i would believe so, officers tend to lead these unit sizes (battalion is a full organisation level above platoon why not say "company" and "platoon" god knows)

Suffice it to say our troops are tenth level Ginaz Swordsmaster/Sardaukar/Fedaykin (Death Commandos) with Kindjals. A Kindjal is a large knife with a slightly curved double-blade approximately 20cm long. It is also classed as a short sword.

Gloves are a solution, but not perfect, because you have less feel and control over the blade. The more likely solution if they were actually seeing regular use in battle is hockey tape.]

Gloves do not affect control, and proper swordplay does not require feel. You are supposed to concentrate on the positioning of your wrist rather then how the handle feels, and otherwise let gravity and momentum do the work for you.

Ah, I have a sidesword, this probably explains my attachment to 'feel' with my skinny poking sword compared to a more of a cleaver.
