A Hitchhikers Guide to F7

Forum index wrote:The place to relax, unwind, share a joke, and generally goof off.

It's difficult to express the true nature of F7, to find the words that most directly convey the essence of this forum. Even then, if you could find those words, there is a high chance they would sound like incoherent babble to any sane member of society.

Good thing being sane isn’t a requirement to post here, huh?

In function, F7 exists as a home to wayward threads that have no place in the “srs bsns” world of General, the fast and furious roleplay environment of Intentional Incidents, nor the stately atmosphere that surrounds NationStates. In fact, these threads not related to the core game of NationStates in any direct way.

But, if F7 isn't any of those things, what exactly goes on in this wacky den of fun and debauchery?

Simple: Just that.

In form and spirit, F7 is the place where posters encourage an environment of carefree, good natured fun. Whether through word or rating games, various non-NS-related RPs, or simply by relaxing and sharing in good times at the Crispy Critter Bar and Grill, F7's posters endeavor to keep the atmosphere light-hearted (and no less than three hops away from sane at any given time).

Posters of all walks of NS, from roleplayers and raiders to debaters and defenders, and everyone in between, ranging from the oldest nations of antiquity, to the newest of newbies, can find common ground here. Players can relax and participate in a game, sign up for an RP, or have a cool drink and socialize at the Crispy Critter Bar and Grill. The choices are all but endless.

In short, F7 is what you make it.

Common Etiquette and Terminology

So you're wondering what it means when people say AN, AU, BN, etc (short for et cetera which means 'and so on')? Well, look no further than this handy-dandy little dictionary of common terms and things that some folks might yell at you about! Included are certain terms and expectations that are generally considered 'good form' in the various threads of F7.

/bump: If a poster wishes to bring a thread back to the top of the topics listing so that it can be seen by more people and hopefully responded to, they will generally post in that thread with /bump, which means they're 'bumping' the thread back up. This is generally only permissible on a sparing basis, as excessive /bumping will be treated as spam. The general rule is once a day.

/skip: If a poster makes a response in a thread that is not related to the topic of the thread itself, it is considered good form to place a /skip at the very end of the post in order to advise later posters that one should disregard that post for the sake of identifying who they are replying to. Posters are also recommended to use TGs if they have a question about the most recent responses.

/stillme: In some cases, a user might have posted a comment that is non-relevant to the topic of the thread and may have forgotten to type /skip. In such cases, the poster who is 'last' in regards to the thread content may post a comment that contains '/stillme'. This is a note to later posters that they should focus on the poster who produced the /stillme for the purposes of writing a reply according to the thread topic. A /stillme might also be used in limited circumstances when a poster has cause to take issue with a reply that was directed at them before. /stillme posts that are used in this way need to include a REASON for the /stillme, as just popping in with a /stillme in response to someone else's post can be seen as provoking a confrontation. An explanation as to what the other poster might have gotten wrong can go a long way towards making F7 a better place for all. F7 is a place for relaxation, not aggravated back and forth.

AN: 'Above Nation'. A thread in F7 that focuses on something about AN will generally involve looking at something about the nation in the most recent post. Some of these threads merely ask you to guess something based on their flag, or some task you with looking at the factbooks of that nation.

AU: 'Above User'. Threads involving this generally involve guessing things about the poster just before you, not necessarily their nation.

BN/BU: 'Below Nation / Below User'. Same as the previous two, but it involves something about the user that shows up AFTER your post. Game threads that deal with this generally involve 'predict BN' or some such.

Doubleposting: This is a term given to individuals who make one post, get replied to, and then post again right after in order to respond to that nation. It is considered bad form to double-post in many of the AN threads as it threatens to monopolize the content. Generally, a poster is advised to wait until at least two or three 'content' posts have been made by others before posting their next response.

Factbook: Many F7 threads have an expectation that the poster should be reading the other poster's factbooks. These are sub-pages on the nation information page that contain user-created content such as In-Character Overviews or Military Factbooks. For instance, if the thread involves AN's Military, the expectation is that you as the replying party should be going into the factbooks and reading any factbooks that might possess information on the nation's military. Simply defaulting to what might be NS Policies or looking at the basic information page (which is often not considered a part of the nation's lore) runs a VERY high risk of getting /stillme'd as the poster has functionally ignored the purpose of the thread (which is also considered 'low-effort')

FTFY: 'Fixed That For You'. Typically accompanied by a quote of a previous reply that has been modified in some way to correct a mistake. NOTE: EDITING QUOTES TO CORRECT AN ISSUE OR MODIFY A STATEMENT SHOULD USE STRIKE TAGS INSTEAD OF REMOVING THE TEXT ITSELF.

Ninja: A 'ninja' in the context of F7 is a term given to a poster who has managed to sneak in a reply while you were still constructing one of your own. It is somewhat commonplace in F7 as some threads can proceed at a rapid pace. It is a useful habit for a poster to check the posts after they have submitted their response to see whether they have been 'ninja'd' by another poster, and it is considered good form to either edit your post to reply to the ninja or delete your post. Leaving your post unaltered may draw a /stillme.

OP: Short for Original Post or Original Poster. OP refers to the first post of any given thread, which in F7 is where one can find the basic premise of the game to be played. PLEASE read it before you actually post to a game where you are replying to something specific about the previous poster's stuff. It is considered bad form to make a response that does not in some way incorporate information gleaned from the previous nation's factbooks, or to post in such threads without factbooks of your own. Failing to account for the previous nation's factbooks or the premise indicated in the OP have a high chance of resulting in /stillme responses.

Reserved: A post in a thread that involves responding to the previous poster will occasionally have someone reply with 'reserved'. This is a placeholder post, and is functionally used to say that the poster would like to respond to that particular poster and would like to avoid the possibility of being ninja'd in the process. The idea is, the poster initially replies with 'reserved', then immediately sets to editing their post into an actual response that is in keeping with the thread. While some folks consider it bad form as it is essentially a form of calling dibs on a response, there is no specific rule to be broken in using it. It is recommended that posters seeking to respond to a post that reads 'reserved' wait until the edited response comes through before they start working on a response of their own... or you could just do a 'reserved' of your own... Of course, excessive strings of 'reserved' might be considered spam... so use at your own risk.

Summie: An abbreviated form of 'Summerposter' which is a pejorative term given predominantly to posters who have made what is considered by others to be 'low effort' responses. Generally, there is an expectation that one's responses in the various game threads will have some thought behind them as opposed to a response along the lines of 'meh'. Such posts run the risk of being /stillme'd, and can be aggravating to other players. That said, CALLING SOMEONE A ‘SUMMIE’ AS IF THAT ALONE JUSTIFIES DISREGARDING THEIR POST HAS A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF BEING TREATED AS FLAMEBAITING.

A note about the ebil autoprune

The “autoprune” is a feature exclusive to the F7 subforum. It ensures that threads that have become inactive (defined as not having been posted in for seven days) are automatically deleted from the board. As F7 is a busy, bustling asylum, this feature is necessary to ensure the stability of the forums' server. It can be a downer when a beloved game or RP is devoured by the server, but, unless explicitly forbidden, games can be remade over and over again!

Reader Surrogate wrote:Bu...bu...but what about RP’s?! Surely you don’t want all that hard work and writer's cramp to go to waste?

No, I don't! And neither do the admins! That's why the moderation team helpfully grants “archive” requests for completed RP threads. While a request to archive a thread isn’t necessarily guaranteed to be granted, if an RP’s content is of sufficient quality that it warrants saving, chances are it will be. Then, it will remain in the archives, in all its glory, for all time…or until we move servers…again…

To request that your thread be archived, simply post a thread with your request in Moderation, and be sure to provide a link. Also, leave gifts, copious amounts of gifts.

Roleplay threads which are not "chat and location threads" or "threads with some roleplay elements" belong in Portal to the Multiverse. Whether a thread is archived or not will be based upon the merits of the reasoning for the request and the content of the thread submitted for possible archival.

Game threads explained

Arguably one of the most common forms of threads on F7, and no doubt the most popular, game threads cover a wide variety of (arguably) intellectual pursuits, asking players to engage a varying degrees of wit (or half of it) to participate. Almost universally, the rules of the games are quite simple, and almost always ask the player to interact in same way with the player posting just before (often referred to as “above”) them.

In general, games can be sub-divided into several categories

Word Games

Word games ask players to utilize the words of a previous poster in a variety of unique and interesting ways. Again, the rules tend to be straight forward, and the brain power involved to participate, if measured on a scale of one to ten, would hardly rate a fraction. That’s the allure, though, as it’s a quick and mindless way to burn some time and brain cells. Some games are a call and response situation, players reacting to the posts of the players above them, while other games may ask you to perform an action using a limited amount of words, and still others may give the writer more freedom, asking them to continue a story from a previous post.

Some common examples include:

“The poster above you” games

These games require the player to interact with the poster above them. Gee, that was hard huh? These games ask the players to evaluate and comment on a variety of material regarding the previous poster, from simple ratings of a nation’s flag or motto, to more direct interaction with the player and their post. These games require more thought on the part of the player, and are generally intended, like most of F7, to generate humorous responses. Creativity, while not required, is strongly encouraged!

Some examples include:

Classic and games which defy classification

These are games which don’t meet the criteria for the above, or are classic examples of well-established games.

Some examples include:

"Your nation" games

A little bit of a bleed over form F&NI, these threads deal with various facts and statistics in your nation or the nation posting before you. Who would win in a war? Would you be allies? Who exports more cheese? Who can pay Trans the most money in a single day? Find those here!

Some examples include:

So you want to post a game thread?

Great! Chances are it’ll be a wonderful addition to the fun and exciting, and ever so special, world of F7. You should just ensure that your game isn’t too close to an existing game's concept, and that it involves more thought or effort than simple one word, or one line posts. Try to be creative and original!

Roleplaying Threads

F7 role play has been moved to a new subforum! You can find a guide to roleplaying in the new multiverse here

Threads that Defy Nature Categorization

Sexiest NSer

A semi-annual, non-official, player-ran competition is held in F7 to determine the best looking, or sexiest, NS player from the male and female category.

This thread has moved to General, if it returns, it'll be posted here.

And don’t even try to tell me you only looked at it for the posts, I know better!

The Church of So-and-So

Sometimes, notable posters on F7 gain enough fame and notoriety with other netizens that a church thread is erected in their honor. These threads, while not exactly story driven, must retain elements of roleplay and purpose, or may be subject to lock. Church threads are a rare occurrence, and it is not encouraged that a poster open a church in his or her own name (read…just don’t frickin' do it, blasphemer.) If you choose to open a church dedicated to another poster, be prepared to back up your deity's divinity. Just remember, no flaming in the holy wars.

The NSG Senate [See Ruling: LINK]

This is a new spin on an older idea, where players have come together to be representatives in an overarching government under one nation, which some call Aurentina. Discussion is likely to be lively, and delivered with much the same enthusiasm and drive as political debate in NationStates General, so be prepared.

What is this, I don’t even… threads

Sometimes, threads emerge that do more than defy categorization. These threads may defy logic, God, and man, staking their claim upon the furthest reaches of the deep beyond. Gaze upon them, and feel the great old ones gnaw upon your mind. Few and far between, ranging in topic and purpose, scope and popularity, these threads provide posters and readers with hours of entertainment and only marginal brain loss… usually. Ia! Ia! Cthulhu Fhtagn!

This is X, create the story, or something, I don't know, pass the vodka

New to the F7 scene, at least by my recollection, are these nifty threads. I'm really not sure whats going on here exactly, but, here's some nifty reading.

Patriot Liberal wrote:On other forums I've been on, like game forums, I've frequently seen "create your own adventure" games that can turn out pretty funny.

They work by a voting system. Each decision has multiple choice, just like in the create your own adventure books. Choosing a certain action will lead to whatever results.

The decision will be decided by whichever choice seems to have a clear majority - this may be in the first 3, 5, or even 21 votes depending on activity and frankly, my discretion.

I certainly hope that you guys like this idea.

So, I'm going to keep this vague and open. Even I have no clue how this might turn out.

Examples of...whatever these are include:
  • None, that fad died fast, huh?

Enjoy....or something

Location, location, location (threads) [See Ruling: LINK]

With the announcement that free enterprise has once again returned to the universe of F7, players are allowed, even encouraged, to open their own various establishment for their pleasure and the joy of others. No restriction has been placed on the type of establishment that can be opened (outside of those whose service, actions or antics would violate the site rules).

While free enterprise, out there in the meat world, might well entail competitive business tactics and hostile take overs, the regulated economy of F7 negates the need for aggressive promotion and competition between business, establishments and other locations. Besides, there's no need to complete, we all know..."if you build it, they will come..."

In the case where organizations may find that they are at odds over some minor (or major) issue, they would be well advised to ignore one another, as there is infinite room is the ever-expanding F7 galaxy for all of us.

The owner of the establishment has the right to ask any person or persons to leave at any time. If asked to do so, please simply show yourself out the door, and do not return until you have cleared it with the management (via telegram) As always, the owners rights within the establishment are superseded by the site moderation staff.

((If my metaphor was lost on you, let me be plain. The reason location threads were removed in the first place was due to rivalry arising between players attempting to make their thread "the spot" to be in, or jealous regarding lack of posters in various threads or of a surplus of posters in more active threads. This leads to flaming, baiting and other no-no's and, I imagine, is going to be dealt with severely. So, don't.))

In the past, it has happened that location threads have been "at war" with each other. This is strictly RP and is not an excuse for flaming, baiting, thread jacking, or any other nonsense. If someone asks you to leave a thread, do it, please. If you feel yourself becoming angry, frustrated or otherwise disturbed by actions happened on F7... old advice is good advice. Stand up, walk a way form the keyboard, and come back later when the feelings have passed.))

Past examples of successful location threads
Current examples of locations threads

The Flaming Wombat (No, we are no longer doing this)

(no longer) The only bar in town!

While rules and expectations for the Flaming Wombat (called “The Wombat” by the regulars) are outlined in the opening post, it's important that players remember that, while the thread does serve as a chat thread, it is requested that a small amount of RP elements be injected into posts.

Generally portrayed as a bar, the Wombat can be anything the player wants it to be. For example, it is not at all uncommon for players to report sightings of other patrons morphing into Dragons, Vampires, or all manner of indescribable creatures. In addition, players can often be found lounging by a pool, zooming around a race track, or blasting off into outer space (where most of their minds reside anyways). The establishment itself is staffed by gnomes and operated by a giant, burning marsupial named Earl, the Wombat’s staff is capable of meeting any needs the player has. It is simply asked (read: mandated) that guests treat the staff and other patrons with the same amount of respect they’d like to be treated with.

NOTE: The Wombat is fully staffed, and is not hiring. (Read: No.)

Players are more than welcome to pull up a chair and have a relaxing drink with fellow posters in the Wombat, and join in the general lunacy and debauchery. Of course, with players now having the ability to start their own bars, clubs, strip mines, moon bases and other establishments, will the Wombat survive, or will Earl soon be sweeping floors at the WA?

But, what if I don’t like it there, and I want my own place?!

Well, in that case, you’d be advised to go ahead and take the plunge into making your own forum. That’s not meant to be rude, but the result of past experience by the site moderators. In the past, creating separate establishments led to competition, which spiraled beyond healthy rivalry into jealousy. That jealousy led to fear, which lead to hate, and then to the dark side... or at least, to terrible decisions that violated the site rules and brought down the banhammer. This was not a good thing, and ran contrary to the mission of F7: to have a good time, in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. To reduce the proliferation of negative feelings and stress, the team moderating the site placed a blanket ban on threads centering on subjects patronizing an establishment; the Flaming Wombat was the sole exception. They had to burn the village to save it

I’m new, what should I do?

Well, that’s really up to you, isn’t it?

If I were you (and thank God I’m not), the first thing I’d do is introduce myself in the Wombat. Don’t be discouraged if your first post seems to go unanswered, people are usually quick to welcome a newcomer, but, with the volume of posts being made in the Wombat at times, its easy for your reply to get lost. Simply dive right into the action, participate in the shenanigans, we don’t bite…except those of us that do, but don’t worry, when the meds kick in, we’ll be allll riiiight.

If that sort of inane chatter doesn’t amuse you, well, then, aside from you being a killjoy ( :P ), you’re more than welcome to try your hand at any of the currently active games, or look for interesting active roleplays.

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can-

Remember, F7 is what you make it! Welcome!

Reason: Struck section regarding Location threads (entire post should be reviewed thoroughly when time permits)
Now the moderation team really IS Godmoding.
Step 1: One-Stop Rules Shop. Step 2: ctrl+f. Step 3: Type in what you saw in modbox. Step 4: Don't do it again.

This is where you come in

Tl;dr’d Read the guide? Still confused? Need some clarification on a particular point? Have a particular question not addressed by the guide? Wasn’t that a lot of questions already?

That’s fine. Feel free to post them here, someone, possibly myself, another knowledge F7er, or even one of the moderators will get back to you with a proper response.

Note: If you’re question pertains to wondering if a particular thread would be acceptable under the F7 rules, you would do best to ask that in the Moderation subfourm.

I think that would entirely depend on the content and the context. In addition to where you’d be posting it. Bearing in mind that the established content rating “limit”, if you will, is a PG-13 content rating.

You can message it to me and I’d be happy to offer you my opinion, but, I can't give you anything approaching official permission to do anything.

Well, welcome to NS in general and F7 in specific!

Now, when you say “posting a story, and having the next poster continue it.” Do you mean something like this?

Some poster wrote:A man walked…

Another poster wrote:Into a bar and…

Poster the third wrote:Looked at the bartender, telling him, “Come down here!”

Or do you mean something like the role-plays I have linked? As to ideas for a story…that’s really up to you. Some places you could draw inspiration from are media that you enjoy, like a TV show, video game [Rant]please, no more Fallout-themed RP’s! I love Fallout, and I have since 1998 when Fo2 came out, but my God at last check, there are 6 of them active on the board.[/rant] books, movies, comi9c books, anything.

A word of advice, though. While this is really just my opinion, I’ve found it holds pretty true. People don’t like re-enacting videogames, or movies or TV shows. You won’t get a lot of response when you post “Hey, who wants to re-enact Death Race!?” Cause everyone’s going to want to be Jason Drviesacar, and no ones going to want to be….all those other mooks who die. Best bet? Take something you like, and change it, find a way to do a role-play based around the events, not portraying them.

For example: Everyone’s seen the movie Starship Troopers? (Just the first one, the other two were garbage). So, someone could do an RP focusing on a different part of the Attack on Klendathu, or role-play an entirely different M.I assault on a (more) fictional planet not seen in the movie.

Thanks for your great advice! I know about all of that "remake" stuff and i hate when people do that but changing it up a little always makes for some great fun. Basically what I'm saying is that I'm always bouncing ideas of the all and was just making sure it would be appropriate if posted some and people would be more than welcome to critique and ad on to anything I post. I love constructive criticism ^^ because I'm writing for the enjoyment of others so I like to know what they think. Anyway, thank again and if I post anything I hope you get a chance to read it, but i am gonna be pretty busy with school for a little while :s I'm sure I'll get something out though. (BTW I'm a steampunk, post apocalyptic, musically integrated, and developing short story writer.)

Haha, I'm pretty bad about proof-reading. King of typos right here! :)

Sure, I'm more than willing to check out anything you do, just send me a TG. I do hope whatever work you put up will be appreciated, but, if one idea isn't, don't let it get you down, I've posted plenty of RP ideas and games that fell by the wayside...like I said, not every idea is a winner to everyone.

Good luck!

Thanks again for your support! Like I said with all of my school work I haven't had much free time but you will see something posted soon enough I'm sure:)

If you want a good rp, read this shit.
Tiami is cool.
Nat: Night's always in some bizarre state somewhere between "intoxicated enough to kill a hair metal lead singer" and "annoying Mormon missionary sober".

Swith: It's because you're so awesome. God himself refreshes the screen before he types just to see if Nightkill has written anything while he was off somewhere else.

It's Nightkill. He's been there so long he rents out rooms to other people at a flat rate, but demands cash up front.

Sexiest NSer doesn't really belong in here, considering the 2011 edition was held over in General.

While this may be technically true, the year which is linked happened here, and is thus part of F7 history. It stands. You'll notice I did not link to the 2011 election...because it happened....over there...with those people. :P

Why are some threads moved from F7 to General or Vice Versa?

Generally speaking, a thread that's devoted t a serious discussion (even of a comical topic) would belong in General.

Whereas treads devoted to no-serious or wacky discussions would belong in F7. These threads, in my opinion, seem to be far and few between, as its hard to get a good, solid topic, thats crazy enough to be here, and not simply spam. Of course, anything of obvious F7 material (Non-NS RP's, word games) would be moved to F7

I believe that thread movements are evaluated on a case by case basis, and are, at first, determined by the moderator in question. If that move is called in question, I'm sure the move will be reviewed by other, not previously involved moderators, to assure it was the correct decision.

If you have a question about why a specific thread was moved, you may try posting in moderation, be sure t provide a think to the thread in question.

I believe that when it was first created it was the 7th subforum, hence the name Forum 7

It was a reference to the secret 7th subforum - people noticed that in URL numbering, the original board skipped the seventh forum. Eventually F7 became a throw-back to that original seventh-forum, but in reality I think it was 12th, somewhere around there. The seventh forum, of course, was the hidden secret-mod-lair.
