I mean, Kalashnikov-pattern rifles did not end with the AK-74. Modern versions exist, such as the AK-100 series, and the newer AK-12/AK-15 series. And that's just Kalashnikov-pattern rifles that actually come from Russia. The weapon has been copied by countless nations, with their own local variants. Not all of these copies are particularly modernized, of course, but some, like the RK 95 are suitably modern enough. Arguably, the Galil is itself just a heavily modified, modernized Kalashnikov.
There are modernized Kalashnikov-pattern rifles, at least in OTL.
