Malgrave wrote:A question to all Senators;

- Is pineapple a suitable topping for pizza?
- Should our government align with Moscow, Washington, Beijing or take a more neutral approach to international affairs?

"Absolutely not. Pineapple and pizza are a terrible combination. Fruit on pizza was never a good idea in the first place-but pineapple has to be one of the worst of the choices that could be made even then. Still, I do believe that the people have the right to create such a miserable concoction if they so wish, but it is most certainly not suitable."

"I am strongly opposed to dealing with the Communists in Beijing-that ideology has caused a great deal of pain and destruction here in our own beloved nation, and it has killed tens of millions worldwide. Moscow I would think as somewhat better, and Washington perhaps a better choice still before the election of their new President, who I believe wholly unqualified for the position. Regardless of the relative merits of the three, I firmly believe in charting a neutral course, one that puts Fernão first. We have no place tying ourselves up in international power struggles or foreign military interventions. Our primary focus should be on our homeland, and dealing with the issues here. I believe in friendship to all nations-but not in entangling ourselves with any."

Catarina Peixeiro - Luta Operária

Account Name: Bogdanov Vishniac
Occupation: Senator, activist, organizer

Party Position(s):
*ADD POSITIONS WITHIN YOUR PARTY*

Positions in Government:
Senator, party member

Constituency: Campo Verde
Political Ideology: Luxemburgism

Family: N/A
Background: Born May 8 1962 as the only child of Maria and Agosto Peixeiro, two smallhold farmers in the southwest of the Main Island, Catarina grew up closely tied to the lands and people of her rural community. Her parents were local organizers on the part of the mestiço community, fighting against the interests of the large landowners that dominated (and still dominate) the hinterland of Fernão. Representatives from Fernão's urban communist movement visited Catarina's home town in the late 60's, and her family was brought into the fold soon after. Catarina grew up immersed in the passionate and fractious world of Fernãoese leftist politics, and naturally gravitated towards her parents' dynamic blend of populism and Marxist fervour.

The outbreak of civil unrest in the 70's lead her parents to send her off to a local Jesuit-run school to complete her primary and secondary education, and she graduated just in time for the outbreak of civil conflict in the early 80's. At the age of 18 she joined a militia unit operating in the countryside but after three years of service she was convinced by her parents to instead apply for admission at an agricultural college. This proved fortuitous as her unit was wiped out in a massacre lead by pro-government forces a few months later - a fact that she would never forget. She graduated with a degree in horticulture four years afterward and moved to the suburbs of [city to be determined], where she helped established a series of urban farming collectives and workers' dormitories to help house and feed the masses of people that moved to the cities as war ravaged the countryside.

When civil war again loomed in 1994 she was thrust to the political forefront, organizing a peoples' militia in the suburbs of Campo Verde that aligned with the orthodox Marxist contingent of the broader communist coalition and later Luta Operária. Her forces were successfully demobilized following the ceasefire in 2006, but took up arms once again when the peace agreement collapsed. The final peace of 2014 saw her militia putdown their arms again, but remained organized - years of hard-fought struggle had taught her how fragile peace on Fernão could be. When the first elections of the new Republic of Fernão were carried out, the people of Campo Verde voted by a significant margin to give their longtime champion a seat in the Senate. While the tenets of the 2014 peace agreement required her to formally resign her position as commander of the Campo Verde militia she retains very strong ties to the group and to the network of communes she established.

Faith: Syncretic Catholicism, lapsed

Likes: Strong coffee, land reform, land conservation, universal education, collectivized agriculture and industry
Dislikes: International capital, the planter class, Marxism-Leninism.

This is all provisional, since I can't actually find any firm history for Fernão anywhere. Please let me know if there are any issues.

Background: Iyasu Isaias Mengistu was born on the seventeenth of May, 1975, to parents that had originally been working-class dockworkers before forming a local Dockworkers Union and becoming active leaders in the Revolution of the 1970s; his father, Isaias Mengistu Kidane, was eventually appointed head to the Port of Wukro, a large city in southern New Guernsey whose economy was largely reliant on its port. In 1982 Mengistu and his family were forced to flee as a result of the coup d'état orchestrated by the CIA. Initially fleeing to Ethiopia, his family later emigrated to the Soviet Union in 1984. Throughout his youth, Mengistu considered himself to be a Marxist-Leninist, having been taught Marxist-Leninist thought from an early age. Mengistu was considered to be a very bright child growing up, academically excelled in school and fervently participated in the Little Octobrists, Young Pioneers and the Konsomol, motivated by his then-firm Marxist-Leninist ideology. Mengistu and his family, however, were distraught at what they saw as the Revisionist policies of Mikhail Gorbachev, and strongly supported the 1991 Soviet coup d'état attempt against Gorbachev. After the disastrous failure of the attempt, Mengistu and his family fled to India. In India, Mengistu slipped into depression due to what he saw as the ultimate triumph of imperialism and capitalism in the world following the fall of the USSR, and turned to various hedonistic practices to self-medicate this depression, most notably heavy drinking, amongst other behaviors.

The outbreak of the Civil War in 1994 greatly affected the young Mengistu, who desired to travel to his homeland and fight for the revolutionary cause, seeing it as an opportunity to build socialism in Fernão and fight the imperialist forces that he believed were occupying his homeland. Unbeknownst to the dictatorship and with the full support of his family, Mengistu returned to Fernão to foment revolution and joined a revolutionary militia that was ideologically aligned to communism. Proving himself to be an apt military commander, Mengistu captured Wukro and used his position to strengthen the leftist element of revolutionary forces and increase his own personal power within revolutionary forces. Mengistu was not hesitant to use brutal tactics to achieve his goals, including assassination, kidnappings, and blackmail, publicly stating and believing that such tactics were justifiable as they increased the likelihood of victory for revolutionary socialist forces. These tactics proved to be highly effective, and Mengistu was eventually named the Commander-in-Chief of the Revolutionary Fernãoense Army, with that organization serving as the sole major socialist army in the Fernãoense Civil War and a major belligerent in the Civil War.

Mengistu eventually declared a "Fernãoense Socialist Republic" in 1999 that controlled a series of discontiguous areas throughout Fernão, most notably controlling all of the southern islands of New Guernsey. As Mengistu was a Marxist-Leninist at the time, he implemented a total nationalisation of all industry and commerce while imposing a totalitarian, autocratic regime, outlawing opposition to his regime and summarily and publicly executing his enemies. However, Mengistu remained extremely popular for implementing land reform (notably banning all rents, granting tenant farmers and sharecroppers de facto ownership of land although they were unable to sell said land as it technically owned by the Government, and mutualising all agricultural businesses into collective farms), redistributing all wealth from the European elite to the working class, engaging in mass literacy campaigns, and granting record healthcare access in southern New Guernsey. Mengistu also outlawed female genital mutilation and marital rape, which were popular with women but drew opposition from many. Mengistu also briefly outlawed circumcision from 2003 to 2005 (which he labelled "male genital mutilation"), but this practice drew immense opposition from all swathes of the Fernãoense population and was soon abandoned. Mengistu was greatly affected by the failure of the Shining Path to conquer Peru, and consequently did not implement policies that they did, such as their immense cultural conservatism, disrespect for indigenous culture, or public brutality for even minor offences. Mengistu instead presided over a liberalisation of laws under his tenure, notably legalising same-sex marriage, polygamy (a practice long-observed by many Africans and Muslims in Fernão, but long prohibited since the institution of colonialism), and numerous drugs whilst banning no cultural practices outside of FGM and temporarily circumcision. These practices won him favour amongst many, but much of this liberalisation could instead be attributed by Mengistu's own participation in much of these practices. Mengistu has notably practiced polygamy himself (having married numerous, progressively younger women) and continued to heavily drink.

The FSR remained highly militarily successful in the early 2000s, expanding up New Guernsey and conquering other areas. The military forces of the FSR, the Armed Forces of the Fernãoense Socialist Republic (AFFSR) were largely funded by using military equipment taken from the retreating forces of the dictatorship, internal taxation, looting the homes of rich Fernãoense residing in territories captured by the FSRR and most notably growing Qat and exporting it to nearby nations. As in other nations near the Gulf of Aden, Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen, Qat was very popular in the areas the Fernãoense Socialist Republic controlled, but extremely high rates of rainfall compared to those nations, particularly Yemen, meant that the drug was considerably easier and cheaper to grow in Fernão than in other nations near the Gulf of Aden. This consequently led to Mengistu directing the mass production and export of Qat to Yemen, Ethiopia and Somalia at lower prices than those typically sold there, which led to massive profits for the FSR, which was consequently used to buy high-quality arms from smugglers and success for the AFFSR on the battlefield. In the early 2000s, the FSR was recognized as the legitimate government of Fernão by Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, Zimbabwe, Syria, and before the 2003 invasion Iraq. Mengistu recognized the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, South Ossetia, Transnistria, Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, and Somaliland, all of which recognized the FSR as the legitimate government of Fernão.

Throughout his tenure as a military commander, Mengistu read the works of Karl Kautsky, Rosa Luxemburg, Leon Trotsky and various Council Communist philosophers and became increasingly receptive to Orthodox Marxist thought, eventually considering himself an Orthodox Marxist and joining Luta Operária in 2005. Recognising his immense power and ability to control the ideology of much of the Fernãoense far-left, Mengistu organised internal purges of Marxist-Leninist officers in 2005 and 2006, summarily executing them and replacing all them with officers personally loyal to him and eventually promulgated a new Constitution of the FSR that reflected Council Communist principles in 2006, as the previous Constitution had reflected Marxist-Leninist thought. These actions were internally popular and successful as they led to greater political freedoms, but led to Cuba and North Korea ceasing recognition of the FSR. Taking advantage of the 2006 ceasefire, Mengistu quickly implemented these principles by establishing a set of workers' councils to whom he promptly transferred economic control to, while remaining the leader of the national state apparatus (albeit with the support of the populace and the workers' councils). Mengistu took advantage of the end of the ceasefire by launching a major offensive very shortly after the talks broke down; the AFFSR remained fully organized and armed as Mengistu intended to nominally abolish the AFFSR following peace talks but continue the Armed Forces as a paramilitary.

Participating in the negotiations that would lead to a new government, Mengistu formally dissolved the Armed Forces of the FSR but they remained organised as a paramilitary, the Fernãoense Peoples' Democratic Front, which he commands. The LO having emerged as the dominant communist party, in large part due to Mengistu tolerating no Marxist-Leninist opposition in the FSR and cementing the LO as the leading revolutionary socialist force, Mengistu was elected to New Guernsey's electoral list as he remained extremely popular in southern New Guernsey. Now an active participant in Fernãoense politics, Mengistu coauthored the Constitution, was elected for the Central Committee of Luta Operária, and was appointed Secretary of Health and Labour, although he did not run for reelection to the Central Committee. The Luta Operária was later dissolved and succeeded by the Communist Party of Fernão (notably directly affiliating itself with the FPDF as its official paramilitary), which was more ideologically revolutionary and libertarian socialist in nature, but retained the central ideology and characteristics of the LO. Mengistu has subsequently joined the Communist Party of Fernão.

Any Questions from the Public to be answered?
  • Have you ever heard of birth control? - I will not use this birth control meant as the instrument of genocide of the peoples of Africa. It is clear that although there may be legitimate reasons for birth control, it is being systematically spread over Africa to prevent further procreation and as such the training of a new generation of proletarian revolutionaries. You denounce my procreation habits with your racist, bourgeois nationalist and imperialist dog-whistles, but I will continue to have children to create a new generation of proletarian revolutionaries!
  • Should our government align with Moscow, Washington, Beijing or take a more neutral approach to international affairs? - I firmly denounce the imperialism of all three major powers. Washington is surely the most threatening of these powers and is the most keen on imposing neocolonialist domination on Fernão, but Moscow and Beijing are all clearly imperialistic as well. All three major powers represent capitalism, despite the claims of the Chinese to adhere to Marxism - even though they claim to follow Lenin instead of Kautsky, the truest Marxist, they do not even follow Lenin as they have totally embraced capitalism. As such, I support Fernão taking a neutral approach to international affairs, standing in solidarity with authentically socialist nations in the spirit of Proletarian internationalism while attempting to forge closer relations with India, as a regional power that is at least somewhat less imperialistic than the three greatest powers.

Background: Acerton was, originally, an English colony, built around a Puritan settlement, and the first major English one on the western continent. The community grew slowly over the colonial age, but its excellent natural harbor soon led to it becoming a trade hub on the eastern coast, with merchants and entrepreneurs moving in. Trade and transit between the western and eastern mainlands mostly moved through Acerton, the prosperity being a mixed blessing to some of the descendants of the Puritan settlers who doubted the influx.

When the war came, Acerton was a valuable target, both for its strategic location and wealth, and for the Alderman Arms factories producing weaponry-sold to both sides through most of the early war. Hired mercenaries of the Adlermans protected the factories and the city as a whole, and while not unscarred, by the time of the peace deal the city had weathered the civil war in excellent shape, and came out as the most populous city on the western mainland. The city is currently represented by Senator Aiden Alderman, also the owner of the city's largest employer, Alderman Arms.

Where must we go, we who wander this wasteland, in search for our better selves?
In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,

Positions in Government:
Senator

Constituency: 128
Political Ideology: Moderate (Centre-Right), Globalist, and Social Catholicism

Family: Thomas Sanchez (Father, b. April 9, 1949); Beatrice Sanchez (Mother, b. July 21, 1952); Anna Sanchez (Spouse, b. January 7, 1972); Raul Sanchez Jr. (Son, b. December 17, 1993); Samantha Sanchez (Daughter, b. October 30, 1996)
Background: Born on December 4, 1973, Raul grew up in a lower-end middle-class family. Raul's father, Thomas, was a firefighter and an ambulance driver until he retired at the age of 65; his mother, Beatrice, has been a janitor at a local hospital since 1979 - still working there to this day. Raul is an intelligent man, but he struggled during his college years after battling depression from extensive disputes with his parents, substance abuse, a rough breakup with his then-girlfriend, and a difficult time maintaining friends. He eventually dropped out of college and started working at the age of 20, although his struggles continued as he went through seven different jobs in a matter of two years. By the time he turned 23, Raul joined the army where he seemed to have finally flourished. Raul, with good company to keep his spirits up and to help him in his addictions, quickly elevated through the ranks and achieved the rank of captain at the age of 39, and in a matter of sixteen years. Raul converted to Roman Catholicism during an active deployment in his military career.

Raul had retired from active duty, but has since registered himself to be a part of the Fernãoese National Guard where he still maintains his enlistment to this day. Following his retirement, Raul worked at a bakery for two years. He wrote his first book during his time at the bakery, focusing on leadership and overcoming challenges, which became an instant best-seller, and decided to focus on writing from that point onward. Raul left the bakery and wrote a few more books, the last two focusing on political and social commentary. By the age of 41, Raul had become a relatively well-known individual across Fernão, and had decided to run for public office with the promise of implementing many of the changes that he argued for in his books. After a rigorous campaign, he was elected into the Senate at age 42.

Any Questions from the Public to be answered?
  • Is pineapple a suitable topping for pizza?
"No. Pineapple on pizza is practically a heresy. Why would anyone ruin a perfectly fine slice of pizza with such a thing?"
  • Should our government align with Moscow, Washington, Beijing or take a more neutral approach to international affairs?
"I believe that we ought to approach our international relations with a more nuanced view of the world than just simply an either/or outlook. I believe that we, as a nation, share much in common with the values of the United States, but I also believe that we have potential for partnerships with the Chinese and the Russians as well. I think, to put it simply, we ought to build our relationships with as many nations across the globe as possible. Having strong relations with all three could bring tremendous economic benefits to the people of Fernão. The answer is not so much to pursue neutrality, but rather to pursue stronger ties with as many sovereign nations across the planet. I believe that we have an opportunity to make an incredible impact in international relations, and to possibly become a major power on the world stage. Let's be responsible with that role."
  • What will you do about the growing conspiracies theories that the Earth is round and that climate change is real?
"I honestly can't tell whether or not that is a serious question. The Earth is round, deal with it. As for climate change, I highly doubt that the overwhelming majority of scientists across the globe who unanimously agree that climate change is real and is a threat to our world are conspiracy theorists. To those who suggest otherwise, I know a great place to buy tin foil in bulk."

Shijavikilajagahr

Account Name: Transoxthraxia.
Elected Representative: Dr. S.R. Mishra.

Population: 18,736.
Ethnic Composition:
  • Indian: 84%
  • European: 7%
  • Jewish: 6%
  • Arab: 2%
  • African: 1%

Background: Shijavikilajagahr began its history in the early first centuries CE, when a large community of Indian merchants began permanently living in a walled community in the natural harbour that is Shijavikilajagahr in order to permanently trade with the natives of the island, but also to ensure protection from the more violent tribes that populated the island. A social hierarchy formed, and eventually the city became a wealthy city-state under a despotic hereditary Raj. At different times, the city-state was under the suzerainty of the Gupta Empire, the First Chalukya Dynasty, and then the Rashtrakuta Dynasty, before finally becoming an independent state following the collapse of the latter's political power in the tenth century. From then, the settlement's Raj was the sole ruler and law-maker for the city, which flourished as an important trade node in its strategic position. In the eleventh and twelfth centuries, Muslim attempts at the conquest of the city were met with abject failure, resulting in the eventual expulsion of all Arab or Muslim populations within the city, though the Raj of Shivajikilajagahr later accepted the suzerainty of the Bahmani Sultanate in 1433, shortly after their defeat of the Vijayanagar Empire. The policy, however, was unpopular, and the Raj of the time was then overthrown by the wealthy and powerful Vaisyas Castes. Shivajikilajagahr, along with a number of African and Arabian cities on the island of Fernão, was one of the many points of visitation for the Portuguese in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. During this period, Raj Sambhaji II built the Great Fortress of Shivaji to guard against potential invaders; the fort was later built up by Sambhaji II's successor, who was popular with the merchant classes that provided the funds for the fort's expansion. During the period of increasing Portuguese influence in the whole of Fernão, Shivajikilajagahr banned any Portuguese merchants from entering the city's harbours. Both the Portuguese and the influential Vaisyas Caste were outraged. Supported by the Portuguese, the Vaisyas Caste's leading citizens performed a coup against the centuries-old Raj and established a short-lived merchant's republic in the city. The Vaisyas Republic then exiled the Raj and his family to the Indian mainland. However, the Vaisyas' Republic was immediately unpopular among a number of different groups, including the sizable portion of Nasrani Christians who lived within the city, who were not represented economically or socially by the Vaisyas, and were publicly discriminated against. The Republic lost the support of the Portuguese when they jailed a pair of Portuguese missionaries working within the city. The exiled Raj then garnered support from within the Vijayanagara Empire and launched an invasion of the city state. With the troops of the fortress of Shivaji unwilling to protect the discriminatory leaders of the Republic, the Vaisyas' leading citizens turned to the Portuguese for protection, promising annexation in return for support against the invading Raj. The Portuguese were able to defeat the Raj's forces and relieved the native garrison of the trading city. After a rebellion by the Hindu population some years after Portuguese annexation, the city was nearly burned to the ground by a retaliatory Portugal. From then on, the city was forcefully integrated into the administration of a united Fernão, and its history is directly tied-in with the rest of the island's history.

Shivajikilajagahr is also, demographically, one of the largest homes to St. Thomas Christians, better known as Nasrani Christians, who date their heritage back to St. Thomas the Apostle, the original population hailing from the city of Kerala in South India. A number of dynasties of the Shivajikilajagahr Raj were Nasrani Christians, and prior to the Portuguese Conquest, records show that the Nasrani Christians not only constituted a "large minority", but could have been, numbers-wise, on equal footing with the Hindu population of the city.

Iyasu Isaias Mengistu is open for questions.
Collatis wrote:"A Not So Dashing Slav, Betabart news. Have you ever heard of birth control?"

"I will not use this birth control meant as the instrument of genocide of the peoples of Africa. It is clear that although there may be legitimate reasons for birth control, it is being systematically spread over Africa to prevent further procreation and as such the training of a new generation of proletarian revolutionaries. You denounce my procreation habits with your racist, bourgeois nationalist and imperialist dog-whistles, but I will continue to have children to create a new generation of proletarian revolutionaries!"

Background: Bomventos (meaning "good winds") was founded in 1692 by the Portuguese as a fortified port city which facilitated contact between Fernao and the Indian subcontinent, as well as other Portuguese possessions and trading posts in East Asia. The location was chosen for its natural harbour and good trade winds blowing off the Indian Ocean. As the city developed, it became one of the leading leisure retreats for the Portuguese colonial elite. As part of the Portuguese colonial empire, the city became a base for Portuguese naval assets until replaced by the British in the late 18th century when British control over the Indian Ocean was cemented. However, Bomventos, as well as most of the southeast, fiercely retained its Portuguese identity, hosting cultural events like Carnival as well as others. During the First and Second World Wars, the city served as an important naval base for the Royal Navy as well as the newly formed Navy of Fernao, patrolling the Indian Ocean for German and later, Japanese warships, submarines and merchant raiders. The city expanded with the post war economic growth enjoyed by Fernao as Europe rebuilt, with the city serving as a post-card holiday destination. The port expanded significantly as trade opened up with newly independent East Asian nations as well as the wider Pacific. The city still prospered under the socialist government but economic growth slowed. Following the 1982 coup, the city soon saw continued and sustained economic growth but also a massive rise in corruption and crime, which became worse after the breakout of the civil war in 1994. Despite this, the city remained largely untouched by the civil war. The election of Sílvio da Costa Oliveira in 2012 saw the fortunes of the city change substantially. da Costa launched an anti-corruption campaign as well as reorganized the municipal police force. Using careful investment regulations, the city's manufacturing base as well as it's port facilities and luxury developments grew and Bomventos once again became a holiday destination, despite the violence elsewhere. Today Bomventos remains one of the most important cities in Fernao as a tourist hub as well as an important manufacturing and logistics hub.
