TBH a great deal of the outrage stems from the unprecedented (I believe?) use of liberations as weapons to raid RP regions. Vulnerable RP regions have always been getting raided from time to time and those seem to have been largely tolerated.

Admittedly the whole 'RPers getting dragged into RD' thing is unavoidable because of the way the site's mechanics were built. RPers aren't so much being dragged into RD as they were (inadvertently, or not?) left inside the scope of RD as the site developed over the years. And that is a fundamental mechanics issue which, frankly, is better reserved for another thread.

And I might add that I personally consider a rectification of the game mechanics in that regard long overdue.

Being a "roleplaying" region doesn't grant you any sort of immunity.

Why shouldn't it? I have no desire to run around screwing with people to get my jollies off, nor do I have the time to get involved in defending, there's always been an unspoken agreement RP regions are to be left alone
