[Late Roman Empire]

The only female ruler in the history of the Late Roman Empire was Aelia Priscilla. She ascended the throne in 1753 and was deposed in 1770 and put to death for her temerity in usurping a male prerogative by the Augustus of the West, Romulus Quinctius Saturninus (aka Saturninus I)who then became of the few later unifying Roman Emperors (most have ruled either East or West, not both).

Her 17 year reign was volatile and full of civil unrest, as well as senatorial plots and foreign border-skirmishes. In fact, the Senate of Constantinople along with the Sacred Consistory damned her memory and removed her name from the official fasti of Augusti and consuls.

So unpopular was the Empress that there was practically no resistance from the Eastern legions to the Western "invasion": these simply defected en masse to Saturninus. Nor did civilians oppose him: many welcomed him as a liberator. Crowds of Romans of both sexes turned out in Constantinople to demonstrate their support for the new regime.

Many of her edicts were repealed, but some of the more useful ones were re-issued by the new Augustus in his name (with some key changes).

Incidentally, however, many in the clergy were among her few supporters, though there were several bishops and priests who opposed her. Despite being considered usurper by the State on all official documents, she has been proposed for canonization as a saint several times. It is unlikely, however, that this will happen during this principate, due to the Emperor's known reservations about female succession (it's okay in Federalist Rome, but that is another country with different laws).

In her private life, Priscilla never married and is believed to have taken a vow of celibacy, dying a virgin. She was 50 years of age when she was beheaded in the Forum Novum (a building designed by the Emperor Valentinian I). An ordinary cavalry saber was used for the execution.
