Oh, totally. My personal favorites are two post-AJ cases; The Broken Turnabout by Calvinball and one I just can't remember right now. Another great original case is A Game of Turnabouts by Gizmological, both made on AAO.

Ahoy, fellow student of history!

Have you considered historical specializations beyond topic/area? I remember you mentioned you find postwar (Korean/Vietnam War eras) American history really fascinating. But have you considered whether and how you want to do professional history? Teach? Work in museums? Become a librarian? Nonprofit advocacy? Or something outside of professional history entirely, like the foreign service? Or are these questions coming a little too early (if so, apologies; don't mean to put you on the spot ^^; )?

You've shared your Ace Attorney fanfic recommendations with me previously (quite digged "Someone From Home," by the way). You ever play any fancases (such as made with the AAO engine or Pywright)? If so, any recommendations on that front? (I liked "Two Sides of the Same Turnabout," which I hear tragically does not play properly since the transition from v5 to v6 of AAO.)

I do believe I've asked this before, but what was Baizou's relationship with, say, Ming-era China, or before then? I believe that they're even further from mainland east Asia than Japan is, and as such I'm interested to know how much Japan controlled their relationship with other powers. It'd be interesting if, say, the Japanese had bottlenecked how Baizou could interact with the mainland powers.

It'd be interesting if, say, the Japanese had bottlenecked how Baizou could interact with the mainland powers.

If you've asked before, I can't remember now—or no, I sort of remember. You asked in the Baizou Q&A if Baizou leaned more to Japan or China, but my answer dwelt a lot on postwar culture and politics instead of early modern. So it's a very good question!

I don't think Japan strictly controlled Baizou's relationship with other powers, but I do think Baizou tended to experience the rest of East Asia through Japan's indirect mediation. Japan is much closer to Baizou than the mainland is, so it came to be more convenient to engage in contact and exchange with their language-sharing neighbor and to experience Asia through the archipelago, rather than leapfrog Japan and have ties directly with the mainland.

I like to think the Hongwu Emperor was an exception to this. His willingness to reach out to comparatively peripheral states, including Tibet and the Jurchen, suggests to me he'd even go as far as to reach out to Baizou and give some advice and start some dialogue. This was a bit of a surprise to Baizou, who up to that point had been content to be a power in Japan's shadow. To be regarded almost as if it were Japan's equal (insofar as the Hongwu Emperor contacted them separately) was a curious development!

But this was more an interesting episode than anything and didn't quite last. As later regimes become increasingly preoccupied with stabilizing China internally, Baizou falls back into the comfortable "shadow" of Japan where some mainland societies even assume or regard it as if it were some extension of Japan (the same way centuries earlier the Wei had broadly ascribed the entire Japanese archipelago to Queen Himiko).

That perception don't change much until the colonial era, when Tokugawa Japan institutes isolation policies while Baizou doesn't, starkly demarcating the island shogunate from the island kingdom. Unfortunately, Baizou's market was still too small to make enough difference, so Ming society still suffered from currency scarcity, and in another generation the English White Elephant Company tied up Baizou's economy anyway.

There was still some exchange and contact outside official channels, naturally. Baizoan Buddhist monks made pilgrimages to the mainland, just as Japanese Buddhist monks did, as one example. And it'd be unrealistic to claim no trade happened—I just think more was done with Japan as a matter of simplicity, convenience, and positive diplomatic relations. Just as Korea had sadae ("serving the great") with China, I think sometimes the Japanese or Baizou states liked to think of themselves as having a similar relationship (which is a feelsgood for Japan, which since the inception of the emperor had liked to regard itself as a fellow "Child of Heaven" to China; and it's healthy for Baizou, which gets to feel secure against military dangers (such as the Qing and Mongols in an earlier generation, not that the typhoons ever let them get that far; or even Japan itself, which is disincentivized from military conquest when the existing relationship is already plenty advantageous and convenient).

/skipme, ask Kiu Ghesik.

you maniacs! you blew it all to hell!

2) Am I right in thinking the Jericho bros are better than other robots just because they're more versatile in design? They seem to basically be "infantry grunts, but made out of s u p e r i o r steel as opposed to weak, pathetic biomass, praise the Machine God!"

"Ooh, I can answer these ones!

1. The Belt suffers from Balkanization, being that they are made up of every Ethnic and Religious group that you can imagine and some of them that were quite literally imagined. The Belt Colonies didn't get along at the best of times, and confederating them to pool their combined militaries only served to give disparate powers time to size each other up.

Also Space Pirates and NATO Sabotage.

2. China and its Eastern Allies had the largest presence both in space and on Earth, Chinese Interests and Groups made up nearly 42% of all Space Assets from Mars to the Belt, to the Moons of Jupiter. Luna was the only Space Asset that was predominantly West aligned.

The problem being? Only it's Martian Allies had a functional navy that could act offensively. Most of its other assets were only able to maintain small navies to protect themselves from Pirates and from their neighbors. For most of the early years of the War; China spent its time paying smugglers to arm its assets while paying off NATO Official's to look the other way, or having troublesome orbital bases suffer "accidents".

China's fleet was not heavily armed like the NATO fleet, but they maintained significantly faster engines on average (if we measured the fastest ship the Chinese maintained compared to the NATO fleet, NATO wins but an army moves as fast as their slowest ship, not their fastest) and much larger access to space thanks to how many friendlies in Mars and the Belt there were.

3. Ceres... if it didn't want to get hit by an 800 mm Tungsten-Nickel Rod moving at the speed of light... it shouldn't have been such a provocative target!

4. If this were a test you would get partial credit! but I would give you full credit considering I haven't covered the whole subject yet.

Thanks to their Nanite Flesh, Jericho's can be modified to utilize just about any equipment you could want them to use.

The other thing I haven't covered yet is the ability of Jericho's to share information with each other instantaneously, to learn from that information and adapt it to their pre-existing skill set, they can learn and develop strategies and tactics on the field and off the field, they'll develop those strategies in real-time and adapt them to situations to other allied Jericho's on a completely different battlefield.

TL;DR: They learn really fast. They can share what they learn with their allies instantly. They can use what they learn instantly. They can modify what they learn just a little less quickly.

Finally, it's the price tag. They are valued at a third of the price of their nearest competitor. So you have a machine that is tough enough to take the punches, adaptive enough to fit any theatre of combat from police work to urban warfare to the vacuum of space, and cheap enough that you can outfit an army pretty quickly.

Their only major downside is that they take a little longer to build. Nearest Competitor can have 100,000 of their drones ready in as little as 2 - 3 month's where it takes 4 - 5 months for the same amount of Jericho's.

Hamatu! What, if any, IRL gods/goddesses inspired Ilitu?

I'd say a pretty small amount, I'd say the various evolutions and syncretisms of Inanna (that'd be Ishtar, Astarte and Aphrodite to name most of the most famous) were the primary divine influence, though I'd say the way Ereshkigal is written in what's left of her stuff also works as a seriously surprising degree of humanizing, especially for a Mesopotamian deity. In addition, to put somewhat of a more modern spin on the question, more recent portrayals of Hades and Persephone, as well as a few other godly characters being reintroduced into media, served as inspiration for Ilitu's more relatable characteristics, I'd say.

2) Yeah! Shinji is fucking awesome. For part 2 of that question, who's Mayumi? If she's from the Rebuild movies, then does that mean they are different? I've only watched part of the first and it was just the same thing with modern (see: ugly) graphics and a few nods to End of Evangelion. And, last but not least, I agree with you. Shinji/Asuka is kinda weird and Shinji/Rei (which I've unfortunately seen) is literally

1) So, what animal is the most feared by the Ghes? Is it some kind of rodent or parasite that affects pastoralists?
2) Would the Ghesites be thalassophobic if they ever come into contact with an ocean?
3) Would the Ghesites use bronze vessels or clay-based ceramics? It may seem trivial but it's probably gonna go a long way in the way the archaeological record presents timelines.

I'll save those questions for later...

1)Considering it's an XB-30; not a single individual but a group of several Shinahari Heavy Industries design experts and executives contracted by the military who knew fully well they wanted to bomb Germany into the middle ages so they could get back to making trans-Atlantic flights and contracting planes. As the civilian version was pressurized and had a long range, they knew that the plane would sell like hot cakes to airline companies after the War and give LP an edge in the aerospace industry and bauxite mining companies that kept the nation from economically stagnating.
2) She does?! I'm rather disappointed with myself if that's the case.
3) No, you're correct, I haven't expanded on my world history. Italy and it's clients have been mellowing out gradually, transforming into a run-of-the-mill authoritarian dictatorship similar to the Portuguese Estado Novo. The discovery of oil in Libya and the need to exploit it through mining technology has led Italy to be forced to seek aid from Free Europe and both blocks heavily mistrust the Soviet Union...but Italy still isn't willing to liberalize and they'd take the Entente's colonies and stab them in the face or the back if given the chance and if Italy thinks it can get away with it.
4) Intriguing question. /SKIP ME

1. See space weed Palisade and M22 for that. I think that going to space will be rather, erm, not good for our current mode of society- the fact that we'll likely need a directing agency or funding state to get people there in reasonable quantities to stay to begin with coupled with the fact that any spacefaring system is going to need machinery to maintain life that's going to be maintained is going to invite really hard authoritarianism. After all, everyone's going to need to know their job (at least at first), wear lots of hats, and operate under a central direction to ensure every task gets done and the habitat doesn't die. That kind of mandates an authoritarian central government, imo. While those early pressures will die off I'm kind of concerned that a theoretical spacefaring society would have a precedent set to tend towards those authoritarian, hierarchal systems that would by necessity need to be rather decentralized nonetheless- hence the colbureau and the "paperwork state". Space weed represents a sort of worst-case scenario- any form of democracy is disdained and among spacefaring society a sort of "keep your head down, trust that the system will do its job to keep you alive" mentality will prevail- a mentality that in the worst-case scenario leads to exploitation and a system that definitively doesn't do its best at such a thing.
2. I thought it was a really nice site for doing creative writing, and I was honestly kind of awed by all of it. Now I think it's a really nice site for doing creative writing- which I hope I'm much better at than I was when I started- and for doing cool design stuff, as well as a place where a lot of good friends hang about, and I wouldn't trade you guys for anything, really. I will say that my perception of what my accepted etiquette should be has grown a bit lower in recent days as I've gotten more frustrated with low-effort posters and decided that kindness should probably take a backseat to bluntness in a number of situations. Not with you guys, though; you guys are friends.
3. I get new ideas on a daily basis, but I only act on those maybe... once every month and a half is the average at this point, I think. And yes, that means I'm due for a new idea- I won't tell y'all what it is, though know that it's definitely going to be created once I plan it out some more. And figure out how to manage my other nations alongside it.

Do the credits roll and that's it for this account, or do you intend to RP whatever happens after that? (Assuming you've even planned or written that far ahead, of course.)

I'm probably not advancing the timeline to that point. It wouldn't be fun to see them conquered and subsumed over the course of several hundred years, or rather to be slowly assimilated over nearly a thousand by their closest trading bros, which is what is more likely to happen. We're going to be staying with smol Ari for as long as there's still lore to flesh out, and I'll be maintaining this nation as long as I can after that.

...fine, LP, I won't answer the interesting archaeological questions. It's not like I wanted to or anything... :p

yed :}

1. What would you say is your biggest struggle when writing factbooks? Similarly, what was your biggest struggle when coming up with the character Ari?
2. Sorry if this is just a variant of the 'What's your inspiration' question, but if you were to make another nation set during the time period, what would you make?
3. Was 'it' being 'and' in Ghesite vocabulary intentionally kinda silly or am I just a massive bully?
4. Did you draw the skymother? It's pretty sweet!

1. With factbooks, coming up with an organizational scheme; once I've blocked out the blanks to fill in I can do that rather quickly, but I'm horrid at planning ahead. With Ari it was making her less of an extremist ideologue- in my notes she's changed from someone who dislikes "thu sedentarys!11!1!!" to someone who just hates the Berghi, and while that change has made it into her factbook it hasn't really fully gotten onto the site. It's really not a realistic perspective for someone ICly to have then since that perspective depends on more of a knowledge of the broad scope of history, and I'm much happier with what's replaced it- an incorrect interpretation of her father's ideology and a narrower understanding of her people's situation. I'm also much happier with how her character has become more personable as a result- instead of her frothing at the mouth at the sight of houses I can write her as I like her to be, a friendly if biting person unable to cope effectively with the burden placed upon her for the majority of her life, and really just happy to get a chance to relax. Essentially she's evolved from "revolutionary polsci major" to "overworked engineering student beer bro but with estrogen" who happens to kill people instead of perform complex math for a living. She's barely past being a teenager, really, and the way her character is planned to change to and to some extent is now reflects that much better than how she was at first, I feel.
2. Well, I suppose the Berghi factbook is a bit of an answer to that question, in a sense. If I were to make another, though, I'd prefer to make something like the Natives at Cahokia and the mound-builders, as those really unexplored cultures who lack very much in the way of a conventional archaeological record have always interested me.
3. Yep, that's one of a couple of Easter eggs in there. I won't make "and" "it" but I considered it. also words like that tend to be a selection of very short sounds and as such they tend to overlap eventually, and I did that as a nod to that matter.
4. Nope, Terra Britania did. His simping finally produced something tangible, and I wrote a literal sermon in response. Though if I ask really nicely maybe LP will make their own take on Mummy Tengri as well.

"Alright, let's do this! Your daily dose of me picking at your military begins now!

I understand that Wexan Commanders are considered the Best in the World, how are they evaluated? What process and training do they undergo to acquire such a moniker?

They also act as mercenaries to other powers yes? What are the profits like? Do you take into consideration the current position of the nation requesting aid? whether or not the nation is currently on the back end of a conflict?

Are your mercenaries allowed to serve nations they are ideologically opposed to, but politically neutral with? are there discounts for nations you are ideologically aligned with?

Has Wexas considered developing a standing professional army?"

1. For the record, I am probably going to retcon the 'best in the world' bit. However, the answer is that its complicated. There are tests in place, AKA Medieval War Games, that are often used by the King to get accepted into his folds. However, only those who have proven themselves on the battlefield get to move up in the ranks. This is surprisingly not a problem in Wexas, at at least once a month, pirates, angry nomads, or angry nomadic pirates attack Wexas, and at least once a year those raids call for the military to intervene. Similarly, many Wexan commanders often sell their services to other nations- not just to get money, but also to prove their own worth.

2. Speaking of mercenaries, the answer to that is 'not alot'. The majority of commanders are considered mercenaries because they are willing to win at all costs. However, there is a caveat, at all costs. Wexan Generals are finicky like that. While some might devise a strategy to destroy an enemy army while only losing a few of their own, others will relentlessly charge their armies at the enemy as if manpower is unlimited. And for the record, their skills are normally the deciding factor here, as they often only bring a small contingent of their own soldiers to fight with and will hire or even conscript locals to fight for them. As for consideration, commanders act on their own free will if they're looking for work. Some purposefully seek out easy victories for guaranteed pay, others seek out struggling/losing sides out of honor or for better pay. Some believe selling war is a moral evil even and refuse to do fight altogether unless it's by the orders of the King. As such, it would depend on the individual. However, you can imagine those who do resort to mercenary work will generally go for the lowest-risk highest-reward first, then low-risk low-reward next, high-risk high-reward, and almost entirely opt-out of high-risk low-reward unless they have personal ties to the high-risk side.

3. Technically speaking, there is no such thing as an ideologically-opposing nation in the Wexasverse as an ideology has really devolved down to 'which is better, elected dictator or hereditary dictator', to which Wexas is okay with both. However, if hypothetically speaking there was a communist nation that wanted to eventually overthrow every entrenched nobility, the commanders would be barred from serving with them as it would basically be if a 3-star general made a PMC and worked for the USSR or China. It wouldn't blow over well with the Kings and Queens who decidedly want to keep their head.

4. No

All of this might be subject to change as I am only recently actually giving much thought to my military outside of 'angry southern horde mixed with cowboys'

Which technology on your technology page do you personally believe will be developed and widely used first? Did you attempt to make their levels (common, rare, development) realistic according to present day progress?

Sorry for only really asking food questions, lol.

Cinnamon isn't my favourite as the flavour tends to be too strong for me, but I won't refuse to eat anything because it has cinnamon. As for pretzels, I don't really like them very much since their salt is spread unevenly and the texture is a little odd. I rarely drink coffee due to bitterness except for Frappuccino or latte, although maybe that doesn't really count as coffee at all.
And don't worry about asking me food questions, I don't mind at all ^^

Because I hate the idea of being forced to come to terms with the world around you as a boring adult and losing your childhood magic and memories, so I spared her the same fate. Also quite useful for having personalities who can inspire for generations.

Question for Azur: I think you were the one who asked the question in the "would you rather" thread about living in an artificial utopia or living in our mundane reality. Since then I've been curious: which would you choose?

Answer for Sanghyeok above:

Um... To be honest, I think I would be perfectly fine with the offer of being hooked up to an artificial utopia.
Just poke the needles in my brain and let me live a life of wonder.

Factbook completion will occur when hell freezes over and this nation is basically what happens at 3 AM when I overdose on Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Game of Thrones. Trans rights or you're getting kneecapped.
Center-right largely-absolute monarchy populated by the majority-pagan descendants of a mix of Vikings, Iron Age German rednecks and the odd shipwreck survivor coming into its own on the world stage during the final stages of a 32-year watershed moment under the watchful eye of an emperor who was never supposed to be one. Strict MT, current year though lore posts are generally asynchronous. Brettain is a catchall demonym, flag waifu by Polish Prussian Commonwealth, NS stats not canon.

To answer KG's question below:

Yo, that's actually pretty cool to find as an actual sport.
I have a soft spot for things like this. Like, I'm not a big racing or sports person, but I adore the idea of 'military'-themed sports.
One of my favorite concepts is mecha racing à la a game called Break Arts or the anime IGPX.

So, I have to ask, what's your opinion on the fact that this is a thing that exists in real life? Thought you might find it interesting, specifically the "tank waltz" part.

YES! FINALLY! So to say again:
1) What animal is the most feared by the Ghes? Is it some kind of rodent or parasite that affects pastoralists?
2) Would the Ghesites be thalassophobic if they ever come into contact with an ocean?
3) Would the Ghesites use bronze vessels or clay-based ceramics? It may seem trivial but it's probably gonna go a long way in the way the archaeological record presents timelines.
