[DRAFT] Repeal: Commend Haiku

Postby Hillbillica » Wed Apr 24, 2019 9:49 am

Though we can enjoy
Fun, well-written poetry
By the fine Haiku

It is just absurd
That they get a shiny badge
For nothing but this

We should not commend
Something of no consequence
Even if it’s fun

Recognizing, too,
That “Admiring afar”
Has six syllables

(Usually, mind you -
Unless you’re a hillbilly
But you’re likely not)

Which just goes against
The traditional meter
Of five-seven-five

This misuse of words
Is found in the first line of
Their commendation

Which, for reference, is
Also written, fittingly,
In the haiku form

If someone should list
Haiku’s other achievements
Comprehensively

One might find that they
Deserve recognition by
This community

Sadly, due to this,
The Security Council
Should not let this stand

Thus, Commend Haiku
By the SC’s hand, will be
Rendered null and void.

(Please don’t be too harsh.
If you criticize, then please
make it constructive.)

(I’ve edited this.
Comments might be out of date.
Disregard those ones.)

Erm, this is certainly unique I guess. Why do you want to remove their commendation? Also, why write a haiku for repealing a resolution written as a haiku? :p

Edit: And I think the badge reference is a rules violation for mentioning it as a game (R4c?)? Possibly not though, or you could replace badge with trophy.

Nice try but possibly illegal for an R3 violation. You don’t state explicitly in the operative clause what you are repealing, you just say “this law”.

Well, considering what other nations have been commended for, I figured it wasn’t enough to commend Haiku simply for writing haikus. Although it’s a nice quality, there wasn’t anything else listed to really be considered worth commending. For example, you wouldn’t commend Realm of the Whispering Winds for being pirate-themed, or commend The Invaders for writing an acrostic proposal. I wrote mine as haikus as a joke, and since i’m not necessarily seeking a commendation, i figured this wasn’t hypocrisy.

I’ll take your badge advice, but it might be difficult, considering replacing “badge” with “trophy” would ruin the meter.

Well dang. I’ll have to get on that. Thanks for the advice!

As a writer myself I can only oppose this. For me it's not even about the content of the proposal. I just have an appreciation for Haiku's commitment to poetry.

Does anyone benefit from repealing this?

Haiku probably wants to keep their commendation more than anyone wants it repealed. Opposed.

Alright yeah I’m gonna trash this idea
On the grounds that it’s mean-spirited and unnecessary, I’m not going to continue
I suppose I just got excited about a technical flaw in their commendation and wanted to get some clout but this was an underhanded status-grab
Haiku doesn’t deserve to have their commendation revoked

I think that’s for the best.

Your draft was a good attempt but even if you had made it legal I doubt it would have got much support.

First of all, you're wrong:
"Ad-mi-ring" is three beats long.
Don't confuse people.

Two: you're just jealous.
Nothing stops you dropping by!
You, too, can poem!

So let me speak clear
And for all the world to hear:
"FUCK THIS!!!", with a sneer.

Edit: I wrote this before seeing that the author abandoned this idea. Did not mean to pile on or be redundant. The sentiment, however, stands.
