[DEFEATED] Commend The North Pacific

Postby Tinhampton » Tue Jan 31, 2017 11:19 am

This resolution was at vote between the 16th and 20th of March, 2017. It was defeated by a margin of 9,055 votes (about 58%) to 6,564 (about 42%).
THE SECURITY COUNCIL:

BELIEVING that the largest of the world's five feeders, the North Pacific (TNP), is a shining example to the world, especially in the art of combining freedom with security;

NOTING that, after the various coups d'état it suffered in its early years – inflicted by the likes of Great Bight, Pixiedance, The Crimson Order, Shoeless Joe and Durkadurkiranistan I & II (many of which are cited by past Security Council resolutions*) – TNP have endeavored after each liberation to recover and prevent future coups in a manner consistent with its democratic heritage, such as:
  • The creation of a Bill of Rights which recognises national sovereignty;
  • A regional constitution, which has changed over the years but which has consistently ensured that TNP remains a free, democratic and open region;
  • Upholding the rule of law and the supremacy of the legislature;
  • Establishing a Security Council of trusted and influential residents (responsible to TNP and its constitution) which oversee the region's security and respond to threats as they arise;
  • A contemporary endorsement trading scheme which encourages (rather than discourages) endorsement trading between WA nations; ultimately aiding in TNP's retention of newcomers and its overall regional security, in addition to the average nation in TNP amassing 16 endorsements;
*: See SC#33, 34, 49, 63, 129, 168, and 169.

REALISING that TNP's delegate endorsement counts are double that of regular contemporary counts for feeders, currently standing at over 1,250 (one catalyst of which may have been a mass campaign to endorse then-delegate [nation=short]HMS Unicorn[/nation] at the end of 2014; momentum which once saw an 85% delegate endorsement rate amongst TNP's WA nations, as well as a rise in endorsements from 490 to over 600);

NOTICING that TNP is now home to many Commended nations (or puppets thereof), including: [nation=short]Astarial[/nation], [nation=short]Flemingovia[/nation], [nation=short]McMasterdonia[/nation], [nation=short]Renaissancistic People[/nation], [nation=short]Eluvatar[/nation], [nation=short]Mousebumples[/nation], [nation=short]Evil Wolf[/nation], and [nation=short]Sanctaria[/nation];

OBSERVING that TNP is unusual in having a voluntary, official regional religion: Flemingovianism, which requires its observants to worship the nation of Flemingovia as a god;

PRAISING TNP's efforts to keep its resident nations up to date with regional events, through the many dispatches (including regional census results and WA vote recommendations) put out by [nation=short]The Northern Light[/nation], and formerly by the North Pacific Wire; and

REMEMBERING how the North Pacific Army (NPA) have helped their Feeder and Sinker allies in times of crisis:
  • April 2015: During the occupation of Lazarus by the New Lazarene Order (backed by the Pacific), the NPA provided material and tactical support for the Lazarene Underground State;
  • Summer 2013: TNP opposed the rogue delegacy of [nation=short]the Dourian Embassy[/nation] in Osiris, and the subsequent Gatesville occupation; and
  • April 2013: The NPA supplied key military aid to its allies, the Coalition of the South Pacific, in its fight against the South Pacific People's Republic (SPPR). Thus, the Security Council:

HEREBY COMMENDS the North Pacific.

TNP provided key material and tactical support to the Lazarene Underground State, an organisation comprised of various natives of Lazarus against the NLO, to help them regain control of the region.
  • In June/July 2013, [nation=short]The Dourian Embassy[/nation] couped Osiris after losing the delegacy elections; TDE was then passed between notable nations in Gatesville before landing in the control of Durkadurkiranstan II. TNP stated opposition to the coup and support for incumbent delegate Cormac A Stark (now known to the world as [nation=short]Cormactopia II[/nation]), who was later helped to return to their rightful position after a month of endorsement-building.
  • In April 2013, TNP provided support and military aid to their native allies (the Coalition of the South Pacific), in order to assist [nation=short]Brutland and Norden[/nation]'s successful battle to gain more endorsements than rogue delegate Milograd and take over from them. Thus, the Security Council:

HEREBY COMMENDS the North Pacific.

THE SECURITY COUNCIL:

BELIEVING that the largest of the five feeders where all new nations are founded, the North Pacific (TNP), is a shining example to the world, particularly in the art of combining freedom with security;

*: See SC#33, 34, 49, 63, 129, 168, and 169.

REALISING that TNP's delegate endorsement counts are double that of regular contemporary counts for feeders, currently standing at over 1,200 (one catalyst of which may have been a mass campaign to endorse then-delegate [nation=short]HMS Unicorn[/nation] at the end of 2014; momentum which once saw an 85% delegate endorsement rate amongst the region's WA nations, as well as a rise in endorsements from 490 to over 600);

ACKNOWLEDGING that TNP is currently home to many nominees of past Commendations (or colonies thereof), including: [nation=short]Astarial[/nation], [nation=short]Flemingovia[/nation], [nation=short]McMasterdonia[/nation], [nation=short]Renaissanctistic People[/nation], [nation=short]Eluvatar[/nation], [nation=short]Mousebumples[/nation], [nation=short]Evil Wolf[/nation], and [nation=short]Sanctaria[/nation];

OBSERVING that TNP is unusual among regions in having a voluntary state religion: Flemingovianism, which requires its participants to worship the nation of Flemingovia as a god;

PRAISING the efforts of TNP to keep its resident nations up to date with events in the region, through its many dispatches (including regional census results and WA vote recommendations) put out by [nation=short]The Northern Light[/nation], and historically by the North Pacific Wire; and

CONCLUDING by summarising how the North Pacific Army have helped their Feeder and Sinker allies in times of serious crisis:
  • In April 2015, Lazarus's WA Delegate [nation=short]Stujenske[/nation] declared the New Lazarene Order (supported by the Pacific) and suspended the regional constitution. TNP provided key material and tactical support to the Lazarene Underground State, an organisation comprised of various natives of Lazarus against the NLO, to help them regain control of the region.
  • In June/July 2013, [nation=short]The Dourian Embassy[/nation] (TDE) couped Osiris after narrowly losing the WA Delegacy elections; TDE was then passed between various notable nations in Gatesville, before landing in the control of Durkidurkastan II. TNP stated opposition to the coup and support for incumbent Pharoah Cormac A Stark (now known to the world as [nation=short]Cormactopia II[/nation]), who was later helped to return to their rightful position after a month of endorsement-building.
  • In April 2013, after [nation=short]Milograd[/nation] couped the South Pacific and declared it a Socialist Republic, TNP provided support and military aid to their native allies (the Coalition of the South Pacific) in order to assist native [nation=short]Brutland and Norden[/nation]'s successful battle to become the WA Delegate of the region. Thus, the Security Council:

HEREBY COMMENDS the North Pacific.

The Security Council,

Recalling perhaps the world's most widely-known fact, that all nations are founded in one of the five feeders, of which the North Pacific (TNP) is the largest;

Noting that after the various coups d'état it had suffered in its early years – inflicted by the likes of Great Bight, Pixiedance, The Crimson Order, Shoeless Joe and Durkadurkiranistan I & II; many of which are cited by previous Security Council resolutions* – TNP have endeavored after each liberation to recover and prevent future such events in a manner that was consistent with its democratic heritage, such as:
  • The creation of a Bill of Rights which recognises national sovereignty;
  • Upholding the rule of law and the supremacy of the legislature;
  • Establishing a Security Council of trusted and influential residents - responsible to the region and the constitution - which oversee the region's security and respond to threats as they arise;
  • A contemporary endorsement trading scheme which, rather than discouraging non-executive nations from gaining endorsements, encourages endorsement trading – ultimately aiding in TNP's retention of newcomers and its overall regional security, in addition to the average nation in TNP amassing 16 endorsements.
*: See SC#33, 34, 49, 63, 129, 168, and 169.

Realising that TNP's delegate endorsement counts has gone from the 500 or so typically seen of a feeder delegate just a few years ago to over 1,200 now (one catalyst of which may have been a mass campaign to endorse then-delegate HMS Unicorn at the end of 2014, a bump which once saw an 85% delegate endorsement rate amongst the region's WA nations, as well as a rise in endorsements from 490 to over 600);

Acknowledging that TNP is currently home to various nations which have been Commended by this august body, including Flemingovia, McMasterdonia, and Renaissancistic People (a nation that technically resides in Europeia, but which operates two colonies widely recognised in TNP, [nation=short]HMS Unicorn[/nation] and [nation=short]The Northern Light[/nation]);

Closely reading the many dispatches put out by The Northern Light, which publicises periodicals carrying notable, current statistics concerning TNP, as well as World Assembly vote recommendations that are reviewed and followed by hundreds of WA nations in TNP soon after new WA resolutions come to vote (therefore enabling TNP to be possibly the world's most influential region when it comes to WA voting); and

Not forgetting how the North Pacific Army have helped their Feeder and Sinker allies in their darkest hours, to conclude this list of awe-inspiring achievements by TNP:
  • In April 2015, the Lazarene WA Delegate Stujenske (which was supported by the New Lazarene Order, a long-standing puppet regime of the Pacific) conducted the condemnable (and, as per this august body, Condemnable) act of suspending the constitution of the People's Republic of Lazarus (PRL). After TNP released a statement supporting the Lazarene Underground State (made up of former notable nations from the PRL) and retracted embassies with the NLO regime, they aided in freeing Lazarus from NLO control, handing back power to the PRL.
  • In June/July 2013, the WA delegation of The Dourian Embassy (TDE) narrowly lost the Osiran WA Delegacy election to Cormac A Stark (currently known to the multiverse as Cormactopia II). Subsequently, the government of TDE was passed around various notable nations in Gatesville, before landing in the control of former rogue TNP delegate Durkidurkastan II. TNP stated support for incumbent Pharoah Cormac A Stark, who was later assisted to return to their rightful position after about a month of endorsement-building.
  • In April 2013, the WA Delegate of the South Pacific, Milograd (supported by Durkidurkastan II), showed their colours as a rogue delegate, ruthlessly banjecting hundreds of natives of TSP and suspending all regional laws. Having again proclaimed support for the native Coalition of the South Pacific, TNP was to supply military aid to their allies in order to assist native Brutland and Norden's successful battle to become the WA Delegate of the region. Thus, the Security Council:

HEREBY COMMENDS the North Pacific.

The Security Council,

Recalling perhaps the most widely-known fact in the multiverse, that all nations are founded in one of the five "feeders," of which The North Pacific (TNP) is one;

Applauding TNP's high nation retention rate, which has led to them having over 9,000 nations in the region (the most in the world);

Without any doubt that the World Assembly Development Program has helped TNP have one of the highest WA endorsement rates in the world (currently fourth in the world), with the average nation in TNP holding 22 endorsements as a result of endorsement exchanging (even though the World Census counts both WA and non-WA nations in the endorsement average tallies);

Expanding on this point to recognise that TNP's delegate endorsement counts has gone from the 500 or so typically seen of a feeder delegate just a few years ago to over 1,200 now (one catalyst of which may have been a mass campaign to endorse then-delegate HMS Unicorn at the end of 2014, a bump which once saw an 85% delegate endorsement rate amongst the region's WA nations, as well as a rise in endorsements from 490 to over 600);

Noting that TNP is currently home to various nations which have been Commended by this august body, including Flemingovia, McMasterdonia, and Renaissanctistic People (a nation that technically resides in Europeia, but which operates two colonies widely recognised in TNP, [nation=short]HMS Unicorn[/nation] and [nation=short]The Northern Light[/nation]);

Closely reading the many dispatches put out by The Northern Light, which publicises periodicals carrying notable, current statistics concerning TNP, as well as World Assembly vote recommendations that are reviewed by hundreds of WA nations in the North Pacific soon after new WA resolutions come to vote;

Believing that, after frequent takeovers of TNP's government in the latter part of the 2000s (in addition to another one in 2013, and the "Puppetmaster" operation in 2004 to protect the region from the New Pacific Order), The North Pacific is now a successful and stable region (in no small part thanks to the work of the region's Security Councillors to keep the region safe from potential threats); and

Elaborating on some of the North Pacific Army's more recent feats, to conclude this list of awe-inspiring achievements by TNP, including:
  • In October 2016, helping in the raid of The NSIA, the action that introduced the Coalition Against the Ideology of Nazism (better known as CAIN) to the world;
  • In October/November 2015, aiding in the raid of The Greater German Reich, one of the larger and more notable raids in recorded history;
  • In September 2015, assisting in the successful defence of fellow feeder The West Pacific from DEN invaders;
  • In December 2014, being one of many militaries to engage in a symbolic liberation of Anne Frank; and
  • In June/July 2014, playing a major part in the invasion and subsequent lockdown of Nazi Europe, one of the largest such regions in the multiverse:

HEREBY COMMENDS The North Pacific.

Recognising that TNP's longstanding Bill of Rights is an extensive but simple document, detailing the rights that each nation in TNP has: the rights to national sovereignty, a fair trial in front of regional courts, and the protection of the right to vote;

Noting that TNP is currently home to various nations which have been Commended by this august body, including Flemingovia, McMasterdonia, and Renaissanctistic People (a nation that technically resides in Europeia, but which operates two colonies widely recognised in TNP, [nation=short]HMS Unicorn[/nation] and [nation=short]The Northern Light[/nation]);

Not forgetting that TNP's wide and diverse infrastructure - including the Regional Assembly to debate laws, the Court to place said laws into practise, and the North Pacific Army to engage in a variety of military operations - offers opportunities for nations in TNP to engage with their region in multiple ways; and

Saddened that The North Pacific as a whole has not yet been recognised by the World Assembly:

The Security Council HEREBY COMMENDS The North Pacific.

The code is not broken there. That is how you would format a nation to appear without its pretitle gameside - for example HMS Unicorn would come out as "The Titanium of HMS Unicorn" (with the flag) using the [nation][/nation] tags, but as just "HMS Unicorn" (again, with the flag) using the [nation=short][/nation] tags.

Any reference to TNP's Court which seeks to portray it in a positive light is either based on a gross misunderstanding or alternatively a deliberate attempt to mislead voters.

Shouldn't a commendation of a region also discuss what said region has done for other regions?

I mean, I know the NPA has had some successes under it's belt. Talk about those, maybe?
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

What, for example? I do at least know of the Nazi Europe invasion.

Honestly, not an expert on the NPA, and I've been gone from the game for a few years until just recently anyway. But my point is that why TNP is a pretty impression region that has done a lot for it's members - and is fairly attractive as a region (which is why I'm there now, having recently become a citizen), WASC commendations need to be about the region's interregional achievements as much as it's internal successes - the idea is that the whole world is commending this region, after all.

Elaborate.

TNP's Court has historically been the laughingstock of NS, even to its own citizens. Case after case botched, rulings handed down that didn't make any sense, and Court Justices/Prosecutors disappearing in the middle of trials.

Belschcraft being famous for that.

Belschaft was my defense attorney in my trial, which I won. I represented King Durk the Awesome along with my cocounsel Treize, which we won. I also represented some other nation, which I won. The point is that TNP's Court is a joke.

Draft #1, Version 2 is now up. Now with less references to the TNP court and more references to the TNP army!

Commending / Condemning a feeder? That's crazy talk.

It's going to be hard to pass being it is a GCR, but if you were going to try you'd need to remove the bits about high population and really anything that could be said just because it's a feeder. Would need to add a lot more content about TNP's community, and their role in NS over the many years. Likely need more political weigh too, a good co-author or two could help.

And on second thoughts, any region can have a BoR which states the non-bolded (i.e. national sovereignty and the right to vote), but it appears to be common to many and respected by all (even outside TNP). As a last-ditch change to Draft #1, Version 2, I have nuked the crap out of said section.

Your delegate doesn't have enough votes to ensure a solid stack. :(

And his delegate is currently abstaining from voting whilst ensuring a peaceful transition of power in TEP. But regardless, this thread is about my proposal to Commend TNP, not Todd.

TNP is a nice GCR. But I can't see anything worthy of commendation in this draft.

So, other than "TNP isn't really commendable" (or words to that effect), does anybody else have complaints?

We are a pretty cool region, but there isn't much to commend here. I don't understand how having a bunch of endorsements makes us commendation worthy. Arguing that 1/3000 nations in the region are commended means we all deserve a commendation is a bad argument, because just because 3 people are great does not mean the whole region is. Yes, we became stable, a lot of regions are stable. For the invasions part, I don't know much about Nationstates before I got here, but it seems you listed 4 regions that were Nazis as regions that we raided. Many other regions currently oppose Nazis and aren't getting commended. I don't know anything about the DEN invasion, but I would like to point out that helping allies is not commendation worthy either, and it is likely that a lot of regions helped.

Voting against.

That being my original point. The only reason you chose the North Pacific is to ensure a Plem stack in favor. All I read here is a badge hunt. A very nicely worded one, but a badge hunt none the less.

I am certain I can convince our incomming delegate to vote for a commendation of the glorious region of The East Pacific.

:lol2: I believe I was charged for flying TNP's flag. And Eluvatar was charged for treason for trying to stop a Blue Wolf coup attempt. There's so many hilarious court cases in TNP.

I don't see the evidence you've provided in any such way suggests TNP is commendable. So, they're big. Good for them. The Northern Light is a pretty unremarkable newsletter. And their anti-Nazi missions have been glorified preening. When the Anne Frank mission happened, r3n refused to pursue the mission without an 'official statement' on behalf of all members attending the liberation - and the statement was this wild anti-fascist triumphant glorification of a liberation of a two-nation puppet region - I'll never forget how determined they were to capitalize on the memory of a young murdered heroine for cheap publicity points in a text-based game for fuck sakes. I mean, having an official statement on behalf of all members was strange enough (usually each attendee does their own spiel or ditto's), but forcing a particular message - the proto-CAIN moralism - was as typical as you could get to their kind of politics. I regretted helping them get their numbers for that liberation after that messaging bullshit (it was basically a fake liberation anyway given there was no native community).

I don't really feel like a point by point refutation of this nonsense, but I just wanted to chime in to say that there is almost nothing accurate in this entire paragraph. Even other defenders have said as much.
