Why..uh, did you make that nation of yours? What's its point? Is it just a vessel for your beliefs and political ideology?

Also, do you speak Arabic? Because you need to brush up.
An interstellar civilization that survived the self-induced destruction of its now long-gone homeworld and is trying to live the good life, all the while avoiding getting its ass kicked around.

It’s basically my political views, though once Mustafa and his family are no longer in charge, that might change. I also (at least in reference to RP), is meant to show how diverse the Islamic community is, including in thought.

Also, I’m semi-fluent in Egyptian Arabic, but... why specifically do I need to brush up?

Do you ever feel like some people here are unreceptive to criticism? They seem to take the blunter end of the stick rather badly, in my experience.

That's unfortunately been a trend that's been present throughout NS's history, although it seems to be more pronounced recently. You can sugarcoat the criticism as much as you want and people still don't want to improve because they think it's an attack on them or some dumb shit like that. There's a reason why I don't bother sounding nice if I even bother to give criticism. I prefer apologizing and being nicer to people who are receptive to criticism because I recognize that I can come off as a snarky ass. Just to note, I'm no master world builder or anything. There are many worldbuilders who are better than me but when people reject basic criticism, there's just no point in bothering with them anymore.

To be fair, those people who take criticism too personally might be relatively young...or they're just man/woman-children. Same thing lol.

Insaanistan wrote:Also, I’m semi-fluent in Egyptian Arabic, but... why specifically do I need to brush up?

What a coincidence, I'm fluent in Egyptian Arabic. As for what to brush up on? The romanization of Arabic and the grammer in your factbooks. They sound like they've been nabbed from Google Translate, no offense intended.

Yeah, writing in Arabic letters is better than Romanization, but typing it up is hard for me.

1. Prolly the earlier Chinese peoples tbh. There's just so much history there it's hard not to get into, and we see later historical events mirrored in stuff that went on in the 500s BCE for them. The breadth of ideology they covered was impressive.
1.5. Scythians. You expected me to say something else?
2. The Martian isn't a franchise, per se, but it's what got me into sci-fi and hard sci-fi particularly, and it's additionally a hella good read. So I'd say it. As an aside, for my two sci-fi NS nations specifically, one of them is an extrapolation of a previous worldbuilding project that grew into its own thing- namely, the ColAuth is essentially an idea I had about how colonization might be directed in an interstellar setting I'd already written- and the other one, Palisade, is an extrapolation of the ColAuth a couple hundred years after its inevitable collapse. So as odd as it is my own nations inspired my other nations.

- What is your favorite civilization as well? Yup, like ancient civilization, or even the modern ones.
- Any particularly part of human history that you really like? So some of you might know how much I gravitate towards WW1 and WW2 in terms of reading, along with SE Asian (or East Asia - China, Japan, Korea) history. For your case, any part that you really got engaged into?

- Favorite genre of games?

BN: Yep, I am fine now, sorry for the outburst. I suppose it was just lost in text.

Favorite Food? Hmm, gonna have to go with a cheesy pizza, or Chicken Biryani. Nothing makes my day more than a super delicious chicken biryani!

Favorite video game character, oooh boy. So in no particular order:
- Lena Tracer Oxton from Overwatch.
- Alucard from Castlevania series.
- Ada Wong, from Resident Evil. Jill Valentine comes close second.

Yup, it's between these three!

1. My single favorite civilization is probably the Neo-Assyrians. I would say the Neo-Babylonians- a lot of the most beautiful stuff comes from them, and they reached a level of sophistication which most of the previous ones hadn't-, but they barely lasted a century, or the Hittites, but while they're way underrated it wouldn't really be fair considering how little there still is on them. The Neo-Assyrians, while they definitely have their rough spots- and there's not much worse than being an apocalyptic enemy in the Bible- had a beautiful culture, the most developed native Mesopotamian culture would ever reach, and really show how the morals and opinions of ancient peoples can often seem completely alien to people alive today. I won't go into too much detail, but suffice to say, the story of the Neo-Assyrian Empire is way more interesting than most people give it credit for. (As for modern ones, I guess the Austro-Hungarians were really interesting, and I really like Franz Joseph's life story)
2. My favorite part of history has to be the Eastern Mediterranean Late Bronze Age & Early Iron Age. Both of those have my favorite civilizations and cultures, so I think there aren't really any other times that I like nearly as much. Though, for some reason, I always seem to set my NS nations in WWI, so I suppose I must have some interest in that period as well- I guess the fall of so many colonial powers, and the change in global dynamic it caused, is just interesting?
3. Paradox grand strategies and CRPGs, I really like playing through historical times (Honestly, w/ most grand strategies, I stop playing once the more modern eras hit, since I guess they get kinda boring), and I like creating characters and playing them- guess it just gives me that creative hit, sometimes. Other than those, I also really like interactive novels- not VNs, but like, CYOA books. I just like them, and a lot of them can tell really good stories. My favorite source of those is Choice of Games, they just have a lot of good stories in their forums that are free even if they aren't finished.

To Catsfern,
It can be read in my factbook, if a bit outdated. The flag is a cosmogram. The World is represented as black dash (Earth) surrounded by a blue circle (sea/sky )which was the known world being penetrated by sunlight (the red cross), the color of the latter and the last representing twilight and a mystical union of the material and spiritual world. The Home Land was also considered the center of the Universe, which is why it's surrounded by 4 Cardinal Points that are represented in Black (North/the Underworld), Blue (South/the Sky and Sea), Red (East/Sunrise) and Yellow (West/Sunset). It's mostly based on Nahua cosmology but similarly colored motifs exist in Puebloan and Navajo iconography, like the Male Shooting Chant drawings: fitting since Tohorin's flag resembles New Mexico's solar flag. IRL, it's debatable how these beliefs were formed or if they had to influence each-other, however it's generally understood the colors coincide with the varieties of corn.

Image

Coincidentally, the Cardinal Points are similar to Asian traditions, specifically China. And I like to tease over the possibility that the Tohorinese are Asian ICly...though this is an ethnological in-joke about outdated theories (like those proposed by the late Walter Krickeberg) that involved the Chinese in the Americas.

I really have a thing and likeness for Joy. She's the embodiment of Happiness! :3 Though of course, her flaw being that she's a very, very bossy character, but eventually, in that movie, she changed for the better.

I really just love her as a character. ♥

Eisenstern wrote:Am I misinterpreting your map, or do you have very few coastal cities despite being on an island?

What would you say is the most difficult time that you had with conceptualizing? Is it particularly a nation in general (i.e. you struggled a lot more with Auraverse compared to the others you might have), or some part of your world, be it military (bio-chem stuff), or characters?

Because it originally wasn't the hub - believe it or not, my factbooks used to be even more badly organized than they are now. The current hub was originally a hub for minor content only, and there was no overall hub. It was a stupid setup, and lacking in foresight.

Honestly, I can't think of anything specific. If you want something generally-applicable, it's any in-'verse system that is both unique-sounding and cohesive. Getting things like magic systems and geopolitical setups to flow nicely into each other and make sense and work, while also not outright ripping off existing systems and setups from other nations or works of fiction, can be an absolute nightmare.
