Actually, this measure was supported by the military soldiers and citizens alike during a vote. Soldiers would preffer to die than be interrogated by the enemy, and since their armor is impossible to remove without a Mechanostasis Chamber, it was decided to implant the explosive device so that both the soldier dies a honourable death, and the suit is destroyed, killing any enemies nearby.

the protection a helmet offers is nothing to brag about anyway as they are often only able to handle shrapnel.

Better than nothing, though. A company in the US apparently has managed to produce a helmet that is able to stop a 7.62x51mm NATO round. The Western Weyard ABH (Advanced Battle Helmet) is capable of that feat, too.

four years ago, our air force and land army were merged to form divisions within the navy, which is now our "only" military force. Individual islandstates usually employ their own home/city guard and artillery but there is no national "army" or "air force", only marine corps, armoured corps, and airbourne corps within the navy.
