One of our most famous branches of military are the Royal Mounted Bear Force.
Though it may seem ridiculous to have soldiers riding bears to passerby, the bears are sentient, so it's all good.
The bears and riders also share living quarters when deployed. This occasionally leads to mauling.

Not seeing the ridiculousness here. In fact I think it's not a halfbad idea; I know damn well I would desire a decent pay if it were my job to get shot at liberally.

It really is ridiculous, politicians are paid so much more than other civil servants because they require far more education. While any high school graduate (and sometimes high school dropouts) can join the military, politicians are rarely elected unless they have a college degree. If you lower the pay of politcians no one with any real education will want to become one unless they are corrupt, and if you raise military pay significantly you will have to greatly increase your budget.

Facial hair is enforced as part of the uniform. Women are given hormone therapy to induce it. It helps with the insulation in our harsh climes.

Additionally, we do not use flamethrowers as weapons, indeed our citizens consider the idea to be absurd. Instead, our military uses flamethrowers to carve bunkers and embankments out of the terrain.

That's the point though, in our nation, the flamethrower was developed as a carving and construction tool, and a Polar Islandstates Mark Flamethrower does not see the large throw of flame suitable for combat, more a controlled flame used for precise ice-engineering. You could of course use one in combat, but to a Polar Islandstates citizen that would be the same confusing decision as a RL soldier choosing a spade or a pneumatic drill to take into battle, rather than a gun.

They use incendiary rocket launchers now. Flamethrowers haven't been used since the 70's.

Officers and NCOs are an exception since officers also have to go to college and NCOs have been in the military for a long time, but regular grunts don't need any real experience in most armies. Also, education/training required generally trumps risk, hence doctors being paid more than LA police officers, or fire fighters.

"Charge in the name of an invisible being!" < As an atheist would call it.

I apologize severely but God does not want you to go down in infamy in his name.

Zealotry is the utilization of belief as a weapon, to rally the people to a false cause and use it as a weapon against them.

Many many people would disagree with that claim. Beyond the multiple interpretations of the will of the Christian, Jewish, and Muslim god, there are other gods, that actually do want you to die, preferably fighting for them.

It isn't barbarianism if it was them who didn't co-operate

Just as it is kosher to strap mutineers to cannons and blow them apart with roundshot.
