[DRAFT] Commend Simone Republic

Postby The Ice States » Thu Mar 21, 2024 12:54 pm

Simone's now given signoff for this to be posted, so here it is. As a more quantitive note to put their achievements into scale, their first resolution was less than two years ago and they are now the third most prolific author in GA history (first and second being IA and myself respectively). Thanks also to Aivintis, Bormiar, Tinhampton and Walfo for commenting on this before its posting! Character count so far is 4422.

Aware that the nation of Simone Republic, represented in the World Assembly by a terrifying, hungry ursine, has been a prolific contributor to the august General Assembly and its home region of The North Pacific;

Noting that among the first resolutions passed by Simone Republic, many addressed complex financial subjects where few other delegations would dare to legislate, conducting in-depth research on complicated topics while applying its own experience on these matters to ensure a fair market, yielding:
  • [resolution=GA#633]Independent Investment Research Protocol[/resolution], which prevents conflicts of interest in investment research, as well as undue coercion on investment analysts;

  • [resolution=GA#681]Non-Compete Clauses Restraints[/resolution], authored alongside Cretox State, Separatist Peoples and Imperium Anglorum, restricting the coercive practice of employers threatening litigation against former employees for receiving employment in other organisations; and

  • The repeal of [resolution=GA#401]Stock Exchanges and Foreign Investment[/resolution], co-authored with Magecastle Embassy Building A5, which maintained a very vague standard for committee-imposed regulations intended to promote fairness in international trade, prompting the committee to issue misleading and flawed recommendations to member nations;
Further admiring Simone Republic's dedication and tenacity towards an ongoing project to reform the World Assembly's laws on immigration and citizenship, one which has spanned a number of resolutions across several months including:
  • [resolution=GA#695]Dual Citizenship Arrangements[/resolution], which formally enshrines the right to seek dual citizenship and prevents undue discrimination by member nations against persons who exercise this right;

  • [resolution=GA#686]Identity Document Issuance[/resolution], again co-authored by Imperium Anglorum, ensuring that all inhabitants of member nations had access to accurate identification free of charge; and

  • [resolution=GA#703]Consular Protection Arrangements[/resolution], which establishes a comprehensive set of rights afforded to citizens of a member nation living abroad, later extended via [resolution=GA#708]Civilian Prisoner Transfers[/resolution] to include a return to their home state while serving prison sentences;
Appreciating the other miscellaneous contributions by Simone Republic to the World Assembly corpus juris, across a range of innovative, often-ignored topics whether it be the promotion of infant nutrition through [resolution=GA#702]Improving Infant Nutrition[/resolution], or preventing the killing of newly-hatched chicks in farming operations via [resolution=GA#667]In-ovo Sexing of Chicks[/resolution];

Observing that Simone Republic's efforts to improve the World Assembly have reached as far as a barbecue, operated in the institution's headquarters by the aforementioned ursine, serving fried chicken and wolf burgers alongside a storefront for rare merchandise, keeping the wealth accumulated by other Ambassadors in check while providing a more enjoyable medium for debates on topics such as international police and cannibalism;

Aware that Simone Republic's contribution has also been extensive within its home region of The North Pacific, utilising its experience in these halls to author informative publications on over 130 resolutions for the region's Ministry of World Assembly Affairs, while also creating a succinct guide for other Ministry staffers to write these publications for themselves;

Recognising that the trust and respect Simone Republic has earned in The North Pacific has allowed the nation to oversee multiple elections as an Election Commissioner, a time-consuming yet necessary task to ensure that ballots in the world's oldest regional democracy were properly counted, while also helping adjudicate the 2023 espionage and gross misconduct case against Madjack as a Temporary Hearing Officer; and

Concluding that Simone Republic and its famous white bear have made an extensive and positive impact upon both the multiversal community and its home region, to an extent deserving of the highest honour this institution can award;

Hereby commends Simone Republic.

I'm not opposed to commending Simone but I think "volume of GA authorship" is not in itself commendable, and that's what this resolution reads like right now. The first five clauses can essentially be boiled down to "Simone has authored a crap-ton of resolutions so I'm gonna take up as much of this doc as I can listing them all!"

Instead of devoting so much of the body of the resolution to merely listing the various categories and effects of Simone's individual resolutions, I'd like to hear more about why Simone's authorship as a corpus is worthy of commendation or what about their work in the GA is above and beyond the standard expected by the body besides a vague "prolific" and a long list.

I vaguely support in concept because Simone is one of the only current GA authors doing actual work to write quality resolutions on novel topics that have not been debated before instead of re-hashing the same resolution for the sixth time. Which, like, it is debatable that "doing what should be the norm" is commendable at all, but when the standards of the GA have fallen as low as they have of late, it sure does seem like it. But that is a separate can of worms. :P

In war, victory. In peace, vigilance. In death, sacrifice. Commended by SC #429.

Lots of GA authorship, not much else. As currently written no support from me. And I am never going to forgive that abhorrent Mariah Carey pastiche.

I like Simone, I really do, but I can't support this right now.

I have no problems with commending GA authors who really only do the GA, but I think it requires a dedication to the craft and a dedication to being an innovator that really would distinguish him from other nominees in the same boat (though, to be fair, there are few of those). When his dedication is largely built on the basis of just writing in bulk (as he's stated himself before--though, admittedly, a lot of what he writes is good, necessary, and interesting, for the most part), it doesn't give me the dedication to actually doing something positive I'm willing to reward.
...And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud!

Aware that the nation of Simone Republic (Simone), represented in the World Assembly by a terrifying, hungry ursine, has been a prolific contributor to the august General Assembly and its home region of The North Pacific;

Applauding Simone's efforts to promote responsible business practices with regards to the environment, consumer protection, and even animal rights, as well as replacing existing legislation on these subjects with more advanced, effective resolutions, whether it be:
  • Authoring the [resolution=GA#705]Sustainable Aquaculture Protocols[/resolution], which set regulations to prevent eutrophication and pollution in general caused by fish farming; and [resolution=GA#667]In-ovo Sexing of Chicks[/resolution], a simple set of mandates to prevent unnecessary animal cruelty via the killing of newly-born chicks in farming operations; or

  • Replacing the vague, largely redundant [resolution=GA#417]Restrictions on Hydraulic Fracturing[/resolution] with the more consolidated [resolution=GA#658]Borderzone Mining and Drilling[/resolution], which facilitates agreements between member nations regarding mining, drilling and dredging near borders;
Further noting the range of resolutions authored by Simone on complex financial subjects, applying its advanced knowledge and experience on these matters to ensure a fair market, for example:
  • [resolution=GA#633]Independent Investment Research Protocol[/resolution] which prevents conflicts of interest in investment research, as well as undue coercion on investment analysts;

  • [resolution=GA#681]Non-Compete Clauses Restraints[/resolution], authored alongside Cretox State, Separatist Peoples and Imperium Anglorum, restricting the coercive practice of employers threatening litigation against former employees for receiving employment in other organisations; and

Cognisant, too, of an ongoing project by Simone to reform the World Assembly's laws on immigration and citizenship, notably through [resolution=GA#695]Dual Citizenship Arrangements[/resolution], which formally enshrines the right to seek dual citizenship; as well as the replacement of [resolution=GA#164]Consular Rights[/resolution] with the expanded [resolution=GA#703]Consular Protection Arrangements[/resolution], which establishes a comprehensive set of rights afforded to citizens of a member nation living abroad;

Appreciating the other miscellaneous contributions by Simone to the World Assembly corpus juris, ranging from promotion of infant nutrition through [resolution=GA#702]Improving Infant Nutrition[/resolution], to collaborating with Wallenburg to repeal the well-intentioned yet problematic [resolution=GA#684]Challenging Sexually Exploitative Recordings[/resolution], to ensuring that all citizens of member nations had accurate identification via [resolution=GA#686]Identity Documents Issuance[/resolution];

Observing that Simone's efforts to improve the World Assembly have reached as far as a barbecue, operated in the institution's headquarters by the aforementioned ursine, serving fried chicken and wolf burgers alongside a storefront for rare merchandise, keeping the wealth accumulated by other Ambassadors in check while providing a more enjoyable medium for debates on topics such as international police and cannibalism;

Distinctly mid candidate who has benefitted primarily from an environment that allows him to churn out pulp resolutions en masse. No support until Simone does something that makes him stand out as a unique figure worthy of specific commendation, as it stands now you might as well be commending the TNP Ministry of World Assembly Affairs.

Similar in a way to Bears Armed, I think Simone Republic was bound to engender a marmite response as a candidate nominee.

I think the current draft goes to in depth into the subject of resolutions, which are, in my opinion, pretty technical and regulatory-heavy. In focusing on the resolutions themselves, I don’t think this draft imparts at a higher level was makes Simone a unique figure in the GA.

Simone is motivated by a desire to construct a more “lived-in” universe within the WA, it drives them to bring humour, idiosyncrasies, and colour to what might otherwise have been pretty dull regulation. This can be interpreted as some as species-wank or too silly, but I think it’s well intended — they’re trying to have fun with the GA and play with the culture of the GA through policymaking.

In the name of actual feedback, even though I think this should be waited on. Feels like jumping the gun. Not to say you're not great if you're reading this Simone you are great :) I just think more time would be useful here.
The Ice States wrote:Applauding Simone's efforts to promote responsible business practices with regards to the environment, consumer protection, and even animal rights,

Should technically be "regard" although this is next-level nitpick.
The Ice States wrote:Appreciating the other miscellaneous contributions by Simone to the World Assembly corpus juris, ranging from promotion of infant nutrition through [resolution=GA#702]Improving Infant Nutrition[/resolution], to collaborating with Wallenburg to repeal the well-intentioned yet problematic [resolution=GA#684]Challenging Sexually Exploitative Recordings[/resolution], to ensuring that all citizens of member nations had accurate identification via [resolution=GA#686]Identity Documents Issuance[/resolution];

This reads really weird, and you use "to" twice in a row. It's kinda clunky. I would suggest cleaning this up. There also should be a "the" in front of promotion me thinks.

I don't see this as worthy of inclusion or commendable. And anything that mentions that wretched WA merch will not have my support :p

A new draft has been posted! This should address most critiques so far; please do mention if it doesn't address them sufficiently.

As to the idea that resolution authorship is not commendable, I do believe it is more than just writing lots of resolutions -- even if that's part of it -- and this should be elaborated on further by the new draft. Many of Simone's resolutions are on complex financial subjects which few other players would legislate on simply because they aren't very accessible topics; it also takes a level of tenacity and dedication to do something like the immigration law reform project. Their roleplay through a white bear character is also a rather notable contribution; for example last year it earned the Roleplay Award from the community. This is why the Observing clause exists as it does.

Addressing specific feedback which is not already addressed above,
Fachumonn wrote:In the name of actual feedback, even though I think this should be waited on. Feels like jumping the gun. Not to say you're not great if you're reading this Simone you are great :) I just think more time would be useful here.

I definitely don't intend to submit immediately -- if this is the consensus I have no objections to waiting a few more months before submitting.

You're entitled to your opinion but I would much rather not accomodate for personal dislikes, which is not what this is about.

My original sentiments still ring true. Simone Republic, although authoring a lot of resolutions, just doesn't stand out in the GA realm and many of his proposals tend to be on the filler side. Maybe there's something as too much quantity and filler?

I actually mostly agree with BBD here - The IFV thing might be commendable, but the first and last clauses are just filler and fluff, which was what I was going at with my feedback.

It's less... filler, per say, and more just like not the most important resolutions. IMO some of it should be left to member-states on how they deal with it. After all, devolution exists.
