THE INDEPENDENT SOCIALIST NATION OF GANDOOR
Gandoor was discovered by explorers in the year 1563. The native people of the land, whom were dubbed Gandoorians, had recently suffered a large epidemic and greeted these explorers with many gifts and helped them begin settling the land. In exchange of course, the explorers had to engage in sexual relations with Gandoorian women to help repopulate. Something that, according to a diary, they were perfectly fine with.
The explorers allowed the natives to mingle amongst themselves and they educated them in the language of English and the natives taught them their own language. Eventually, the first settlement of Gandoor was established, Juastintown.
As the time went on, the natives became more and more assimilated into the explorer's society, till eventually, they were completely assimilated into the “proper” society. The only way you could tell a native Gandoorian from a settler was the natives bright red hair and bright red eyes.
After 100 years of existence, the population of Gandoor was around 18 million, with about 4.3 million of the native population. It was during this time that the people of Gandoor, including the natives, became dubbed “Gandoorese”. The native language of Gandoor itself became renamed from “Gandoorian” to “Gandoorese” during this time as well. Another event that happened during this time, around the year 1667, a great political change occurred in the land. A form of a monarchy was put into place, Gandoor was to be ruled by a Nzard, as opposed to the High Council which had existed since 1566.
Under the reign of the Nzards, Gandoor achieved a level of prosperity it had never seen before. The population of the country surged, the capital city tripled in size and population in only 150 years, and great changes in the rights of women and minorities in Gandoor occurred during this period.
However, like you would expect, all good things had to come to an end. In the year 1857, Nzard Joseph IV came into power and the economy of Gandoor suffered a massive drop. Before Joseph came into power, something as simple as a loaf of bread only cost 2.50 gdyns and anyone could afford it. But, only a year after he came into power, the same loaf of bread would cost 250 gdyns and only the rich could afford it, the poor were left to eat the crusts in the garbage. Joseph promised he would attempt to reform the economy to its former glory, but tragically, he could not fulfill this promise as he suddenly died of a heart attack in 1879, at the age of 67.
Followed by his son Nzard William II, who refused to enact what his father had promised to do. Instead, he lowered taxes for the upper-class and raised taxes on the working-class to nearly 100%. Eventually, the working-class and native Gandoorians were forced to live in small one-room shacks, sometimes with around twelve people in one shack. With the lack of proper shelter, food, and healthcare, diseases such as smallpox spread rampant throughout these “Shackcitys”, as they came to be called.
Eventually, the noted politician Chiba Masato, began to go around to Shackcitys and inform the impoverished that in order to get out of this Hellhole of oppression, they would need to unite and the workers would have to rise and refuse any compromise and help bring down the current regime.
After traveling to nearly all Shackcitys and word of Masato's plan spread, the working-class gathered everything they could carry on their backs and began the journey to Gandoor's capital. Upon reaching the capital city, they marched up to the Nzard Palace and were stopped by the Royal Guard, who prevented access to the palace. They stood there for nearly an hour until one brave, unknown person stepped up, used an antique revolver to fire a shot pointblank at one of the guards and smashed the butt of the revolver against the head of the other. This unknown person then turned around to the crowd and shouted to them “Socialism shall win!”
The palace was overtaken by the workers and Nzard William II was captured and imprisoned. Two weeks later, Chiba Masato gave a speech at the former Nzard Palace and ended the speech with the now famous lines “Today marks the end of your suffering! Today marks the death of the old regime! Long live Socialism! Long live Gandoor! Long live freedom!” During this speech, Nzard William II was executed by guillotine and his mother Rebecca was exiled out of the country.
On October 12th, 1902, four years after the Gandoor Revolution, Masato was almost unanimously elected as the first ruler of this new government and on January 1st, 1903, the Independent Socialist Nation of Gandoor was officially established with Chiba Masato as the first Commander. Commander Masato immediately began to better living conditions for the native Gandoorese and the working-class. Farms were seized by the state and all produce and food grown on them was now handed out to the workers, many of whom were still living in the Shackcitys. The economy of Gandoor experienced a large growth during the five years of Masato's reign.
On February 16th, 1908, Commander Masato was found dead in his bedroom at the age of 59. Emergency elections were held for his successor and Grigori Nikolaev became the second commander of Gandoor.
Commander Nikolaev furthered the economic reforms brought on by his predecessor and also made segregation illegal in the nation. He established the set pay for all jobs, 150000 gdyns a year, which is the same today; he also openly promoted understanding of other cultures and beliefs and made classes which taught information about religions of the world mandatory in all schools in Gandoor. Under Nikolaev's rule, people were free to practice whatever religion they pleased, although the official religion of Gandoor was state-supported atheism. He ordered the construction of neighborhoods and housing units for the homeless and was regarded as being a true visionary by the people. Nikolaev was also notable for his sexuality, as he was openly bisexual and had several relationships, with both men and women. He is also the person who separated Gandoor into eight yons.
In 1938, after serving four consecutive terms, Nikolaev opted not to run for reelection in the 1938 Gandoorese elections. During his final months in office, his approval rating was 97%, a number which still hasn't been beaten by any of his successors.
Nikolaev's successor was Stefan Ivanov. Ivanov was noted for his strict policies while in office and later has been acknowledged as being a dictator. He imprisoned numerous amounts of people who were opposed to his government, including Grigori Nikolaev. Two months after Nikolaev was imprisoned, he was executed by a firing squad. Commander Ivanov then began a large campaign to completely abolish religious freedom. Churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples were demolished, religious texts were regularly burned, and people of importance to religion were exiled or sent to forced labour camps.
Ivanov also began a propaganda campaign to turn the public, most of whom supported Nikolaev, against Nikolaev. He pointed out the similarities between Nikolaev and the former Nzards of the country and referred to him as Nzard Grigori I. He also said that the economic and social reforms of his predecessor was simply just a ruse for the country become a capitalistic society, once more exploiting the workers.
Commander Ivanov died on April 6th, 1949. His successor was Chiba Kaito. Commander Kaito reversed many of Ivanov's policies, most notably the one banning religion in Gandoor. Most of Ivanov's political prisoners were freed and Kaito issued a public apology for all the wrong done by his predecessor.
In 1951, the small island of Likah was colonized by the Independent Socialist Nation of Gandoor and was separated into four yons.
In 1953, three yons of Gandoor, along with two smaller islands near the country that belonged to other yons and two yons of Likah seceded from the nation and formed the Free States of Gandoor. This began a short civil war between Communist Gandoor and Capitalist Gandoor.
It was clear from the beginning that Communist Gandoor would prove victorious, as the rebels were severely under-armed. Only three months after the beginning of the war, Gandoorese troops marched into the capital of the Free States of Gandoor, Jou City and placed it under the control of the Socialist government. Regardless of this, the war continued for two more months and finally concluded with the Commander of Likah surrendering to advancing naval forces and the Free States of Gandoor flag was lowered for the final time.
In 1962, Commander Kaito ran for reelection, but lost to Grigori Semenov, the first person to be elected Commander of Gandoor born after the establishment of the current government, being born in 1909. The 1962 elections were also notable for the election of the first woman prime minister, Chelsea Slatworth. Not many notable events happened during Semenov's reign, except it was during his reign as Commander that it was decided that the Commander, Co-Commander, and Prime Minister of Gandoor could only serve two six-year terms, in order to prevent an abuse of power.
In 1968, Johnathan McFatton was elected Commander of Gandoor, McFatton is notable for being the father of current Gandoor Commander Reginald D. McFatton. Much like his predecessor, few notable events occurred during his reign. The most notable was increasing the amount of representatives in the Forum from 2 per yon to 4 as well as adding 2 per each yon of Likah, bringing the new total of Forum Representatives to 32.
1972 was a notable year in the technology sector of Gandoor, as the nation's first computer GAN-DOOR was constructed. The computer was the size of a small room and had a total memory of 1028 kilobytes. The GAN-DOOR was used to calculate formulas and such for Gandoor Laboratories.
Virtually no notable events occurred between 1972 and 1986. In 1986, the new Commander of Gandoor was Johnathan Frost. In 1988, Gandoor Technology released the first personal computer to the public, the GT Personal X-100. It retailed for the price of 500 gdyns and featured a (then impressive) memory of 5 megabytes, which was expandable to 50 if one bought the X-100 Expansion Memory Drive for 1500 gdyns. It is reported that only 250 Expansion Memory Drives were sold and the remaining stock of 15000 were scrapped.
Frost served until 1998, when Sakamoto Masato was elected the new commander of Gandoor. Commander Masato was famous as he was the great-great-great-great grandson of Chiba Masato. In 1999, Masato helped fund Gandoor's first ISP, Gandoor Internet, and by 2002, 80% of the country, as well as 70% of Likah, was connected to the Internet.
In 2004, the current commander of Gandoor was elected, Reginald D. McFatton. In 2003, it was reported that 100% of Gandoor and 100% of Likah was covered by Gandoor Internet and the first home video game consoles were released during that year as well.
In 2010, Commander McFatton was reelected and during a nationwide poll taken in July 2010, his approval rating was 93%, making him the second most approved commander in all of Gandoor history.
