Thread length cap - 1,000 pages

So as folks might have noticed, the forum has occasionally started to get really laggy, leading to a resurgence in the ancient art of the accidental multi-post among other nuisances like slow response time and the forum being periodically unavailable. And it is really, really annoying. Basically, what's happening is certain things on the forum have been traced to causing the largest load issues: particularly really long forum threads. The ones that get to be several thousand pages long.

To try and combat this problem, we're (temporarily, it is hoped) instituting a thread length cap of 1,000 pages; at which point the thread will need to be locked and a new thread started to replace it. Only a handful of threads actually get up anywhere close to 1,000 pages; mostly certain chat threads, forum games, and a couple of discussions in the roleplay forums, so the bulk of the forum won't be affected by the cap. Similarly, most of the threads that DO get up there tend to be fast moving social threads that will in theory take a week or so if not longer to reach 1,000 pages, so we're not going through new threads every other day.

It's annoying, but we're hoping this precautionary measure will soften the load on the server without having to actually go deleting threads or something that would really suck. Hopefully the techie types will have a better solution in the not-too-distant future.

Yes, you made that quite clear in the pony thread. The alternative would be considerably worse and much less popular; call it a hunch, but if past experience is anything to go by, people around here would get really torqued off if threads start getting deleted due to being old and worn out rather than simply locked but still viewable.

You're still perfectly capable of posting, and of viewing your prior posts in large threads; this move just slices them up into a size that the forum hopefully won't choke and die on.

You are way overreacting. The mods are not deleting threads or anything, they're just locking them at 1000 pages and asking you to make a new one to help with server loads. It's a choice between starting a new thread every once in a while or browsing a really slow forum and having a bunch of problems. It's not like a repeat of 7 Feb 2011 or anything. Calm down.

I guess the only reason this is unlocked is to provide a space for questions/'great concerns' about the move, which honestly can't be that great many.

Well, I understand this, and I thought it was the April Fool's Day Joke. Sometimes, even the server gets reset, so yeah. I humbly support this, and quite frankly, it will allow reuse.

However, I have a question, if an archived thread has 1,000 pages or more, will it be deleted?

At first I was concerned, but then I realised that the longest thread I'd been involved in was 11 pages, so sigh of relief there... 1000 pages is fairly generous overall given the situation.

When you pay the costs for running the site, perhaps then you can call the shots. If it weren't for the problems being experienced with server loads, it wouldn't be an issue - which is why it hadn't been done prior to now. No one is being limited in their posting, topics, or anything of the sort. There is no physical 'real estate' involved in where players post. It's merely the topic at hand for any given thread that separates them. Nothing of consequence is being denied anyone. Nothing is being deleted. Thank you, and have a good night.

They'll be left alone- at worst we might use the Split Topic function to divide them into a Part I and Part II if necessary; but long threads in the Archive typically don't get loaded as often as long threads that are currently active, and thus aren't contributing as much to the server load.

Not deleted, just locked and (possibly) archived.
