[PASSED] Condemn Creeperopolis

Postby Quebecshire » Tue Oct 11, 2022 11:05 am

This one might be a hard sell, but I wanted to try the challenge. I think it's deserving, and a bit different (at least for me). It was more creative than a lot of drafts I've written, so I've enjoyed writing this! Since the nominee isn't super well-know, I've attached a summary below in a spoiler explaining (1) who they are (2) why I think they deserve recognition and (3) why a condemnation.

This is a roleplay-based condemn, to be clear! Character count is presently 5,000.

(1 - Who they are) Creeperopolis (Creeper) the player has been in The League for several years and currently serves as our Chief Consul and World Assembly Delegate. He's very active gameside and in our off-site community and is an industrious contributor. Creeperopolis the nation is a totalitarian backwater that thrives off of exploitation and corruption, a pariah to the international community. It is inspired by elements of El Salvador and has a rich and storied history.

(2 - Why I think they deserve recognition) Creeper is a pillar of our community and in particular the roleplay subset of it. While roleplay is not what The League is most known for in circles like gameplay, it's a huge part of our domestic culture and development. Creeper pioneered our use of wiki which has led to scores of quality articles and hundreds/thousands of various smaller ones - with him by far being the most extensive contributor. He's helped integrate and educate new roleplayers, maintained our canon extensively despite new joins and departures, wrote exhaustive storylines, compiled global information, and so on. In general he's an extremely hard worker and goes above and beyond, especially when it comes to tasks others might not want to take up.

To circle back to the pioneering of wiki (within TL's RP community) and maintenance of canon, I can't emphasize how important and effort-involving that's been on his part as the wiki is an ever-changing and collaborative venture. Things often need to be re-done or re-aligned, new stories added when people join, and so on. His work has definitely made the experience inclusive and enjoyable for new roleplayers, even those previously completely alien to a wiki environment.

(3 - Why a condemnation) This one is easy, his country is simply vile. It's condemnable in every sense of the word in that it's a nasty, regressive beast of a nation that knows just how much it can get away with, is careful to not exceed that, and does whatever it can within those bounds. It's the role he plays in our roleplay and I think it's much more fitting for him. Plus, as a bonus, I think the WA is a bit lacking in quality/unique condemns as of late (but not without some, i.e. Gholgoth).

The Security Council,

Revolted at Creeperopolis, a major power in The League, infamous for plaguing fellow nations with its presence for years, as an indisputably negative influence due to its nature as a regressive and antagonistic state, unrivaled in corruption, abuse, and inequality,

Mourning the loss of democracy caused by a military coup d'etat in Creeperopolis in 2003, part of a disturbing decades-long trend of democratic backsliding and increasing military power over the country - both the result of a civil war in Creeperopolis in the 1940s,

Lamenting that Creeperopolis’ current government manages to continue to function in the international community as a result of its economically convenient ventures such as CORNACA and EMUBAC, corporations which produce coffee/sugar and bananas respectively through cheap or unpaid labor, allowing Creeperopolis to enrich their nation’s oppressive financial and political oligarchs,

Appalled at La’Matanza, where the Creeperian Army crushed a peasant rebellion over working conditions in San Romero at the behest of CORNACA, the brutality of the crackdown setting back pro-worker advocacy in the nation greatly,

Disgusted at the unadulterated corruption that is commonplace in all aspects of Creeperian society, as unethical relationships between bureaucrats and businesses have allowed for negligence and malice to go unpunished. For example, in the aftermath of the tragic 2007 Tuxtla Martínez train disaster, all corporate entities were suspiciously acquitted of legal liability even though 12 people perished and 15 more were injured due to corporate negligence,

Seeing through the dishonesty of the “Emperor” of Creeperopolis, Alexander II, a puppet figure who serves as a propaganda tool for the actual head of the nation, Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez, an autocrat who has authorized despicable acts, chiefly:

  • Extensive persecution of the deposed Alfonso VI’s supporters after the 2003 coup which led to the deaths or disappearances of thousands of individuals during the 2003-04 Creeperian Purges,
  • Allowing the Creeperian military to engage in mass human rights violations and wanton disregard for civilian well-being in southern Creeperopolis as a response to an insurgency by Deltinian rebels in the region,
  • Erosion of due process for millions of Creeperans by allowing national law enforcement to execute and use excessive force against those accused of crimes or membership in criminal organizations targeted by the government,

Horrified by the vast crimes of the National Intelligence Directorate, Creeperopolis’ secret police, which has engaged in extensive human and civil rights violations over the years, including:

  • Decimating Senvarian culture and their communities by the means of excessive policing and institutional discrimination to ensure control of the central government over these regions,
  • Censoring Creeperian media and discourse en masse via Operation Genesis 19:24-25, constantly suppressing thought such as communism, atheism, or pro-democracy sentiments that dissent from the brutal regime,
  • Overseeing the incarceration of over one-hundred thousand Creeperans in seven highly overcrowded military prisons throughout the country, each with nauseating living and working conditions,
  • Assassinating multiple subnational officials throughout Creeperopolis in an attempt to crush dissent against the central government and ensure the dominance of its dreadful policies,

Denouncing the Cooperation and Development Coalition, a league of chaos driven by Creeperopolis which has used its influence in areas surrounding its members to abet undue foreign interference. Through this organization, Creeperopolis and Salisford have maintained a near-colonial grip on their neighbors, extending their subversion to the “Neosur” region of southern Ecros,

Censuring the invasion of Sequoyah led by Creeperopolis, during which the Creeperian military invaded and occupied their southern neighbor. After occupying the nation for multiple years, sham-referendums were held to validate unjustifiable Creeperian annexation of key Sequoyan urban and economic centers in the nation’s northeast,

Warning member states through this condemnation that not even foreign nationals are safe in Creeperopolis, demonstrated through the detainment and “disappearance” of the Morovan Vladimir Kruschev. Since their initial disappearance Kruschev has been subject to a long saga of hardship in infamous Creeperian prisons alongside detainees domestic and foreign alike - serving as a warning to those who might visit the insidious nation,

Believing wholeheartedly that so long as the establishment in Creeperopolis continues to operate unmitigated, the nation will serve as a somber, cautionary tale of tragedy to all who encounter it and that a permanent overthrow of the ongoing dictatorship would only benefit the global order,

Hereby condemns [nation=long]Creeperopolis[/nation].

The Security Council,

Revolting at the introduction of Creeperopolis as a major power in The League, having plagued its fellow nations in the region with its presence for years, as an indisputably negative influence due to its nature as a regressive and antagonistic state, unrivaled in corruption, abuse, and inequality,

Dismayed that the extant regime in Creeperopolis came to be in 2003 as the result of a military coup d’état, cementing decades of democratic backsliding and the armed forces’ increase in power over the country, an ongoing legacy of decline since their civil war in the 1940s,

Lamenting that Creeperopolis’s current government managed to continue to function in the international community as a result of its economically convenient ventures such as CORNACA and EMUBAC, companies which produce coffee/sugar and bananas respectively through cheap or unpaid labor, allowing Creeperopolis to enrich their nation’s oppressive corporate and political oligarchs,

Disgusted at the unadulterated corruption that is commonplace in all aspects of Creeperian society, as unethical relationships between bureaucrats and businesses have allowed for negligence and malice to go unpunished. For example, the aftermath of the tragic 2007 Tuxtla Martínez train disaster, where all corporate entities suspiciously acquitted of legal liability,

Seeing through the dishonesty of the “Emperor” of Creeperopolis, Alexander II, a puppet figure who serves as a public relations tool for the actual leader of the nation, Augusto Cabañeras Gutiérrez (ACG), an autocrat who has authorized despicable acts, chiefly:

  • Extensive persecution of political supporters of the deposed Alfonso VI after the 2003 overthrow which led to the deaths or disappearances of thousands of individuals during the 2003-04 Creeperian Purges,
  • Allowing the Creeperian military to engage in mass human rights violations and wanton disregard for civilian well-being in the southern region of Deltino in response to an insurgency by rebels in the region,
  • Erosion of due process for millions of Creeperans by allowing national law enforcement to execute and use excessive force against those accused of crimes or membership in criminal organizations targeted by the government,

Horrified at the vast crimes of the National Intelligence Directorate (DINA), Creeperopolis’s secret police, which has engaged in extensive human and civil rights violations over the years, notably:

  • Suppression of Senvarian culture and communities by the means of excessive policing and institutional discrimination to ensure control of the central government over these regions,
  • Mass censorship of media throughout Creeperopolis, including but not limited to television and newspapers, constantly suppressing thought such as communism, atheism, or pro-democracy sentiments that dissent from the brutal regime,
  • Overseeing the incarceration of over one-hundred thousand Creeperans in seven highly overcrowded military prisons throughout the country, each with nauseating living and working conditions,
  • Assassinating multiple subnational officials throughout Creeperopolis in an attempt to crush dissent against the central government and ensure the unrelenting control of its dreadful policies,

Denouncing the Cooperation and Development Coalition, an international organization spearheaded by Creeperopolis which has used its influence in areas surrounding its members to abet undue foreign interference and outright invasion of its neighbors, such as with the 2020 invasion of Sequoyah sponsored by the alliance,

Fearful and compelled to warn member states through this condemnation that not even foreign nationals are safe in Creeperopolis, demonstrated through the detainment and “disappearance” of the Morovan Vladimir Kruschev. Since their initial “disappearance” Krushev has been subject to a long saga of hardship in infamous Creeperian prisons alongside detainees domestic and foreign alike, serving as a warning to those who might visit the insidious nation,

Believing wholeheartedly that so long as the incumbent leadership in Creeperopolis continues to operate unmitigated, the nation will serve as a somber, cautionary tale of tragedy to all who encounter it,

Wishing in no uncertain terms for ongoing dictatorship in the nation to be permanently deposed,

Great to see this on here! I, for one, am certainly interested in condemning another RPer, even if said Per doesn't fit the "traditional" typology of the RPers condemned on this council. (Plus, I think this actually serves as a fun launching off point for something else I might consider working on.)

Anyways, your feedback, my good sir.
The Security Council,

Revolting at the introduction of Creeperopolis as a major power in The League, having plagued its fellow nations in the region with its presence for years, as an indisputably negative influence due to its nature as a regressive and antagonistic state, unrivaled in corruption, abuse, and inequality,

This doesn't quite work. I would rephrase it. Suggestion: "Revolted at Creeperopolis, a major power in The League infamous for plaguing fellow nations...."

It needs to be rephrased to work at least syntactically, but I like the idea.

Dismayed that the extant regime in Creeperopolis came to be in 2003 as the result of a military coup d’état, cementing decades of democratic backsliding and the armed forces’ increase in power over the country, an ongoing legacy of decline since their civil war in the 1940s,

So, this is another one where, had I had more time I would have suggested a wholesale rewrite of the clause. Like above, the idea you're going for is good, but it could be fleshed out a bit better methinks.

I'd go for something like "Mourning the loss of democracy caused by a military coup d'etat in Creeperopolis in 2003, part of a disturbing decades-long trend of democratic backsliding and increasing military power over the country, both the result of a civil war in Creeperopolis in the 1940s,"

This is good! I would add something to the end to really drive the abuse of labor thing home though.

I'd rephrase the second sentence slightly and add some detail: "For example, in the aftermath of the tragic 2007 Tuxtla Martínez train disaster, where all corporate entities were suspiciously acquitted of legal liability even though [detail] people perished due to corporate negligence,"

This is very good. I think the phrasing of how you launch into the list is slightly off, but can't put my finger on it. Would also include the gender pronoun for Alfonso VI, and it should be legal given there's precedent for this sort of thing in RP commends.

Would go with "Horrified by the crimes" rather than what you've got now. Would also change "notably" to "including". That would require reformulating subclauses 1 and 2 to be "ing" verbs and some slight verbiage tweaks, but those won't be major.

Do not need "with the" before "2020 invasion of Sequoyah".

Would start this with "Warning".

Hereby condemns [nation=long]Creeperopolis[/nation].

Combine the "Believing" and "Wishing" clauses.

All in all a very good start. I look forward to seeing where this goes! :)

Our roleplay follows real-time in terms of progression*, so it would be 11 October 2022 in Creeperopolis (at the time of this post!) :P

Also, I'll be getting to Hulldom's feedback sometime today! :)

*People can still RP stuff in previous times for lore, of course, but yeah, we follow real-time for the present.

This is definitely a well written draft, I only have one thing to note (and it might not even be a concern if I'm the only one who thinks that way).

Dismayed that the extant regime in Creeperopolis came to be in 2003 as the result of a military coup d’état,

I'm worried that this will be read by people as saying that the nation of Creeperopolis was founded into NationStates in 2003, which is significantly earlier than Creeper's 2015 founding date.

Maybe a reword that clarifies that it deposed a predecessor regime, as opposed to being when Creeperopolis came into existence would fix that?

I don't think it's a huge issue, but I see the concern/point.

This seems to me too obvious of a sorta self-condemn. The author is condemning one of the other leaders of the league. Opposed.

By that logic, no member of a region can ever commend/condemn other members of that same region. It unnecessarily restricts the pool of eligible writers in a way which absolutely reduces the potential quality of said C/C and quite possibly who will be written about too.

If I had any doubts about supporting this, I certainly don't now.

By that logic, Commend Tim is a self-commend. We're both in TGW, after all, both high ranking defenders... so Commend Luca would also be a self-commend. Or any raider condemning a raider is self-condemning?

Yeah, no agreement from me there. And in general I think regional figures being C/C'd by their fellow members is perfectly fine, if not ideal (see: Commend Emiline largely by Anteria natives, Commend Bran Astor primarily by Varanius, etc.).

Being in the same region as the nominee does not make something a self-condemn. If this was a condemnation of, say, The League, I would agree with you -- but it isn't.

This has never been considered even close to grounds for a self-commend.

I, for one, am certainly interested in condemning another RPer, even if said Per doesn't fit the "traditional" typology of the RPers condemned on this council. Anyways, your feedback, my good sir.

Oooo, I'm looking forward to whatever you might work on then, hopefully we'll see eventually...

Hm, you're right, that would make it align more with the rest of the draft. Fixed.
Hulldom wrote:

I fucking love this phrasing, and I think it works quite well to resolve One Small Island's concern as well (as it clearly implies the existence of Creeperopolis pre-2003 even in the earlier part of the clause).

Hulldom wrote:
Lamenting that Creeperopolis’s current government managed to continue to function in the international community as a result of its economically convenient ventures such as CORNACA and EMUBAC, companies which produce coffee/sugar and bananas respectively through cheap or unpaid labor, allowing Creeperopolis to enrich their nation’s oppressive corporate and political oligarchs,

This is good! I would add something to the end to really drive the abuse of labor thing home though.

Good idea, I've added the following clause below it (combining it into this one felt too clunky):

"Appalled at La’Matanza, where the Creeperian Army crushed a peasant rebellion over working conditions in San Romero at the behest of CORNACA, the brutality of the suppression setting back pro-worker advocacy in the nation greatly,

Hulldom wrote:
Disgusted at the unadulterated corruption that is commonplace in all aspects of Creeperian society, as unethical relationships between bureaucrats and businesses have allowed for negligence and malice to go unpunished. For example, the aftermath of the tragic 2007 Tuxtla Martínez train disaster, where all corporate entities suspiciously acquitted of legal liability,

I'd rephrase the second sentence slightly and add some detail: "For example, in the aftermath of the tragic 2007 Tuxtla Martínez train disaster, where all corporate entities were suspiciously acquitted of legal liability even though [detail] people perished due to corporate negligence,"

Updated!

Hulldom wrote:

This is very good. I think the phrasing of how you launch into the list is slightly off, but can't put my finger on it. Would also include the gender pronoun for Alfonso VI, and it should be legal given there's precedent for this sort of thing in RP commends.

Gender pronoun added - thanks for linking some precedent as well!

Hulldom wrote:

Would go with "Horrified by the crimes" rather than what you've got now. Would also change "notably" to "including". That would require reformulating subclauses 1 and 2 to be "ing" verbs and some slight verbiage tweaks, but those won't be major.

Implemented most of this (I've kept "vast" for now, as I think it flows well, but am amiable to further change). Thanks again!

Do not need "with the" before "2020 invasion of Sequoyah".

I removed "with", but I think "the" still fits here? I might be plainly wrong, so feel free to correct me further.

Would start this with "Warning".

Fair, that makes it a bit more concise. I was trying to emphasize a certain narrative emotion there, but I don't think it makes sense for the SC to fear a backwater state, now that I think more about it.

Hulldom wrote:

Combine the "Believing" and "Wishing" clauses.

Hmmm, I made an attempt at this here, I think it works, so let's see...

"Believing wholeheartedly that so long as the incumbent leadership in Creeperopolis continues to operate unmitigated, the nation will serve as a somber, cautionary tale of tragedy to all who encounter it, and that a permanent overthrow of the ongoing dictatorship would only benefit the global order,"

Hulldom wrote:All in all a very good start. I look forward to seeing where this goes! :)

Appreciate the context given at the beginning, and the draft is really easy to read;

Hard support! Creeper is very deserving of a condemnation and I would personally argue that they aren't all that unnoticed! I appreciate that some diversity in how WA proposals are put forward and the topics they cover are being brought into fruition.

For some reason I missed this until now. First read through is very favourable - the writing is up to your usual high standards and the research into the nominee is impeccable.

I will read through again over the weekend, but if that confirms my initial impression then I see no problem in giving this my full support.

I've made a couple changes to adjust for better representation of the "Denouncing" clause and more detail on the Sequoyah invasion on its own clause - the reason being what I perceive to be better flow and that the Sequoyah invasion storyline is (finally) concluding after ~2 years, so it's appropriate to update that (great timing, Creeper/Zion).

I've added the "Censuring" clause for that reason, it seemed like an applicable introductory word but I am open to revision, of course.

Since the denouncing clauses' portions about "Sur", "Ecros", and "Neo-Sur" might be confusing to some, I've attached the current map of our roleplay to help so people can comment with that added information. Sur is circled in red, Ecros is circled in green, and neo-Sur's most commonly accepted definition is circled in orange.

To simplify the argument in that clause: Creeperopolis and Salisford control most of Sur through their political alliances. They have also extended their influence to southern Ecros towards nations somewhat similar to them, leading to the coining of the term "Neo-Sur" which can be used to describe nations in that sphere (with varying accuracy, it's definition being somewhat contested based on the context, as with many things of this sort).

Unfortunately this change puts me slightly over the character limit, but I'd rather include it tentatively and see about trimming more (or other) things down after feedback than not attempt to include it at all.

Also made some changes which appear to have shaved off about 100 characters, down to 5,092.

Removing acronyms for things only mentioned once (ACG, DINA)

"Creeperopolis and their allies in Salisford" -> "Creeperopolis and Salisford"

"Mass censoring of media throughout Creeperopolis" -> "Mass censorship throughout Creeperopolis"

"including but not limited to television and newspapers" -> "including television and newspapers"

"ensure the unrelenting control of its dreadful policies" -> "ensure the dominance of its dreadful policies"

"maintained a tight grip on the geopolitical climate with their neighbors" -> maintained a tight grip on their neighbors

"even extending their subversion to the southern portions of the continent Ecros, dubbed the “neo-Sur” region of Ecros," -> "extending their subversion to the southern portions of the continent Ecros, “neo-Sur”,"

This is really well written, and I would vote whole heartedly in favour once it reaches the floor.

I do have a couple of suggestions.
Quebecshire wrote:Creeper is a pillar of our community and in particular the roleplay subset of it.

I know it might be a challenge with the word count, but I think Creeper the player’s contributions should be mentioned as well. Him essentially helping build and enrich The League’s roleplay subcommunity is worthy of mention. (To stick with the theme of the condemn, perhaps something like that their seemingly helpful behaviour on the international stage, only serves to sanitize the nation’s public image, and prevent their heinous civil rights violations from coming to light?)

Quebecshire wrote:Denouncing the Cooperation and Development Coalition, an international organization spearheaded by Creeperopolis which has used its influence in areas surrounding its members to abet undue foreign interference. Through this organization, Creeperopolis and Salisford have maintained a tight grip on their neighbors, extending their subversion to the southern portions of the continent Ecros, “neo-Sur”,

In this clause, Salisford seems to be introduced in an abrupt manner. (Initially, the clause talks about the entire Cooperation and Development Coalition, but then just mentions Creeper and Salisford, with no context as to what Salisford is, and why they are being mentioned. Would there be any way to briefly give context? (Maybe like 3 words describing it?)
