Days of the week

Postby Racrova » Wed Oct 06, 2010 11:07 am

What are the days of the week called in your nation's language?

In Racrova, the week starts on Tuesday because Sunday and Monday are dedicated to our highest deities (Mother Sun and Father Moon). Racrovan labor legislation puts certain restrictions on working on Sundays and Mondays. Devout Racrovans go to church on both days...
  • Tuesday = caifsim ("fire day") [ˈkaɪfsim]
  • Wednesday = azlazim ("water day") [aˈzlazim]
  • Thursday = sucsim ("wood day") [ˈsuksim]
  • Friday = talaxim ("stone day") [taˈlaʃim]
  • Saturday = doiazim ("air day") [doˈjazim]
  • Sunday = baterzim ("sun day") [baˈtɛrzim]
  • Monday = dumonsim ("moon day") [duˈmonsim]
OOC: The pattern has been inspired by the Japanese system.

We have four official languages in Dungeyland, and thousands of slightly different dialects. Our languages are English, Dangish, Latin and German. In Dangish:

Monday = Neuwek (literally, new week), pronounced no-veck
Tuesday = Erestay (a corruption of "Ares" (Greek word for Mars) and day), pronounced airs-day
Wednesday = Medwek (literally, mid-week), pronounced med-veck
Thursday = Aphrostay (a corruption of "Aphrodite" (Greek word for Venus) and day), pronounced aff-ros-day
Friday = Frestay (literally free day), pronounced fres-day
Saturday = Penastay (literally, fifth day, from when the week used to begin on a Tuesday), pronounced pens-day
Sunday = Ultistay (literally, last day), pronounced ultis-day.
Classical liberal.
  • My nation is called the Dangish Empire, officially
  • The population is circa 500 million
  • It is an imperial federation
  • The term Dungeyland while only technically referring to one colony can be used for the entire Empire (think Holland)
  • The Dangish Empire is a constitutional monarchy, our monarch is Queen Ellen I

Fatatatutti time is (not surprisingly) pretty relaxed:

  • Tomorrow = the standard designation for any future event - e.g. "I'll have that for you by tomorrow," = "It might eventually get done. Don't hold your breath."

  • Today = a fictional time, used to designate incredulity - e.g. "Oh, you wanted that today?" = "It ain't gonna happen."

  • The Weekend = a period of eight or nine days during which the speaker can not be contacted - e.g. "I'll get back to you after the weekend," = "My phone has been disconnected."

The sythen calendar has 37 weeks of 8 days a year, plus a 2 day harvest and new years festival, which falls outside the weeks. This fits in rather nicely with Cirundi's 298.15 day cycle around it's sun.... though leap year calculations are a bit more headache inducing. However, since Earth takes 365.249 days to orbit it's sun, and it's days are 24 Earth hours compared to 20.25 Earth hours long, well... that calender just kinda doesn't work. As such, on Nohn, the syth use the standard Gregorian calendar, complete with their own pronunciation of the Germanic days for names and months, though there has been some effort put forward to rename the 12 months after the mythical 12 godheads of sythen paganism,... though of course, given the widely divergent sythen shamanistic traditions, this would likely cause as many problems as it solves.

Also, many point out the irony of the syth revering to Germanic paganism to name their days. Most syth turn this back and say it's ironic that English Christians turn to Germanic paganism to name their days... despite how wrong that statement may be.

The days of the week in sythen are:

Monday=Wrozanigapan (Moon's day)
Tuesday=Wrozanituuz or Wrozanitear (Tyr's day)
Wednesday=Wrozaniweadz or Wrozanodaan (Odin's day)
Thursday=Wrozanituriz or Wrozanithoor (Thor's day)
Friday=Wrozanifiri or Wrozanifirig (Frig's day)
Saturday=Wronzizaatuuran (Saturn's day)
Sunday=Wrozanizun or Wrozanivaeden (Sun's day)

Kawaiians number, rather than name, the days of the week. On the other hand, we name the weeks of the month. The Kawaiian Ritual Calendar uses a lunar month of either 29 or 30 days long, and is reckoned from New Moon to New Moon like so:

1 Himechan -- New Moon sabbath, the day births are celebrated.
2 Himechan
3 Himechan
4 Himechan
5 Himechan
6 Himechan
7 Himechan
1 Jouchan -- First Quarter sabbath, the day graduations are held.
2 Jouchan
3 Jouchan
4 Jouchan
6 Jouchan
7 Jouchan
Mangetsu -- Full Moon sabbath, the day weddings are performed.
7 Kachan
6 Kachan
5 Kachan
4 Kachan
3 Kachan
2 Kachan
1 Kachan -- Last Quarter sabbath, the day retirements are celebrated.
7 Bachan
6 Bachan
5 Bachan
4 Bachan
3 Bachan
2 Bachan
1 Bachan -- Old Moon sabbath, the day funerals and memorials are held.

In 30-day months, Mangetsu ("Full Moon") is replaced by two days, Seigetsu ("Filling Moon") and Suigetsu ("Emptying Moon").

Also note that in the weeks of Himechan and Jouchan (1st and 2nd quarters), the days of the week count up from 1 to 7, while in the weeks of Kachan and Bachan (3rd and 4th quarters), the days count down from 7 to 1.
