"To be fair with José, he does see people as 'a hobby' and as 'playthings', but he cares about the quality of those 'playthings' so he does them as an end in themselves; and especially his much adored wife Tsuneko...it's not like he torments people. Not after a small stage in adolescence at least."

"Yeah, it was called the Free Republic of Ashkera. Heh, let that sink in for a moment.

Democratic government with a ruling council. Whole thing was monitored by sousveillance. Any citizen could tune in at any time to watch governance take place. Every vote was counted - every vote actually mattered. Relatively low taxes, privately-owned businesses (though the economy was a bit slow and inequality was higher than here), free speech held as the dearest and most sacred of values. Emigration was a bit difficult, though.

They never stood a chance.

They turned off Artifact 5. Nobody really believed there would be a full multiversal incursion, and nobody wanted to pay for the four gigawatts of power it takes to keep that thing on. You know it takes four full nuclear power stations just to keep that thing lit up? Well they weren't having it, so they got another tax break. And besides, the only thing they met before were friendly pony things. Didn't seem that threatening.

So you and me, here, we have to deal with a few attack teams popping here and there. The enemy has to come in waves. Takes too much energy to overcome the full power of Artifact 5. Even the Singaporeans can't afford that.

So that was their first really big mistake. Boom, whole army comes through at once, nothing to stop 'em.

Next mistake is they gutted spending on the army and weren't having a whole lot of training exercises. Ashkera's an island country - few powers in Unitatem are likely to invade - so they think they can skimp on defense spending and get away with it. Well, when you spend half as many Ashkeros as it costs to buy a tank, you get something worth less than half a tank.

So of course, if they don't want to pay for army bunkers, they don't want to pay for civilian bunkers, either. There are no 'primary evacuation procedures' or emergency drills. The economy runs on just-in-time delivery, so there's no emergency supplies except what civilians keep in their houses. There are no bomb shelters except for a few panic rooms and tonardo shelters built into some mansions and survivalists' homes. Clean water quickly becomes an issue.

Order breaks down. Now even if there was a plan to deal with the headcrabs - and our government had something similar already lined up and drilled for a zombie scenario - there's hardly anyone to enforce one, nor would enough of the population go along with it. Coordination in the military also goes to hell. There's nothing even remotely like ARCIS, just a pile of miscellaneous vendor-specific software that has low range and doesn't even cooperate with itself.

And even if they had a plan, it would be public, where any Singaporean could just go and download it off the internet, because they banned government secrets. Heh, they also even killed off all the wallabacks and then banned guns, like people have been asking for here for years.

They surrendered in five hours. We've been holding out for three days now and still control nearly all of the island.

Do you get why I'm in the Ashkeran National Assocation now, Jeffrey? They [the government] planned for this. They knew it was going to happen, or something like it. So they got ready. And people didn't like it, they complained 'why is the government buying a hundred thousand tons of Spam? whhhy?' and I told them it was in case something f***ed up happened. And now it's happening. Aren't you glad you have that Spam now, huh?"

- soldier, speaking to another soldier

"Alright, alright, I'll quit complaining about the f'ing Spam, geez."

- second soldier's response

"Ah yes. Leo Boucher. No one knows if this is his real name, or if Leo is short for something. Point is, he's a total fucking mystery. I haven't heard a single word from him, nor ever seen his face, yet I feel like I know him. Well, half know him. I've heard hundreds of stories about him. That he was a child laborer who rose through the ranks of the prison system until he became a gulag warden. Another says that he joined his love in the military, and after she was killed, he became distraught and joined the police, where he got assigned to the labor system, where he proceeded to take out his rage on unsuspecting inmates via fights and beatings. Another says that he was a boater, enjoying his life and fishing to his heart's content until he lost his ship to the State Labor Sector, and joined the gulag security as an alternative. What do these all have in common? The gulags.
Fuck, I'm drunk. Don't listen to anything I say.

The lack of scientific literacy in today's society deeply concerns me. The fact that a developing nation such as us values such notions is a clear indicator of how valuable such a literacy is to national development as well as technological development and infrastructure.

This lack of scientific literacy is evident in the so called 'kings' of the west, yes United States of America I'm talking about them. Yes, the scientific method is a tool, but what use is a power drill if one uses it to drill away at someone's eyeballs? It requires solid knowledge of procedures and theories, education in the sciences is tantamount to developing basic scientific literacy. It is an indicator of societal ability of critical thought and understanding.

Bogus sciences of homeopathy, anti-vaxxers, and aforementioned 'pop-cultural sciences' are products of low scientific literacy in the providers of media as well as the general public. It is shameful and downright disappointing when one has the resources to gain an education, even a basic one, to understand the sciences, and outright refuses and chooses to be ignorant. Media outlets are also notorious for perpetuating such disinformation to line their filthy wallets in that part of the world, which is such a disappointment.

Scientific illiteracy, like any form of willful ignorance, is pathetic and quite unjustifiable in a world of information and accessible learning.

"If you debate to persuade another side to your cause, you will probably leave disappointed and in despair. Hardly does one manage to convince another to forego the beliefs they have gathered throughout their lifetime and believe true, whether you go about it emotionally, rationally, or perhaps at the end of a sword. Of course, attempting to convince them to begin with is folly upon your behalf, and you would be better off committing your time to something else worthwhile."

"Lobbying has been illegal in the United States of Bereia since 1842. The pro-slavery lobby was one of the driving factors which pushed us into the Civil War, which lasted ten years and killed the better part of two million people before it was over, so one of the first orders of business for the post-war Congress was making sure that could not happen again. At first the idea was to only put blocks in the law against lobbying for certain causes, but no one list could gain enough supporters. The end result was that lobbying, as a while, was criminalized."
