well.

Where did the name "East Plate" come from?

From the River Plate. East Plate is located at the Eastern bank of the River Plate... so my uncreative brain just went with "East Plate" as a name. Well, to tell the truth there is a bit more behind the name, with it mostly being a reference to the historical name given to the territories where East Plate is located. In real life, obviously, the country that occupies these territories is Uruguay... which actually is called the "Oriental Republic of Uruguay" or, in a slightly worse and unofficial translation of its Spanish name, "Eastern Republic of Uruguay." This is because it is located at the East of the Uruguay River. Additionally, the area was also previously known as the "Oriental Province" when it was under the control of the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata (Argentina), and "Oriental Strip" or "Eastern Strip" when under Spanish control. So, as you can see, "East Plate" comes both from me being unoriginal, and me trying to make a reference to the many historical names the region where East Plate is located has.

1. The system covers everything possible in Realms (the universe me and Ascion run), from something as complex as creating tailor-made illusions for five people to something as simple as charging your phone.
2. Places that make it easier for one to generate Qi would amplify one's abilities. An example of this is Jomblang cave in Yogyakarta. On the other hand, it is possible to line the walls of a room with a stone (as of yet unnamed) that dampens Qi and makes it harder to be used.
3. The combatants generate Qi by combining their own spiritual and physical energies, before using it to fuel their powers.
4. No characters so far are immune to everything per se, but one can have resistances or immunities to certain elements (usually their own), or be so powerful enemy attacks do little.

yes, it has all latin america and other territories in the world, what prevents it to make another war of independence are large educational reforms to lesson in history, a sense of pertenency to the union, high rate of independency, etc.

carlists: want the king to rule without prime minister and president, they want the habsburg to rule.
republicans: very self explanatory, they are just people that want a III republic.

the civil war commenced because all this factions didn't tolerated each other, the first to rebell were the carlists in cataluña and país vasco.

¡Hola Breizh-Veur! I've got some answers for you, thanks for the questions!

1. The original thing that brought me to NS was actually Drew Durnil's first video about this website, where he gave some light to the site and how it worked. I got intrigued, and about a week later decided to create my own nation, initially dubbed the Allied States of Scytharum and with a completely different flag. But lo and behold as I improved my skills, mapmaking, historical knowledge, etc., Scytharum has morphed into what it is today.

Now, for the universe. There are a couple of mediums that the Scytharumverse derives from, and I'll go through some of them. Scytharum is largely an alternate history concept for me, as essentially a combination of "What if the United States was founded in South America?" and "What if Brazil wasn't poor?", and I also added in some more elements from that premise. Such elements were a Central Powers victory in WW1 and WW2, my own take on the Domination of the Draka by S.M. Sterling, some elements of Southern Victory by Harry Turtledove (except the north and south were barely ever a united nation, splitting off from each other after the War of 1812), and some unique touches that I largely came up with, like Novgorord and Caucasia being stripped from the USSR after WW2, Deutches Tolles Afrika as a (as far as I know) unique spin on a German African colony, and others, with one more that I'd like to draw attention to being an obscure yet plausible scenario of "What if Texas became predominantly German?". A lot of it stems from alternate history, with some elements of hyperbole, but I largely leave it up to the viewer as to how accurate this alternate history would be. It gets pretty specific at times.

2. Generally speaking, yes. One day fairly recently, about a month ago if I recall correctly, I had a spurt of inspiration to write down as concise a summary of my general beliefs as possible. After some editing to make the piece more cohesive, and some other edits, I had made the summary of Goldenism seen in Scytharum's Ideology tab. While I won't say it is 100% applicable to what I believe, as any ideology really isn't, but it by-far is extremely close, closer than most ideologies I have learned about, and I've read up on a decent amount of them.

3. This is interesting, as the maps are fully self-made. Well, sort of. What I initially did was try to make a standard map with shading and whatnot, all elaborate, but I was relatively new to Paint.net, the program I use to make them, and so I flunked the first few maps, as they looked like somebody did the worst photoshop job in history. Soon, though, I learned more about how to use the program, as well as making things easier on myself by pixelating the map (as in, zoom far in enough, and the borders are generally 2 pixels wide), and hence the maps I use today were created.

4. Yeah, so this is a part of the Scytharumverse I do relatively little narration about, as it's only a mere mention in the "Cool War" subsection of the History tab in Archives. It's very dumbed down, so here's the explanation. Scytharum, in contrast to Germany, sought to build a reputation as an anti-imperialist power, and so moved towards giving its colonies independence, with these colonies remaining close allies of the UCS, and, yes, this includes Cuba. Since in this timeline the Soviets lost WW2, and as such Communism and Paquetism alike were, for all intents and purposes, discredited on the world stage, Fidel Castro did not overthrow the government of, funnily enough, Manuel Francisco Artime Buesa, who in our timeline politically led the Bay of Pigs invasion, who in Scytharum's timeline came to power instead of Batista due to the Revolt of the Sergeants never occurring, and Buesa being elected as the first President of Cuba.
