[TABLED] Commend The Embassy

Postby The Python » Sun Feb 21, 2021 8:30 pm

Given the recent events in the Embassy, I decided to write a commend draft. So, here it is!

The Security Council,

NOTING that the Embassy is one of the oldest active embassy collecting regions, founded over 5 years ago by Embassy Master in April 2015, with the intention of improving diplomatic relations between regions across NationStates,

LAUDING the Embassy's excellent diplomacy startegy, having at its peak over 4000 active embassies,

OBSERVING that the excellent diplomacy conducted by the Embassy has caused it to be used as an interregional chat hub for regions from around NationStates to communicate - it's motto was "the largest connector of diversity amongst regions, connecting thousands to each other through a single, neutral point.",

BELIEVING that such extraordinary diplomacy merits recognition by this council,

Hereby commends the Embassy.

I don't think The Embassy's existence and purpose is worth an SC Commendation.

Okay....?

LAUDING the Embassy's excelent diplomacy startegy, having at its peak over 4000 active embassies,

You mean indiscriminately sending embassy requests to random regions?

OBSERVING that the excelent diplomacy conducted by the Embassy has caused it to be used as an interregional chat hub for regions from around NationStates to communicate - it's motto was "the largest connector of diversity amongst regions, connecting thousands to each other through a single, neutral point.",

Excellent, not excelent.

LAMENTING the recent raid on the Embassy by a coalition of raiders including Lily, the Black Hawks, Lone Wolves United and others, some of which have already been condemned by this august body,

They got raided, so we should commend them?

Look, I like The Embassy, but milking this raid isn't going to help you pass through a half baked commendation for an underwhelming target. You need to elaborate a lot more as well

Finally just wait - the improved end product will come out of their ends so to speak.

But seriously this is just another in a long line of poorly researched, badly written, lazy attempts.

Agreed, a region's right to self-determination does not necessarily mean that it is commendable.

To the content of the text and exercising the most due diligence I can muster, although you mention that it reached 4,000 embassies at its peak, it presently has five. If you want to make an argument on the grounds of its ability to connect regions, it would be opportune to do so at a time that it actually serves that function. Regions are seldom commended or condemned as a memory, and there is no particularly strong political motive to do so for this target.

Beyond that, having a motto and being invaded does not make or contribute towards making a region commendable.

I removed the clause about the raid given what people said about it, but I am probably going to table this soon given the feedback I am getting.

So you want to commend a region that recently had to be strong armed into removing its links with fascists? Plus all they’ve ever done is spam embassy requests.

There is nothing in your draft that makes The Embassy seem even remotely commendable.

Of course you are. You’ve seen a bandwagon so you’re going to jump on it.

May I suggest you drop this and return to your Scardino draft. That, at least, is honest work.

I found a typo.
OBSERVING that the excellent diplomacy conducted by the Embassy has caused it to be used as an interregional chat hub for regions from around NationStates to communicate - it's motto was "the largest connector of diversity amongst regions, connecting thousands to each other through a single, neutral point.",

I feel like the orange bit is pushing the limits of Rule 2 acceptability, which isn't to say that I think it's a violation (I'm too unfamiliar with the new ruleset to confidently make those sorts of assertions) but rather just that I think it would be better if rephrased to "used as an interregional communications hub for regions from around NationStates".

I can more confidently say that, speaking in terms of both grammar and most citation formats, the period can and should be dropped from the quotation (which I honestly don't think is particularly necessary).
BELIEVING that such extraordinary diplomacy merits recognition by this council,

I've recently said, both publicly and privately, that I've always liked the Embassy and what they were trying to do and my personal region, like many others, has recently lost a 5+ year old embassy due to the raid (which I'm not going to hide the fact that I piled in support of). Despite this, I think Tim's comment best summarizes my opinion on this matter: even at their height, and ignoring certain unsavory attributes, the Embassy was never commendable in anything more than an informal capacity. Refuge Island's comment about C/Cing based on the past rather than the present and BBD's comment on their lack of intolerance of fascism are both additional counter-arguments that, in my mind, put this issue to rest.

Yeah no. Just no. Just because there's a bunch of temporary spotlights on a region does not make them remotely commendable, sorry mate
