Kate G. Anderson finds it relatively easy to get a migration permit, on the Knootian equivalent of a 'green card', to work as a skilled labourer.

She is put to work in one of the cities with the largest shortage of qualified police officers, Rotterdam. She does have to learn to speak Dutch, and take employer-funded courses about the Knootian legal system. While she does this, she is put to work patrolling the streets with an experienced native police officer. Her colleagues are very friendly and helpful, but the police is not very well-funded and sometimes the bureaucracy involved with policing can be overwhelming. Her skill with computers allows her to minimise the time she has to spend behind a desk.

Whilst patrolling, Kate experiences the lack of respect for police-officers in poorer neighbourhoods first-hand. Often she is flipped off by passers-by, and sometimes even called names. Her older Knootian partner only acts on these incidents when he finds it impossible to ignore them, usually saying that 'he was young too, once'. Crime, on the other hand, is much lower than you'd expect for an urban agglomeration the size of Rotterdam. Drug-related crimes are non-existent, and she finds that she spends most of her time investigating cases of petty burglary, domestic violence and public drunkenness. Social skills are emphasised, and Kate is reminded time and again to be the ' people's friend'.

Her job pays well, and Kate can afford to live in a nice inner-city apartment. Eventually, she does meet the man of her dreams, who gives up his career at a recycling plant to become a "stay at home dad" and look after the children. As she is able to continue her career and studies in this way, Kate can eventually retire as a police chief inspector.

After landing at Schiphol airport, near Amsterdam, Calanon Onovomir thinks that he may have made a mistake booking that 'last minute' flight to Knootoss. Acid rain pours down from grey clouds that stretch unbroken across the horizon. There is very little greenery in and around the airport, which can be described as modern but drab, despite the high service level. He gets past customs relatively quickly, and is then picked up by a female human guide from the travel agency.

While friendly and multi-lingual, the tour guide has an annoying habit of trying to keep her group together by clapping her hands and yelling loudly for people to move along. If she had a cattleprod, she would probably be using it, he thinks. During the first two days of Calanons trip, he is guided past various tourist traps of varying degrees of interest: a carefully preserved park of ancient windmills that is described as 'quintessentially Knootian' but which looks nothing like the rest of the country whatsoever, vast tulip fields, some ancient castles, and museums with (admittedly) impressive 17th century art.

Eventually, the elf loses interest and goes out to explore Knootoss on his own. During his ventures of the inner cities of various larger places, he finds that drugs are freely available in coffeeshops, as are prostitutes.
Calanon Onovomir finds the Knootian humans to be insufferably naive and careless. The people in this country seem to have little respect for honour, tradition or social status. Especially the service staff appear apathetic, treating him only as well as they treat everyone else. While dining in a somewhat classy cafe-restaurant, he runs into some elves who live there, and spends the night with them trying to get some answers to the question how elves could possibly chose to live here.

Kayko Corde would catch many eyes when she arrives in Knootoss so lightly dressed. Already on the airport, she is propositioned by a white gentleman who mistake her for a prostitute. When Kayko is insulted by this, he smiles apologetically and moves along. No malice was intended.

As the package she carries with her is marked as 'important', Kayko foregoes the public transport and hails a taxi cab from the airport. This turns out to be something of a mistake: the train might have taken her to the centre of Amsterdam in thirty minutes, but the gruff-looking cabby drives around for at least two hours before they arrive at the destination address, charging an exorbitant fee. She charges it on the company account, but cannot help feeling a little dirty from all the stares she got through the rear view mirror.

The destination for the package is a company office, located in a historic brick building by a canal. The woman at the reception takes it, and signs off on her expenses, but doesn't offer her coffee. After a quick but stand-offish "thank you" she is free to go and pick up her next delivery.

Biography
Bio: An exceptional student, but socially awkward, Wallace threw himself into his studies. As a teenager, he identified very strongly with the policies of the Imperium; coupled with his fascination with all things mechanical, he decided that he should design weapons for a living. Through perseverance and great effort, he managed to land a position with the Ministry of Armaments Research and Development, and was even able to enter the prestigious Land-Based Superweapons Division, where he helped design the suspension of the massively powerful yet laughably impractical 2500 ton supertank, Imperialist. Wallace considers his role in the development of one of New Ziedrich's most notable propaganda weapons the greatest achievement of his entire life, and uses it to attract women on online dating sites.

Wallace is currently a virgin.

[Knootoss]

Upon arriving in Knootoss, Lumina finds the air to be pleasantly polluted and therefore easy to breathe. The asthmatic kid who sat next to her on the plane is already using his breathing device, and seems distinctly less comfortable. The customs officials are fussy about weapons and technology that can be made to produce weapons, and she would have to give those up at the border.

Lumina is a little luckier than Kayko Corde, taking a train to the heart of Amsterdam. On her salary, she can afford a three star hotel, which ends up being quite nice: a spacious room with a view of the canals, good food and WiFi internet access. Her shyness does not come into play much, as the staff leave her well alone, unless she actually asks for something.

While exploring Amsterdam, Lumina runs into a young lad her age called Willem, who offers to show her the city. She is treated to an elaborate tour of the old houses, the canals, the museums and the other sights and sounds. Willem also offers to show her the Red Light District, apparently thinking it is just another tourist attraction. He also introduces her to his friends, who all speak English as well as Dutch. Together, they engage in various nerdy activities for the evening. The young Knootians seem very curious about Lumina and the Helghast Empire, asking her many questions as they watch movies and play on game consoles.

Willem continues to hang around Lumina, interested in "casually mingling", though at one point she catches him making out with another girl. He is extremely apologetic, and claims it was all a misunderstanding.

Thinking that she has seen quite enough of Knootoss, Lumina looks online for the next flight to another holiday destination.

Wallace arrives in a nation at war, and this means that the Knootoss News Network and it's subsidiaries spend an inordinate amount of time reporting on the latest Knootian small-arms and weaponry. The television in his hotel room would provide plenty of entertainment for the weapons' expert, though coverage is a little shallow. For such a happy-go-lucky liberal nation, Knootoss turns out to be producing a staggering amount of 'shiny' technical ways of killing people.

The Den Helder naval base ends up being an interesting place to visit, even though much of the navy is at sea, and "sensitive" areas have been cordoned off. A non-refitted Zeedier-class submarine can be visited by tourists, giving him a good idea of the militaries' low-budget past. The tour guide mentions that similar submarines are also being deployed in the conflict with Iesus Christi.

Using his position with the Ministry of Armaments Research and Development, Wallace has also arranged a meeting with some representatives of Knootian arms manufacturers. (A meeting that'd allow him to write off the trip as official, and therefore tax-deductible.) The Knootian salespersons are friendly, speak his language, and are generally knowledgeable in his field. They make several proposals for joint arms projects, and inundate him with business cards. When he gets back to New Ziedrich, he can expect multiple follow-up calls soliciting business deals.

On the way back to his hotel room, Wallace is aggressively solicited by a forty year old prostitute. That night, Wallace loses his virginity in his hotel room. The sex is okay, and she is rather understanding of his shyness. However, the next morning, he finds that his wallet and cell phone are gone. The prostitute was nice enough to leave his passport, documentation, and plane ticket on her side of the bed. Using these, he can get back to his home nation without any major embarrassment.

After a brief stay in Knootoss, Adam Goldstein boards a plane that is bound for the Israeli region. Specifically, to the Knootian protectorate of Ale-Yarok. Upon arrival he finds many of the sights and sounds to be pleasantly familiar: Ale-Yarok City has the flair of Tel-Aviv and the amenities of any western capital. The sandy beaches are filled with scantily clad tourists, and the town itself is a multicultural hub, where Israeli, Arabic and other nationalities mingle freely. Orthodox Jews can be seen here and there, and he finds one on the street corner preaching against the "immorality and sin" of the place.

Starting a business as a lawyer is easy, especially with a bit of starting capital, though Adam would have to spend significant time reviewing the legal system of Ale-Yarok first. This particular system is actually a chaotic muddle of archaic colonial power structures, radical democracy at the lower levels, and personal freedoms enshrined in the law. Adam gets involved with a group of civil rights' activists who want to secure "true" democracy for the protectorate, through legal processes. This turns out to be a real challenge.

After about a month in Ale-Yarok, Adam walks into a large demonstration by Orthodox Jews by accident. Rocks are hurled at the military, and they retalliate by using some kind of anastethic gas on the entire demonstration. "Citizen Eisenstein" wakes up in prison, but finds himself to be released almost immediately when his true identity is revealed. A subsequent lawsuit against the government wins him 3000 euros in damages, and some local notoriety.

Adam manages to gather some enthusiastic countrymen to form the government-in-exile, but the Etorianan authorities are largely able to discredit it as anti-zionist because of it's basis in the protectorate.

Speaking Dutch makes Knootoss an easy country to visit for Selina Melusine. Without 'real job prospects' (according to the customs' agency), she nevertheless manages to slip into the country on a tourist visa.

Selina ends up hanging with the Amsterdam anarchist 'scene' for a few months, living in a stately house that has been squatted right in the city centre. The facilities of the squat are quite minimal, but the company of like-minded people makes up for it. She makes a little money from selling her art in an alternative gallery, but for the most part has to rely on the solidarity of her commune.

When an anti-capitalist demonstration in front of the Pink Bunny Cola headquarters turns violent, Selina is arrested by the police and taken into custody. The prison has better facilities than the squat but it is, in the end, still a jail. In prison, the authorities learn that her tourist visa has expired months ago. The Knootian authorities contact Threlizdun about taking their citizen back. In anticipation of the paperwork being worked out, Selina is released from prison into the custody of a local consulate official.

Aman Para-anakh is greeted at the airport by his Knootian business partner, with whom he had corresponded prior to arriving. A limousine with chauffeur drives them to a city villa that is located just outside the main urban area. The air is more pleasant here, far away from the anti-like business of the city centres. The villa doubles as the office and headquarters of Aman's new business, a firm that specialises in marketing succesful foreign products on the Knootian market.

Aman's attitudes, intelligence and good looks mesh very well with Knootian society, contributing to his business success. The introduction of a boiled snails to the menu of a few classy restaurants is a huge success, providing the firm with more orders, and allowing him to hire more staff. He engages in a sexual relationship with his attractive, blonde secretary.

Before long, he attracts the attention of the Order of the Invisible Hand. A friendly business partner offers to introduce him to the local chapter, and Aman reluctantly agrees. While attending, he finds that many powerful businessmen are a member of the Order. After some quasi-religious rituals which he mostly regards as 'hokey', there are meetings where he does a few very profitable business deals. For now, he decides to stay with the cult, if only to further his business interests.

Bio: Gordon was abused as a child and, after graduating from high school, decided to become a pilot. When his plane nearly crashed, he discovered that he had an unusual knack for performing emergency maneuvers. He went overseas to train as a fighter pilot (Anolil has no military) and cam back. He worked for a decade as a mercenary fighter pilot, but then quit after feeling guilty about killing so many people for money. He tried to redeem himself by becoming a foreign volunteer to defend a country that had been invaded by a brutal enemy, and became one of the highest scoring pilots in the war. He currently works as a freelance pilot.

Gordon Raines Albertson finds that there is plenty of work for him as a freelance pilot in Schiphol airport. A cramped, cluttered apartment located in the path of one of the airports' runways becomes his 'base of operations' for many short-to-mid-length flights of cargo in the Western Atlantic region. It is a dynamic, unpredictable life: his employer is a fairly small company, that specialises in finding trafficking niches. Gordon never knows where he'll be next week, let alone next year.

One of the downsides of his job is that his plane is nearly always swept thoroughly for drugs, especially by the Pantocratorian authorities, who seem to suspect him to be a drug trafficker. A few humiliating strip searches make him less eager to carry cargo for a Knootian freighter, but the pay convinces him to keep his job, at least for now.

Gordon eventually marries at age forty, but his travels make it difficult to maintain the relationship. Eventually, at age fifty, he has to go through a painful divorce.

Jill is hired by a Knootian utilities giant on a six month contract, in order to assist with the construction of a windmill park in the North Sea. It is an ambitious project, but not unprecedented in Knootoss. Always on the move, Jill ends up dividing her time between working at the windmill design office in Utrecht, overseeing construction at the assembly plant in Bigtopia and scouting the ocean site for problems.

Her Knootian colleagues are friendly, though she finds that they do not share her idealistic mentality. Wind power is only a small branch of the utilities company, and she gets the distinct impression that it only exists to hoover up subsidies from the national government. This, by and large, the project manages to do.

When ill flies back to her homeland after six months, she picks a window seat on the starboard side of the plane, looking down on a field of white dots, standing defiantly in the ocean, generating power for the vast urban hinterland behind them. She can be proud of what she has accomplished.

Rasambi Olani arrives in Knootoss on a short-term work visa, having obtained work as a professional veterinarian. Her salary advance allows her to rent a swanky apartment in the middle of a small town, which she can decorate to her hearts' desire. As luck has it, she runs into a nice woman too, and she ends up being her companion for the duration of her stay in Knootoss.

Unfortunately, the job is less satisfying. The animals that Rasambi works with are, in her opinion, being poorly treated: although things like living space and nutrient intake are carefully regulated, Knootians do not seem to really care for their animals. Cattle, including exotic cattle, is bred in large-scale and very dense facilities, which are prone to the spreading of disease. Her ability to improve the lives of animals taken into her care is limited.

After a few months, the itch to travel becomes stronger, and Rasambi moves on to greener pastures.

Bio: Kyle was born on Tipidemica's Home-Planet Gallkio shortly after the Fall of Old Tipidemica and at the age of 15 he joined his village's local defender squad that helped defend his Village in some times of chaos. During this time he also went to school and started studying Space-flight. At the age of 18 he deiced to go to the Thesiz Orbital Institute of Trade in order to prepare him in quest to fly ships and trade with Far off Planets. At 24 he bought his own spaceship, a 300 ft Portal Ship with Duel Plasma engines and a 75ft Cubed cargo bay.
