Proverbs 31:8 “Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy.”

“The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” — Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Our Party

Welcome to the headquarters of the Democratic Party of Galatea. We are motivated by both our faith and our sense of moralityto stamp out injustice and inequality wherever it is found. We are a party of economic, social, and political justice. We believe in four freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression, including freedom of thought and association, the most fundamental of all rights in a democratic society. The second is freedom of religion, the right for every person to worship, or not worship, God in their own way. The third is freedom from want, which means economic opportunity and security, and encompasses the right to adequate healthcare. The fourth is freedom from fear, which translates not only to a free Galatea, but a free Europe and world. It is these freedoms that we will fight for without rest throughout Galatea.

Our Team

  1. Senator Joseph Sartori (Parliamentary Leader Collatis)
  2. Senator Eleni di Messina (Policy Spokesperson Nova Anglicana)
  3. Senator Alexis Gianopoulos/Anastasia Gianopoulos (Party Director Lamaredia)
  4. Senator Marinos Antonis (Galendia)
  5. Senator Giovanni Escalus Galatis (Chief Whip Tectonix)
  6. Senator Giacinto Sarti (West Leas Oros)
  7. Senator Eshan
  8. Tribune Claudia Pesaro (Malgrave)
  9. Senator Rhunnland
  10. You?

Our Platform

-Healthcare is a right, not a privilege for those wealthy enough to afford. We support a system of universal healthcare free at the point of use and financed by the national government. No one should have to forgo necessary medical care because they cannot afford treatment.

-Galatea must have respect for the right to life and the right to choose. We support legal abortion in the first 12 weeks of a pregnancy and only in cases of rape, incest, or danger to the life of the mother thereafter. We also support access to low-cost preventative contraception, but oppose abortifacients such as the “morning after pill.”

-Human dignity must mean dignity for all. We oppose discrimination by the government and employers on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

-Although we as a party acknowledge our Christian heritage and culture and are motivated by it to oppose injustice and oppression, we support religious freedom. All Galateans should be free to believe or not believe in any god or gods and not have their religious practices unduly burdened by the government.

-Galatea is strongest when we do not suppress our differences, but embrace them and try to understand our sisters and brothers. We support a pluralistic Galatean society where we celebrate the many people that call Galatea home and where all are accepted and are free to become the people God created them to be. All citizens should be valued and their needs heard and understood, regardless of age, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, creed, color, national origin, disability, culture or any other differences.

-We oppose the use of the death penalty as a means of punishment. Not only is it not an effective deterrent, but we oppose the taking of life. We also stand firmly against euthanasia or assisted suicide. We must protect the life and dignity of all.

-The family is the essential unit of society and must be supported. We support a system of child benefits to help parents pay for the costs of raising a child. Additionally, parents must have the ability to take time off to care for their children. We support paid parental leave for all parents. Families may be formed in any number of different ways, including adoption. We support the use of tax incentives and other policies to encourage adopting children.

-The Galatean justice system should uphold the dignity of all. We oppose excessively harsh sentences or the pretrial imprisonment of individuals solely for an inability to pay their bail. Low-level crimes should result in fines, community service, probation or other punishments rather than incarceration. Life in prison without the possibility of release should be the most severe punishment and should be used judicially. We oppose the irresponsible use of civil asset forfeiture and call for due process in such cases.

-The Galatean prison system should be an instrument of rehabilitation, not of retribution. The prison system should reduce the rate of recidivism. To that end, we support equitable treatment of prisoners and access to educational or vocational opportunities with the aim of making them productive members of society.

-The path to a good education for all Galateans starts early. We support a program of at least one year of universal public preschool available to all students.

-No child should go hungry at school for lack of money. Primary and secondary schools should provide two free, nutritious, meals per day to all students.

-Food waste is a problem in the developed world. We support a clear, consistent, and universal system of food labeling to make consumers aware of when food may be safely consumed. We support the use of tax credits or deductions to incentivise supermarkets and other businesses to donate food that may still be safely consumed. We support the legalisation of gleaning on farms.

-We are called to be responsible stewards of Creation. We support the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. Human activity has an undeniable effect on the climate of our planet and we should try to mitigate its effect. We support a carbon tax and urge the use of renewable energy whenever and wherever possible, with the goal of eventually using 100% renewable energy.

-Water is a necessity that should not be exploited for profit. The provision of water should be the responsibility of municipal governments and should be set at affordable rates. Other power utilities such as gas or electric should be closely regulated to prevent price-gouging and monetary assistance should be provided to those in poverty for whom paying these bills is an undue burden.

-No Galatean should go without shelter because of income. We support a combination of public housing and housing assistance for individuals and families in poverty.

-All Galateans, regardless of income or the part of the country where they live, should have access to affordable and effective public transportation. We encourage the national, provincial, and municipal governments to build and maintain a system of train, light rail, bus, or other modes of transportation.

-In order to protect the safety of all Galateans from gun violence, single-shot long guns should be the only legal firearms that may be owned by civilians.

-There is an inherent dignity in work that there is not in idleness. That dignity is undermined when workers are paid less than what they deserve or what they need to survive. We call for a living wage that ensures that no Galatean working a standard 40-hour work week will be unable to afford food, shelter, clothing, utilities, transport, and child care.

-We support equal pay for equal work. No Galatean should be paid less than another for doing the same work on the basis of sex, race, religion, disability, creed, national origin, sexual orientation, or gender identity.

-To whom much is given, from him much is expected. We support a system of progressive taxation that helps to address wealth inequality in Galatea and ensures that all individuals pay their fair share in proportion to the wealth they have.

-We decry the practice of charging outrageous interest on loans. Nothing traps people in the cycle of poverty like unjust loans, signed out of desperation, with interest rates that make them nearly impossible to pay back. We support a moderate cap on interest rates for all loans, especially short-term title loans or so-called “payday” loans.

-The dignity of work is undermined when business owners and their employees cannot bargain on an even footing. We support the organization and joining of unions and oppose provocative tactics used by either employers or employees that undermine that relationship. Just as Galatea is strongest when its citizens work together, a business is strongest when employers and employees work together for fair wages, working hours, working conditions, the maximization of productivity, and a reasonable profit.

-We support free trade as good for consumers and strengthening ties between nations. At the same time, we oppose exploitative trade practices and support fair treatment of workers and producers throughout the supply chain. We support retraining for workers who may lose their jobs in part due to trade and a system of wage insurance to supplement worker income if they are forced to take a lower-paying job as a result of trade.

-We believe in the classic Augustinian just war theory. Force must only be used in service of a righteous cause, with the correct intentions, in a manner that protects civilians, is proportionate, and only as a last resort. To that end, we favor diplomacy over the use of force. The armed forces of Galatea should only be used in self-defense unless extraordinary circumstances require it. The armed forces of Galatea should be subject to the civilian government, to prevent another junta like the horror we have just emerged from.

-Just as we have a responsibility to care for the least of these in our own society, we have a responsibility as a developed and European country to aid those outside our borders. We call for foreign aid spending of at least the OECD average, with the goal of achieving 0.7% of gross national income when possible.

-Galatea is stronger when it works with other countries and not just on its own. We cannot solve all of the world’s problems by ourselves. We must work with other countries for the collective security and prosperity of all. To that end, we support Galatea’s membership in the United Nations.

-Galatea can only prosper when we seek closer ties with like-minded countries. Our regard for human rights and freedoms and our desire to bring prosperity to all citizens of our great nation must lead us to join the European Union.

-Galatea is part of the Western world and committed to the collective security of Western nations. We support Galatea’s accession into NATO as part of a sound security policy.

-We are called to welcome the stranger and aid the immigrant, and we support the immigration of refugees and asylum seekers as well as immigrants skilled in areas we lack. At the same time, a nation is only as strong as the bonds between its people. The Democratic Party is committed to a Galatea where immigrants can smoothly integrate into society. We reject ghettoization and discrimination against immigrants. We call for education to help immigrants learn one or more of the major languages of Galatea, employment opportunities for immigrants, and access to higher education for those that desire it.

A general platform will be up very soon! For anyone interested, the Democratic Party is a center-left social democratic party motivated by Christian social teachings. We are decidedly left-leaning, encompassing members who want to temper capitalism’s extremes, along with members who advocate for a peaceful transition to socialism.

Just a few suggestions:

-Single-payer universal healthcare
-Progressive taxation (more steep than moderate)
-Moderate pro-life or free vote on abortion
-Moderate or free vote on LGBTQ issues
-Anti-death penalty and euthanasia
-Anti-usury
-Pro-immigrant, possibly also pro-assimilation
-Child benefits
-Adoption assistance or tax credit
-Pro-contraception (though not abortifacients) as a way to reduce abortions
-Paid parental leave
-Universal pre-K
-Free school lunch for those who need it (or everyone, depending)
-Anti-food waste, possibly compelling donations to food banks or incentivising it, gleaning also a possibility
-Pro-conservation and actively trying to mitigate climate change
-Possible incentives for parochial schools
-Either state-owned utilities or subsidized water/electric for poor individuals
-Public housing or housing assistance
-Strong public transportation
-Living wage
-Pro-union but for unions and businesses working together more than combatively
-Reform of criminal justice/prisons
-Diplomacy over military force
-Foreign aid or humanitarian assistance where possible
-Pro-UN and Pro-EU membership

Any or all of these suggestions can be thrown out, tweaked, or accepted. Just a few thoughts.
