[DRAFT] [ABANDONED] Repeal: “Commend Common Territories”

Postby Krishna Rashtra » Wed Jun 19, 2019 7:33 am

Repeal: “Commend Common Territories”

A resolution to repeal previously passed legislation.

Resolution: SC#284

———

The Security Council,

Acknowledging that while Security Council Resolution #234 was drafted and passed in order to recognize the efforts of the Empire of Common Territories to construct a livable society for their citizens, the nation in question does so at the expense of other peoples;

Reminded that the Empire of Common Territories is a nation that champions and defends the policies of imperialism and colonialism, two systems that induce the subjugation, domination, and exploitation of peoples;

Citing that the Empire of Common Territories engages in political foul play in order to systematically destabilize a region and fulfill its imperialistic ambitions as seen in the Empire’s conquest of the Cornellian Empire;

Noting that the Empire of Common Territories is the “top-tiered leader” of the Imperion Coalition, an alliance of likeminded imperialist and monarchist nations that, apart from defending the previously mentioned policies, pledges to assist members states in their expansion;

Convinced that the Empire of Common Territories, by actively promoting its expansionist creed, is not worthy of commendation;

Hereby repeals Security Council Resolution #234 “Commend Common Territories”.

Imho, if a repeal relies solely on ideological grounds, the presence of any clause that cedes ground to the opposing side works against the proposal, even if it is only meant to explain why a commendation was enacted. I would recommend either removing these clauses or combining them into a single clause and adding something along the lines of "however they do this at the expense of other peoples". That way it sends the same message you intended, but makes it clear from the start that this resolution disagrees with the Commendation.

For example:
Acknowledging that while Security Council Resolution #234 was drafted and passed in order to recognize the efforts of the Empire of Common Territories to construct a livable society for their citizens, said nation does so at the expense of other peoples;

Reminded that the Empire of Common Territories is a nation that champions and defends the policies of imperialism and colonialism, two systems that induce the subjugation, domination, and exploitation of peoples;

There will be WA members who disagree with your assessment of imperialism and colonialism, so it may be worth expanding your argument as to why endorsement of these values disqualifies TECT from commendation. Your lack of an oxford comma disturbs me. Additionally, I think you may want to consider adding a qualifying description to "peoples", such as "aboriginal" or "native" (though this specific term is highly associated with Gameplay and may give off the wrong impression).
Citing that the Empire of Common Territories engages in political foul play in order to fulfill its imperialistic ambitions as seen in the Empire’s conquest of the Cornellian Empire;

I have no idea what you are referring to, so it may be worth your time to further explain what exactly they did in this instance.
Noting that the Empire of Common Territories is the “top-tiered leader” of the Imperion Coalition, an alliance of likeminded imperialist and monarchist nations that, apart from defending the previously mentioned policies, pledges to assist members states in their expansion;

I don't see any structural/grammatical problems with the rest of these clauses, though personally I prefer to capitalize "Repeals".

Anyways, I do not know much about TECT and his behaviors and thus cannot say much on his behalf, but I do know quite a bit about the Security Council, and thus know that convincing the WA to repeal a Roleplayer Commendation on purely ideological grounds will be an uphill battle. Aside from the explicit reasons given for commending TECT, there is the implicit reason that is inherent to all Security Council Commendations/Condemnations: recognition of the player behind the nation as an important and (in the case of Commendations) positive addition to the Nationstates community. Ideological arguments, based solely on roleplay behavior, will not cast any ill-repute on the player behind the nation and thus will not corrode the foundation on which the rest of the arguments are built.

I do not have particularly strong feelings on SC #284, and voted for it simply because I have noticed in passing that TECT seems to be a well respected player. However, I am not convinced, from an IC or OOC perspective, that the Empire of Common Territories does not deserve recognition, and thus will have to express opposition to this repeal attempt; though, as usual, I will offer feedback as best I can as this draft evolves.

I understand. I wasn't quite aware of how known this nation was out-of-character and I only interpreted the resolution from an in-character perspective. That being said, I'll withhold this draft for the time being.

Nonetheless, I thank you for the detailed reply! <3

I just wished to say before I made an IC response (which will be sooner or later given time allowed), that much of the canon on Cornellia is out the window. When I first made a colony there after being grandfathered in, I made a promise to be active in their community. Years later when the region revamped I had already become fairly inactive in region and when time came to find a spot on the new map, I told them there was no need to because I didn't wish to rob any places an actual active player wished to have; I strongly believed in my promise and felt I kept it by doing this. Other than the invasion storyline made to detail our origins in the region, I have yet to receive any nullification of canon with players there, including with the NPC Damoclea. In fact, their founder was more than happy to retain my colony there and I'm sure if I wanted my old colony back, I'd be welcomed to have it. But what I've seen is that anyone and everyone in Cornellia does accept me into canon where I've done things in the past not regarding said original colony there. Anyways, you would have to speak with them to find canon that you could use for your resolution. I suggest Adirion (Hitmaneyan) as we set up a nice backstory in the past related to TECT conquests in their continent that failed; last I saw (a few years back) he did not remove it nor the agreement we made to keep it canon until either one of us wished to back out of it.

But concerning an official response to this repeal, I will present one soon IC in the form of an open letter. It mite be lengthy, but hopefully not too much for yall to enjoy. I would have posted here and in the commend thread, but I was told that doing such would be bad form; I post here now because I was told I should pen something to defend the resolution since it has my name on it. But with that all said, I wish to thank everyone who voted to bestow such an honor onto myself. Not to rob the purpose of this thread, but this is likely the only place I'll be able to publicly state my thanks outside of few venues.
