Because it in the same manner of brawl like fighting style is more at home in a tavern between a couple of drunkards than a civilized war between two honourable opponents.

Well how would they deal with the sheer pressure of bodies a folkstrom would throw at them as they were forced aside by the numerous guardsmen pushing at them (and that is without the traditional pre-battle artillery barrage to shatter your lines)

Not to mention a armoured Cuirassier coming at you with his heavy pistols, or a lancer or even a hussar carrying home a charge, I would want to see your ordinators stand up to that!

This is all theoretical, since everyone in Aeten II's armed forces carry handheld shotguns (smaller ones, bout' the size of a pistol, VERY lethal in close range) And that our troops are told to ALWAYS fight as a unit, meaning anyone in closerange will have to fend off 9, pissed off men at the fact you killed their bro, and they have XM8s.

Knives are out-dated, performing no function in modern combat other than the opening of ration packs.
In our military and police, we don't use edged or blunt weapons at all. Riot control and other situations where a "night stick" is required are controlled by the use of firearms. In our country, we havn't had any riots for 40 years, since the last one saw over 50'000 protesters killed in a hail of machine-gun fire.
However, ours is a rural country. Many farmers own machetes and bowie knives.
