Because it's a tad bit loony to think the Mercator projection's proportions were purposeful and not the result of being the most convenient and simple flat map to make

Europe's not the proportional one though. All the landmasses closest/on the equator are proportional, while the ones farther away are stretched to be larger than they really are. IE, Africa/South America are proportionally sized for the most part while Antarctica/Europe/Northern Asia are stretched crazily big.
