I have to agree that if possible you should turn the other cheek. The thing is that the "defender" is as likely to kill one of his own children as he is to kill the attacker. There's no escaping responsibility.

Only if he's using some sort of explosive weapon inside a narrow hallway and/or his children are standing right in front of the attacker, and jumping up and down on a caffeine rush.

That's why you train to not miss. And use weapons with HIGH knockdown, low penetration (like hollopoint .45)
